Xcar celebrates Ferrari F12 Berlinetta as the end of an era

Few automakers are still making V12s. And even fewer of them are still naturally aspirated. The Bentley Continental, Rolls-Royce Wraith, BMW 760i, Mercedes S600, Pagani Huayra... they're all twin-turbocharged. That makes the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta something of a dying breed, and a masterpiece to be celebrated – as Xcar has in this latest video. With a 6.3-liter V12 up front under that long bonnet, driving 730 horsepower to the rear wheels, the F12 is old school – and perhaps the best of that old school before downsized turbocharged engines and hybrids finally take over for good. That'd consign atmospheric twelves like the Berlinetta, the Lamborghini Aventador and all those Aston Martins to the dustbin of history as the last of their kind. There are plenty of workshops filled with skilled craftsman who'd be glad to restore a classic Ferrari. But many are opting to sending their vintage Prancing Horses back to the factory in Maranello to be worked over by the company's own Classiche department. As a result, some buyers who've already placed their orders are reportedly being "advised" to add on extra options or risk losing their place on the waiting list to someone who will. The news comes from UK-based Magnitude Finance, whose director Tim Marlow said, "One client ordered the car many months ago but he was subsequently advised to increase the options he selected to guarantee delivery simply because others are prepared to go pay over the odds to get one new." Active headlights add over $2,500 to the price, fitted luggage nearly $11k, leather interior and front lift system a solid $6k each and those NART stripes another $11k. Ordering items like the engine cover ($7.8k), rear diffuser ($9.6k) and outer sill cover ($10k) in carbon fiber can add to the $288k base price as quick as the Speciale can gather pace.
