The Kennedy Half Dollar was introduced in 1964, prematurely putting an end to the prior Franklin Half series. The coin was created as a way to memorialize President John F. Kennedy who had been assassinated in the prior year. The series was immediately popular with the public, and remains popular with coin collectors today.
The obverse of the coin was designed by Gilroy Roberts based on existing models used for Kennedy's Presidential Medal. It features Kennedy facing left, with "Liberty" above, the date below, and "In God We Trust" split by the truncation of the neck. The reverse features the Presidential Seal, as designed by Frank Gasparro. A heraldic eagle is surrounded by fifty stars with "United States of America" above and "Half Dollar" below.
The Kennedy Half Dollar was minted for circulation each year from 1964 to 2001, except for the years 1970 and 1987 when coins were only produced for inclusion in the annual Mint Sets. From 2002 to present, circulation strike Kennedy Halves have been produced in limited quantities not issued for circulation, but made available to collectors through numismatic bags and rolls. The lowest mintage issues are the 2008-P and 2008-D circulation strike coins, with 1.7 million produced for each.
Kennedy Half Dollars underwent a number of compositional changes during the course of the series. The first coins issued in 1964 were struck in 90% silver, as were the quarter dollars and dimes struck for that year. In 1965 the silver content was completely removed from the quarter and dime, but reduced to 40% for the half dollar. This 40% silver composition was used for Kennedy Halves struck from 1965 to 1970. In subsequent years, there were Kennedy Half Dollars minted with silver content, but these were for special collector sets. The first instance was the 1976-S Uncirculated and Proof Kennedy Half Dollars struck in 40% silver for inclusion in 3 coin Bicentennial Coin Sets. Starting in 1992, the US Mint began issuing a Silver Proof Set. These sets contained the quarter, dime, and half dollar struck in 90% silver. When the Robert F. Kennedy Commemorative Silver Dollar was released in 1998, the US Mint produced a special 1998-S matte proof Kennedy Half Dollar struck in 90% silver for inclusion in a Kennedy Collector's Set.

Chrysler investigating complaints of vehicles with faulty power modules
Sun, 24 Aug 2014Chrysler owners are hopping mad after experiencing a series of electrical gremlins in some of the company's vehicles. Issues range from mere annoyances - windows rolling down and radios turning off of their own accord - to serious safety issues, with headlights that randomly shut off at night and cars that stall and refuse to start.
The issues are being blamed on the total integrated power module, which can cost up to $1,000 for customers to replace. This, of course, has led to a hefty batch of complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with 240 owners expressing their displeasure so far. Another site, CarComplaints.com, has registered over 300 complaints relating to the 2010 to 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango, alone, according to The New York Times.
Chrysler has acknowledged that it's investigating the complaints and is analyzing the faulty TIPMs, but that isn't quite enough for customers of the affected vehicles. The newspaper has snagged a few of the more harrowing tales with the electrically challenged Chrysler products, culled from the NHTSA complaints.
2014 Dodge Durango leaks ahead of NY rollout
Wed, 27 Mar 2013Even though Chrysler will reportedly discontinue the Dodge Durango after the current model's lifespan - said to be around 2016 - that isn't stopping the automaker from improving its full-size, three-row SUV. The vehicle won't debut at the New York Auto Show until tomorrow, but images are already leaking out ahead of the embargo lift, and they show that the 2014 model is getting even more aggressive styling to go with more technology inside and out.
Dodge limited its early press shots of the new Durango to just the R/T trim level, but this new look adds a meaner look to this model with more dramatic projector-beam headlights along with a "floating" crosshair grille and a restyled fascia. At the rear of the Durango, LED racetrack taillights show a family resemblance to the Charger and Dart, while a new rear fascia adds to the styling while also allowing for an integrated trailer hitch.
On the tech side, the instrument panel looks to have been redesigned to include a standard seven-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) gauge cluster, and it also appears as if Chrysler's well-liked UConnect system has been updated with the 8.4-inch touchscreen found in other Chrysler vehicles. The 2013 model's conventional console shifter has been replaced by a rotary knob for gear selection, suggesting that there are transmission changes afoot as well. We'll have more details when the silks slide off this big boy tomorrow, so stay tuned.
