Our family is the original and only owner of this very nice 2+2. My father bought it new in 1974, and we had dreams of fully restoring it, but his passing and my work schedule unfortunately derailed those plans, so we never quite finished the last few steps of the project. Even so, about $20,000 of restoration work has been put into this vehicle over the years (with invoices on file). It has only been driven an average of 1,000 miles per year since the major work was done in 2000:

2013: repaired A/C (replaced expansion valve, dryer and thermo control; recharged coolant); repaired gas tank evaporator
2012: replaced alternator; fixed electrical wiring
2011: replaced battery, electric fuel pump, front brake pads; turned rotors
2009: replaced brake booster; serviced carburetors; repaired horn
2008: replaced fuel lines; repaired radiator
2006: replaced radiator; replaced A/C compressor & belt
2003: replaced brake drums and rotors
2001: rebuilt carburetors; replaced oil pump, transmission mount, T/C bushings; converted A/C to R134A
2000: complete body work and paint; complete interior (upholstery, roof liner, dashboard); new 17" wheels & tires; replaced struts; serviced transmission

The stereo is a great-sounding Pioneer DEH-2300 AM/FM/CD with an Alphasonik A240B external amplifier, Polk 6" speakers, and an automatic electric antenna. Upon request, I will also include the original AM/FM radio (I don't know if it works) and the original 14" hubcaps (sorry, I don't have the original wheels though).

It runs really nicely -- smooth engine, automatic transmission -- easy and reliable enough to drive daily, though I chose to drive it just on weekends. It has a switch added to manually start the electric fuel pump to prime the carbs for easier starts if it hasn't been driven in a while. It is very clean -- the upholstery is like new except for minor stains in the rear cargo area -- and no one has ever smoked in this car. The dashboard is like new.

This car always turns heads wherever I drive it -- not an easy thing to do in L.A.! It has been in California since 1978, and has never been in any floods or serious crashes. The title is clean. It is exempt from smog checks in California.

There are some minor paint chips and bubbles, mostly inconspicuous near the ground or on the edge of the door. The largest chip is about 1/8" across, in front of the left rear wheel well. The bubbling is near the ground level in front of both rear wheel wells (see pictures). The plastic surrounding the tail lights needs repainting (also pictured). There is creasing behind both front wheel wells (thanks to a mechanic lifting the car in the wrong place) with cracked paint on the right side. The underside had some signs of rust when I last saw it on a lift. The clock, windshield washer, and the rear defogger do not currently operate, and the wipers are a bit slow. A few center console light bulbs are burned out (choke, rear defogger, seat belt, gear indicator), as is the interior dome light. The plastic gear shift handle is cracked at the base. One front seat belt is fraying, and and there is some speckling in the in the metal parts where the shoulder belts enter the body (not sure what those are called). The ignition interlock (that prevented you from starting the car if seatbelts were unfastened) has been disabled (thankfully!). The tires have plenty of tread left (only 13,000 driven mies on them), but some cracks in the rubber are visible.

Although this car was never completely restored to show quality, it is still a beautiful vehicle right now, and if you wanted to finish the last few steps of a full restoration, you would have a huge head start. Questions are of course welcome through ebay messaging -- please don't hesitate to ask, and I'll try to get back to you the same day after I get off work. If you are in the Los Angeles area, we can arrange to show you the vehicle (in South Pasadena). I'm providing all this detail to give an honest and accurate description of the vehicle, including it's shortcomings, since I have to sell it as is. No reserve price!!

Datsun to unveil second model later this month

Sun, 08 Sep 2013

Datsun, Nissan's new sub-brand for emerging markets, has announced plans to unveil its second model. Its first, the Go, was unveiled almost two months ago, and promised affordable, connected motoring for five in a handsome hatchback body. Datsun is following that up with a pair of new models for Indonesia.
The first of these two new vehicles will be shown on September 17 in Jakarta, eschewing the typical auto show debut. It's targeted at so-called "risers," the nickname for a group of highly aspirational customers in the Indonesian market. Datsun developed it locally with help from Nissan, and it'll cost under 100 million Indonesian rupiah (about $8,900 at today's rates).
We'll have the full boatload of information on the newest member of the Datsun family when it debuts on September 17. Scroll on to read the full press release from Datsun.

37K miles in a 1967 Datsun Roadster

Tue, 11 Mar 2014

When we think of comfy, long-distance road cars, there are a few obvious choices. A Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Bentley Continental GT or, assuming fuel efficiency isn't paramount, a Range Rover are all good options for a road trip. But what if that road trip was 37,000 miles? Maybe something more reliable but still comfortable, then, like a Honda Accord. What about a 1967 Datsun Roadster?
As insane as it sounds, Scott Fisher is doing just that, running a Datsun 1600 Roadster across North America and racking up 13,500 miles in his first three months on the road. His total journey will see him pile over 37,000 miles on his red convertible. The car is lightly modified, but most of the work is for the sake of reliability and comfort, with a five-speed manual 'box, an upgraded radiator and electronic ignition.
Fisher's trip hasn't been all smooth, with a few typical bits of trouble. He also ran into some deer in Utah, quite literally, clipping one of the animals, which delivered quite a bit of damage to the passenger's front fender (hence the rear three-quarter view in our lead shot). Still, the car seems to be holding up well, as shown in this latest video from Petrolicious.
