You could hardly ask for more from a truck than you get with this 2001 Dodge Ram, 2500, V10, Automatic 4WD!  If you need something pulled, this truck does it and hardly knows anything is back there!

This truck can pull regular trailers, a fifth wheel, or an in bed camper!  It’s set up to do any of these.  Inside the flawless spray lined bed are fifth wheel rails and included with this truck is a Reese 16K sliding fifth wheel.  We used this to pull a 33 foot fifth wheel and maneuvered with the slider in the rear position.  Then just slide the fifth wheel forward and you’re ready for the road.  We even towed with the fifth wheel all the way back on the highway and there is no noticeable difference!  This truck is that heavy and that capable.

The original owner set this truck up for an in bed camper, so the rails that go underneath the bed are already in place.  There is also an electrical outlet in the bed to supply power to the in bed camper, along with the same kind of outlet at the rear of the truck to power your fifth wheel.

If you want to rough it, the camper shell that comes with the truck also has lights in the ceiling than run off the truck battery.  The bed is clean and lined, so all you need to do is throw down some sleeping bags and take a nap!

The truck has a Class VI hitch installed, in case you have a pull trailer that you use instead.  Once again you can plug your camper into the outlet integrated into the hitch and power your electrical needs.

Don’t worry about too much load on this truck!  It has helper springs in the back, along with air bags for the rear suspension.  There just isn’t a way to overload this truck!

The four wheel drive will make sure you don’t get stuck.  The four almost new all-weather tires have never let us down.  You slip it into 4 HI or 4 LO and you GO!

Here’s a write up on the V10.  http://www.allpar.com/mopar/V10.html   The hp rating of this engine is around 310 and the torque is around 450.  Once on the road, with a fully loaded 33 foot fifth wheel trailer, I watched the engine hum along the Interstate at under 2K rpm like there was nothing to it.  The overdrive transmission helps keep the rpm low once you’re on your way.  If you’re thinking of full time RVing or just want the best and most reliable rig to tow with, then this is it!  Compare these numbers with any diesel, and then compare the price of fuel.  This V10 runs on regular gas and likes it!

What about mileage you ask?  If you’re serious about pulling a camper, you’re going to use some gas with any rig you buy.  The secret of keeping a V10 economical is to not mash the gas like it was a V8.  This torque producing monster 8 liter comes on strong at low RPM and keeps on pulling.  I learned to keep the RPMs at 2K or less when pulling and we did as well as a large V8 pulling a load – a range of 11-16 depending on the road.  Level interstate is your friend when RVing!   The road to our home is about a 30 degree grade and we pulled the fully loaded fiver up it with no problem.

So what about creature comforts in the cab?  Leather, heated seats for both passenger and driver keep you happy for long hours on the road.  The SLT interior package leaves very little to add.  Just a CD and a navigation package perhaps, but we were satisfied with a plug in Garmin and the factory AM/FM/cassette, and we added a plug in MP3 player (all included).  All the music you could ever want!  The drivers’ seat also electronically adjusts up and down, so shorter drivers can get good position to fly this rig down the interstate!  The steering wheel tilts which I like on long drives.  If you run into some fog, just turn on the factory fog lamps integrated into the chrome bumper.  And don’t worry if you have to hit the brakes!  The brake controller mounted on the lower part of the dash runs through factory wiring to activate the trailer brakes!

This is the four door version where both doors open from the center, so you can have lots of room for rear seat passengers to climb in and get comfortable without fighting a center post.  Underneath the rear seat cushion is a long storage space which is where we store the towing mirrors (included) and other things you like to have handy.

At a little over 97K miles, this V10 is just getting broken in!  That’s less than 8K per year, which is just enough to keep it healthy, without running up the mileage!  It has been a powerful, trouble free truck, but we have decided to not travel like we used to for health reasons.  We sold our fifth wheel, but we do have a 33-34 foot fifth wheel cover that will also go with this truck.  In the winter I used to drive this truck to work if the snow was deep and I never once got stuck.

There is nothing else you need to hit the road.  You can pull whatever camper you have to any spot you want, then unhitch and explore in this powerful and dependable 4WD monster!

Blue book on this truck ranges from $17,035 to $19,735, depending on whether or not you buy it from a dealer or a private party like us.

Killing the Dart and 200 might lower FCA's fuel economy burden

Tue, Feb 9 2016

Killing the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200 could allow FCA US to take advantage of an intriguing quirk in the next decade's fuel economy regulations. By increasing its ratio of trucks versus cars, the automaker might not need to worry so much about hitting the more stringent efficiency rules. At first thought, it might seem harder for an automaker with a ton of trucks to meet the government's mandated 54.5 mile per gallon corporate average fuel economy for 2025. However, every company doesn't need to hit that lofty figure, according to The Detroit Free Press. The exact target varies by the product mix between trucks and cars. "While passenger car and light truck categories have separate CAFE targets, it's still true that more trucks versus cars in a company lineup means a lower combined CAFE target," Brandon Schoettle, Project Manager Sustainable Worldwide Transportation at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, told Autoblog. "While passenger car and light truck categories have separate CAFE targets, it's still true that more trucks versus cars in a company lineup means a lower combined CAFE target." FCA US' current product blend has 80 percent pickups and CUVs, which means the company stands to benefit from a lower fuel economy target. It might not seem entirely fair environmentally, but this is a great move from a business perspective. The new CAFE rules aren't set in stone, according to The Detroit Free Press, but potentially taking advantage of the regulation is just one more reason to cut the Dart and 200. Modern crossovers also aren't gas guzzlers like older SUVs, which could make it easier to hit the fuel economy target. "Utilities offer practicality and versatility that cars do not, and now, built on car architectures, they do not penalize consumers on fuel economy as they once did," AutoTrader Senior Analyst Michelle Krebs told Autoblog. Schoettle warns that FCA is still making a gamble by killing the small sedans. "Depending on the previous sales volumes and how much these vehicles might have exceeded their specific CAFE targets, it's possible that these cars helped earn CAFE credits for FCA that they could bank for future use," he said. "Future sales breakdowns [car vs.

eGarage interviews a couple with 65 Vipers

Thu, 12 Sep 2013

Owning multiple vehicles can be a hassle worth enjoying if you're willing to spend the time and the money required to acquire and maintain them. But when it's hard to make ends meet while underused valuable hunks of metal, plastic and rubber sit happily taking up garage space, journeys into the depths of other people's well-developed automotive obsessions will either bring you and your cars closer together, or compel you to sell them off before you become one of those fanatics. A recent video by eGarage is one of those journeys, and it's not for the faint of heart: D'Ann and Wayne Rauh own 65 Dodge and SRT Vipers in a collection of automobiles that exceeds 100.
We're not sure if the couple has developed heat-resistant calves from stepping over Viper door sills made burning-hot by side-exhaust pipes, but we wouldn't be surprised if they did. We did learn that their obsession with the no-holds-barred sports car started in 2006 with a trip to a dealership to buy just one Viper, which goes to show how innocently car obsessions can start. But the Rauhs seem to be doing just fine - perhaps better - 64 more Vipers later.
Watch the video below for the full story and to see what eGarage claims is the world's largest Viper collection.

FCA issues recall for 300k Dodge Chargers over airbag sensor

Sun, Aug 2 2015

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has issued another recall, this time for the Dodge Charger. The issue stems from an overly sensitive control module that could deploy the side-curtain airbag and seatbelt pretensioner if the door is kicked or slammed too hard. The recall affects certain Charger sedans from the 2011-2014 model years, specifically those manufactured between May 6, 2010, and June 5, 2014. All told, that amounts to an estimated 322,078 units, including 284,153 in the United States, another 13,169 in Canada, 2,484 in Mexico, and 22,272 overseas. Owners of those vehicles will be asked to bring their vehicles in to their local dealers to have the Occupant Restraint Control module recalibrated, and are being advised in the meantime to "exercise caution when closing doors." If this issue sounds familiar, that's because the automaker issued a similar recall for Ram trucks just last week, affecting over 667,000 four-door pickups in the United States alone. Following a further investigation into its passenger cars, FCA found a similar problem with the Charger, whose door design mandated specific calibration of the module in question for that model. The company says it is aware of three minor injuries potentially related to the issue, but no accidents. This campaign is just the latest in a string of recall-related issues to have emerged from Auburn Hills recently. The Ram truck recall was issued in tandem with another airbag-related recall for a further million pickups. Prior to that it called in another 1.4 million vehicles to update their infotainment system software due to a security issue. Another 350,000 Dodge Journeys were called in before that to have their engine covers secured. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is expected to issue the company a massive hundred-million-dollar fine for failing to follow proper procedures related to safety and recall issues. Meanwhile, another NHTSA investigation that could have affected 4.7 million units was closed with no further action deemed necessary. And an appeal court judge in Georgia reduced the damages the company will be ordered to pay the family of a child who died in a fire in a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Statement: Occupant Restraint Control Module August 1, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is conducting a voluntary safety recall to recalibrate control modules on approximately 284,153 U.S.-market sedans to prevent inadvertent side-curtain air-bag and seatbelt pre-tensioner deployment.
