This is a real sublime green with black interior 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 440 SIX PACK.  The car does not have the original motor or transmission, it now has a '72 440 block with the '67 440 heads, complete six pack set up and runs very well.  The 727 transmission shifts good and seems to have no problems.  The rear end is an 8.75 sure grip with 3.23 gears, does leak a little, but makes no noise.  The VIN number designates this to be a 440 SIX PACK and the cowl, dash vin, fender tag, title, and door vin all match.  As far as rust goes, there is a little in each lower quarter panel behind the wheels and in the front drivers side floor pan.  The other three floor pans have surface rust only and the trunk pan has surface rust and light scale rust but, it is very solid.  There is absolutely no rust around the windshield or back glass area, theses places are very solid.  Also, there is no rust on any of the frame.  Under the hood, there is an area around the drivers side hood hinge that needs attention, it appears to be a crack or tear on the inner fender.  Both rocker panels need replacing, they are pushed in quite a bit.  The car has typical small dents and door dings along with a larger dent on the upper half of the passenger door and some dents on the roof.  The car was wrecked back in the 70's and had the entire front subframe replaced along with the drivers fender, hood, grill, headlight bezels, and core support.  Since the core support was replaced from another Challenger, the vin number on it will not match the cars vin.  Also, the k-member was replaced with another that does not have a skid plate.  There are B-body front bucket seats in the car and it comes with 1970 Challenger front buckets as well.  The correct rallye gauges with 8000 tach are in the car but the tach does not work properly.  Speedometer works and is accurate along with all other gauges, except the clock.  A list of parts the car comes with are as follows....new carpet, package tray, front and rear seat covers, seat foam, 440 SIX PACK drivers side hood emblem, and body bumper kit.  There are some used parts as well, including passenger side hood emblem, grill r/t and trunk r/t emblems and Challenger fender emblems.  This is a Montana car and comes with a clean Arkansas title.  The fender tag reads as follows... E87 D32 JS23 VOB XXXXXX FJ5 H6X9 000 B12 XXX636 FJ5 A01 A04 A62 C16 C55 G33 M21 N41 N42 N85 R11 V6X Y05 EN2.  I have probably missed something about the car since my memory stinks, so call and ask questions.  Thanks and good luck.

Auto Mergers and Acquisitions: Suicide or salvation?

Tue, Sep 8 2015

We love the Moses figure. A savior riding in from stage right with the ideas, the smarts, and the scrappiness to put things right. Alan Mullaly. Carroll Shelby. Lee Iacocca. Andrew Carnegie. Steve Jobs. Elon Musk. Bart Simpson. Sergio Marchionne does not likely view himself with Moses-like optics, but the CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recently gave a remarkable, perhaps prophetic interview with Automotive News about his interest and the inevitability of merging with a potential automotive partner like General Motors. Marchionne has been overtly public about his notion that GM must merge with FCA. For a bit of context, GM sold 9.9 million vehicles in 2014, posting $2.8 billion in net income, while FCA sold 4.75 million units and earned $2.4 billion in net income, painting a very rosy FCA earnings-to-sales picture. But that's not the entire picture. Most people in the auto industry still remember the trainwreck that was the DaimlerChrysler "merger" written in what turned out to be sand in 1998. It proved to be a master class in how not to fuse two companies, two cultures, two continents, and two management teams. Oh, it worked for the two individuals at both helms pre-merger. They got silly rich. And the industry itself was in a misty romance at the time with mergers and acquisitions. BMW bought Rolls-Royce. Volkswagen Group bought Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini, putting all three brands into their rightful place in both products and positioning. No marriages there, so no false pretense. Finally, Nissan and Renault got married in 1999. A successful marriage requires several rare elements in this atmosphere of gas fumes and power lust. But a successful marriage requires several rare elements in this atmosphere of gas fumes and power lust, the principle part being honesty. Daimler and Chrysler lied to each other. The heads of each unit, the product planners, and finance all presented their then-current and long-range forecasts to each other with less-than-forthright accuracy. Daimler was the far greater equal and no one from the Chrysler side enjoyed that. The cultures were entirely different, too, and little was done to bridge that gap. Which brings me back to the present overtures by Marchionne to GM. "There are varying degrees of hugs," Marchionne stated in the Automotive News piece. "I can hug you nicely, I can hug you tightly, I can hug you like a bear, I can really hug you." Seriously?

Motorweek goes retro with '80s hot hatch shootout

Mon, 03 Nov 2014

Motorweek's decades of history on television make it the perfect medium to look back into the automotive past and see how things are different now. It recently added old road test videos to its YouTube channel of the Acura NSX and Toyota Supra, as well as the Ferrari F40. For one of its newest flashback clips, Motorweek has exhumed an affordable five-car challenge of 1986's premiere hot hatches.
By today's standards, this is an eclectic field that features fondly remembered classics like the Volkswagen GTI 16-valve and Acura Integra. However, it also throws in some nearly forgotten contenders like the Dodge Colt Turbo and Ford Escort GT. The angular Toyota Corolla FX16 GT-S rounds out the group.
It's fascinating to watch Motorweek run the quintet through the slalom, down the drag strip and on various roads. What's most striking in this clip is the difference in the definition of a performance car between then and now. With its 16-valve, 1.8-liter four-cylinder, the GTI is the burliest of the contenders with 123 horsepower, but it still takes 8.8 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour. By today's standards, that would make it a plain-jane economy car, and not even a particularly quick one.
