Ferrari, Maseratis trashed in Chinese off-road adventure

Ready to cringe? A group of Chinese motorists drove the Sichuan-Tibet Highway in a fleet of Italian cars, fording streams and hopping rocky terrain as they went. Well, they attempted to drive it, anyway. Only five of the cars managed to survive the truly unnecessary ordeal. The trip was reportedly the idea of a wealthy Chinese businessman named Ni Haishan. Haishan was driving the red Ferrari F12, with his employees following in what appear to be 10 Maserati Ghibli sedans. The Maseratis were gifts to his employees, which makes the loss of six of them along the way only slightly easier to stomach. Even the cars that made it to the finish line in Lhasa, Tibet, arrived with some serious damage. The unsurprising fallout included several wheels and tires on the Ferrari, including one wheel that took the studs it was attached to with it. As you can see above, the "highway" route was not exactly suited to these particular cars. There is some precedent for a car from Maranello driving to Lhasa, however. In 2005, Ferrari sent two 612 Scagliettis on a tour of China called "Ferrari 15,000 Red Miles" with various journalists at the wheel. That journey started and ended in Shanghai and took the cars all over the vast country, including two crossings of the Gobi Desert, along the Great Wall, and on some of Marco Polo's route. Of course, it also involved a lot of planning, a huge support team, and at least a modicum of common sense. All of this was supposedly Haishan's way of showing the world that business is good for him and that customers should trust their money with him. We might conclude otherwise based on the results. If you absolutely have to run this road in something Italian and expensive, may we suggest a Maserati Levante next time? F1 2013 Classic Edition to make Lauda's 1976 Ferrari playable

We'll cop to the fact that we might be a bit overly excited about the upcoming F1 2013 video game, specifically the Classic Edition. Codemasters has released umpteen trailers for the title already, mostly pretty cool ones, with cars lapping classic Formula One tracks that are set to be included in the fun.
With that said, this very latest historic addition to F1 2013 is pretty worthwhile, we think. Doing a kind of double promotion with Ron Howard's upcoming film Rush (which you all know by know to be the story of Niki Lauda, James Hunt and the chase for the 1976 F1 Championship), Codemasters is making the 1976 Ferrari 312 T2 a playable car in its new game. That's right, you can now walk in Lauda's racing boots, without all the painful crashing and superhuman recovery bother. Watch the video trailer below.

Modena opens new Enzo Ferrari museum

Enzo Ferrari was one of the 20th century's racing icons, and on the 116th birthday of its founder, Ferrari opened a lavish new wing of the Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena, Italy. The new hall is shaped like the hood of a '50s Ferrari racer on the outside and contains a century's worth of the brand's history inside. Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo and Enzo's son, Piero Ferrari, dedicated the new building on February 18.
The Enzo Ferrari Museum existed previously as two buildings, including Enzo's childhood home and his father's workshop, but the new building was created to display the Prancing Horse's full history. Projectors display images and films of Enzo's like across its walls and floors, and the cars on display represent Ferrari's most important as a driver and constructor over the past century.
The new gallery is meant to compliment the Museo Ferrari in nearby Maranello. Enzo's museum focuses squarely on Ferrari's past, and the other concentrates on brand's present and future, while still displaying some important classic models. Both will be open every day, expect for Christmas and the New Year.
