Race Recap: 2014 Singapore Grand Prix is back-to-front
Mon, 22 Sep 2014To paraphrase Guy Fawkes, 'Remember, remember the twenty-first of September.' That's the day the 2014 Formula One Championship took another big turn - and at one of the year's least interesting races, traditionally - putting Lewis Hamilton back at the top of the standings. Not only that, it did so by borrowing the template from the British Grand Prix this year: put Hamilton in front, retire Nico Rosberg.
It was close until then, though, Hamilton lining up on pole for Mercedes AMG Petronas just seven thousandths of a second ahead of Rosberg. Daniel Ricciardo, the year's greatest opportunist, took third ahead of his teammate Sebastian Vettel in the Infiniti Red Bull Racing, followed by Fernando Alonso in fifth for Ferrari. The Williams' looked like they'd be in trouble on Friday, but as usual they dredged up some pace on Saturday, Felipe Massa taking sixth ahead of Kimi Räikkönen in the second Ferrari, the second Williams of Valtteri Bottas in eighth. Kevin Magnussen saved a little bit of face for McLaren in ninth, and Daniil Kvyat did another solid job to line up tenth in his Toro Rosso.
Before it even started, the race wouldn't look the same.
Ferrari 212 Barchetta highlights RM auction at Villa d'Este
Tue, May 26 2015While show-goers sip champagne and basque in the glow of some of the most beautiful classics and most notable concept cars at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, at the Villa Erba just down the shore, collectors bid on some of the most tempting automotive creations. And this year was no exception. Highlighting RM Sotheby's auction this year was a rare classic 1952 Ferrari 212 Export Barchetta. The Touring-bodied competition roadster from Ferrari's early days fetched an incredible ˆ6,720,000 – nearly $7.4 million at current exchange rates – to set a new record for that model. According to Sports Car Market, the previous record was held by a 212 Export coupe that sold for $3.2 million early last year. A Barchetta failed to sell for a high bid of $1.97 million in 2008, which just goes to show how far this auction raised the bar for the 212. Though it was by far the top lot of the day, it wasn't the only million-dollar sale of the day. Heck, it wasn't even the only million-dollar Ferrari sold. A quartet of Ferrari supercars – including a 288 GTO, F40, F50 and Enzo – each fetched seven figures, as did a 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso and a 250 GT Cabriolet. So did a Lamborghini Miura, a '73 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 and a '53 Fiat 8V Cabriolet, if you can believe it. Other notable lots included a 1949 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Villa d'Este Coupe, a '74 Lancia Stratos and a rare stick-shift Ferrari 599 HGTE. All told, RM Sotheby's racked up nearly $30 million in sales at its first European auction since merging and rebranding, selling 34 out of the 39 lots consigned, but that stunning 250 California Spider did not appear to be among them.
Ferrari building 350 unique special editions for its 70th anniversary
Fri, Jul 1 2016Ferrari has been in business since 1947, which makes 2017 the automaker's 70th birthday. To celebrate its old age, the company has reportedly decided to create 350 bespoke special editions, each different from the next. According to Autocar, the company made the announcement to 100 owners and collectors in Venice, Italy, last weekend during the Ferrari Cavalcade. The 350 unique models will come from Ferrari's current lineup, and will include 70 each of the California T, 488 GTB, 488 Spider, GTC4 Lusso, and F12 Berlinetta. The Italian automaker chose 70 of the most iconic vehicles from its past to inspire the upcoming special editions, with each of the 350 examples being unique. To get this level of exclusivity, the Tailor-Made division, which handles the company's extra-custom orders, will lend a helping hand in design. The hardest thing for Ferrari, however, won't be putting 350 unique models on the road, but deciding how to pick which owners and collectors get the opportunity to purchase them. According to Ferrari boss Sergio Marchionne, that is "the most difficult part of what I do." Yep, sounds like a tough job, turning away millionaires. Autocar reports that Ferrari will reveal the 350 special-edition models at the Paris Motor Show in October, but that sounds like a difficult task. We're guessing they won't all be present, but that would sure be a sight to see. Related Video:
