1999 Ferrari 360 Modena Coupe
VIN ZFFYR51A6X0117462
Fly Yellow with Black Leather Interior

Part of a long line of compact mid-engined Ferraris dating back to the legendary 206 and 246 Dino, the F360 Modena bristled with innovative technology upon its introduction. The biggest news was undoubtedly the decision to switch to an aluminum chassis, which increased rigidity by 40% while simultaneously decreasing weight by 28% over the outgoing 355. The engine in the 360 was slightly larger and more powerful, displacing 3.6 liter and producing 400hp, providing a 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 189mph. In short, the car is everything that modern Ferrari should be: fast, exotic, visually arresting, and an outstanding driver’s car. Most cars were equipped with the F1 paddle shift gearbox with electronically actuated clutch, though a few examples were fitted with conventional gated shifter 6-speed manual transmissions.

This particular example has been well maintained and is nicely equipped with 6-speed transmission, challenge grille and fender shields. In recent years, it has belonged to two California owners who have maintained the car at the same shop, Stewart’s Automotive in Sacramento, California. The car has a new battery and also received new rear rotors and pads 500 miles ago. Additionally, the exhaust manifolds and ABS module were also replaced, which are common failure points on these cars. The invoices show regular preventative maintenance and the occasional other fix (new wiper switch, alternator cable etc.), as well as a new clutch at 31,000 miles and a belt service at 35,000 miles in May of 2008. Consequently, the car is due for a belt service at this time. Miscellaneous service records go back as far as 9000 miles showing that the car has been properly cared for.

Cosmetically, the car makes a strong impression and is certainly impactful as only a yellow Ferrari can be. The paintwork is generally good, with a few scuffs and scrapes to the front bumper and one significant blemish in the front bumper that has damage to the paint but has not punctured the bumper cover and could be remedied without replacing the bumper. The paintwork is otherwise attractive and presentable and the car has clear bra to protect various areas of the paintwork as well as the headlamps. The lights and glass are excellent and the wheels are excellent overall with small areas of curb rash on each right wheel and none on the left wheels.

The interior is generally in excellent shape other than the typical stickiness to some of the plastic trims on the interior, which is common on Ferraris of this era. The leather is excellent across the board, which minimal wear to the driver’s seat bolster. The dashboard is very good, with minor shirinkage around the defroster vents only. The carpets are excellent and the contrasting yellow stitching looks very smart.

The engine compartment and trunk are both unmodified and clean, as befits a well-cared for and properly maintained car. The trunk is surprisingly capacious. The car is fitted with Quicksilver exhaust, which is well made and impressive-sounding. The car is complete with spare tire kit, tools, and books.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a well-maintained and complete example of a usable high performance modern Ferrari. It has a clean Carfax and although it is due for a belt service by time, it has been properly maintained and comes with a thick file of service records, as well as books and tools. It has few modifications and has escaped the invasive changes from which these cars sometimes suffer. Furthermore, it is a 6-speed example, which is a more effective solution than the early F1 gearboxes used in Ferraris of this period.

Bertone's shark-nose Ferrari 250 set to break records

Thu, Jul 23 2015

If Nuccio Bertone had one regret, it's that he didn't get to work more with Ferrari. "They have always been with Pininfarina," Bertone was quoted as saying toward the end of his career. "I would have liked to have done more for Ferrari." There were a few exceptions, like the atypical Dino GT4, the angular Rainbow concept of 1976, and the unique 250 GT you see here. Only this one wasn't just designed and crafted by Bertone – it was designed and crafted for Bertone. And now it's going up for auction. Inspired by the 156 Grand Prix racer, this one-of-a-kind 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta was commissioned by Bertone to showcase its capabilities at the Geneva and Turin motor shows that year, and to serve as Nuccio's personal wheels. The design was carried out by none other than Giorgetto Giugiaro, in close collaboration with Bertone, and is characterized by the shark nose that would look right at home on a week-long Discovery Channel special... if it were directed by Roberto Rossellini. It's painted in Blu Notte Metallizzato (Italian for "midnight blue metallic") with a rich burgundy leather interior. The only one of its kind, chassis 3269 GT has been part of the Lorenzo Zambrano collection for over three decades now. It's slated to cross the auction block for the first time next month at Pebble Beach. That's where Gooding & Company expects it will fetch around $15 million, which would (according to the archives at Sports Car Market) make it one of the most expensive Ferraris, and by some margin the highest-priced 250 GT SWB Berlinetta, ever sold at auction. 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Speciale (Estimate $14,000,000-$16,000,000) Any coachbuilt Ferrari will stir excitement on the auction block, but 3269 GT is quite possibly the most important 250 GT SWB ever to be presented at public auction. Built for and personally owned by Nuccio Bertone to showcase his company at the Geneva and Torino Auto Shows in 1962, this one-off "sharknose" Berlinetta Speciale Ferrari is sure to electrify the Pebble Beach Auctions when Gooding & Company presents this Italian masterpiece in August. This unique Ferrari was one of the first cars penned by the well-known stylist, Giorgetto Giugiaro, while working for Nuccio Bertone. The two worked together to create one of the most viscerally moving designs in Ferrari's history, which was inspired by the world championship-winning Grand Prix car - the Ferrari 156 F1.

Race Recap: 2014 Spanish Grand Prix is boom and bust [spoilers]

Mon, 12 May 2014

The Spanish Grand Prix's 2.892-mile Circuit de Catalunya is considered a preview for the rest of the season, since it's a combination of long front straight and twisting middle sectors mimic sections from every other Formula One track to follow. After the long break following the flyaway races to open the season, teams and fans have also been looking forward to this race to see if anyone had a realistic hope of catching Mercedes AMG Petronas; Infiniti Red Bull Racing honcho Christian Horner boiled his team's outlook for the season down to the line, "We've got to [beat them in Spain] if we're going to make a championship of it."
If we take that as our starting point then the weekend began as a bust. Lewis Hamilton only just beat Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg for pole, the Brit's final effort getting him 0.178 seconds clear of the German. Daniel Ricciardo, proving Red Bull is at least the best of the rest, took third but did so more than a second behind Hamilton. Valtteri Bottas of Williams lined up fourth, almost 1.5 second behind and Romain Grosjean delivered overdue good news for Lotus by taking fifth on the grid, more than 1.7 seconds behind pole. Kimi Räikkönen in sixth outqualified his Ferrari teammate Fernando Alonso in seventh, but he couldn't be happy about it because the Ferraris were nearly two seconds behind, and Jenson Button in eighth in the McLaren was more than two second behind. Felipe Massa put the second Williams in ninth, and Sebastian Vettel overcame a terrible start to the weekend to make it into Q3, then didn't set a time when his gearbox failed, then got dropped five places to 15th on the grid when the gearbox had to be changed.
When the lights went out, then came the boom...

F1 teams to test titanium skid plates to reignite spark in series

Sun, 22 Jun 2014

The 2014 Formula One season opened with one overwhelming complaint - the cars didn't sound right. It sapped the excitement, despite the fact that this season has seen a number of truly thrilling races (Bahrain, Spain and Montreal all come to mind). Attempts have been made to restore some of the audible thrill of the cars, although efforts have remained unsuccessful.
If F1 can't fix the sound of the cars, then other methods need to be considered to restore its self-perceived lack of excitement. One of those involves fitting titanium skid plates to the cars in a bid to reintroduce the sparks that were so prevalent in the sport's past.
Mercedes-AMG and Ferrari conducted initial experiments with the new skid plates during early practice sessions for the 2014 Austrian Grand Prix. Kimi Raikkonen and Nico Rosberg had the plates fitted to different locations of their cars, in a bid to see which created the most dramatic sparks. Considering the photos the tests, though, neither Mercedes' nor Ferrari's setup really seemed successful, which is why you're seeing Johnny Herbert and his 1989 Benneton B188 up top.
