Selling a 2003 Chrysler Town & Country van LXi edition
• 158,692 miles
• Onyx Green Pearlcoat (Dark green) with a taupe leather interior
• 3.8 liter V-6 engine
• 4 speed automatic transmission with traction control, front wheel drive
• 7 passenger seating
• Fuel mileage -- 16 miles per gallon around town, 23 miles per gallon highway (we just did a run to Blacksburg and got 23 miles per gallon)
• Runs well, always changed the oil every 4,000 miles, engine runs strong, transmission shifts smoothly
• There are no leaks and all fluids are clean and fully topped off
• Tires have 20,000 miles on them, so there's plenty of tread life left.
• Has a Class 3 trailer hitch (2" receiver) which we used for our bike rack
• Rear hatch has automatic lift
• Virginia inspection is good through November 2013
• AM/FM & CD player with seven speakers
Note: Three issues with the van
o There's a small dent in the tail gate from a ball of a trailer hitch -- someone with an extended trailer hitch backed into the van and of course took off without leaving a note. Structurally the rear hatch is fine; it just has the small dent.
o Check engine light is on, but when we pulled the codes from the diagnostic test it was inconclusive. The van has run great the three months with the check engine light on.
o The right side door electric opening/closing option no longer works; the door opens and closes by hand with no problem. The left side door electric opening/closing options still works great.
This is a great vehicle if you need inexpensive transportation that can move a lot of people or cargo. It's given us reliable service for nine years.
Car is located in Stafford County, Virginia. Thanks.

1950s car ads are timeless
Sat, Aug 8 2015Usually around the Super Bowl a few great car commercials show up, but for the most part auto ads today pale in comparison to the '1950s and '60s. In an era with a truly viable magazine industry, automakers would take out gorgeous full-page spreads to get the word out about their wares. It was also a time when imports were just hitting the US, and there was a boom in sports cars. Car and Driver has gone for a dig into its advertising archives from when the book was known as Sports Cars Illustrated for a truly great viewing experience. You can imagine a young Don Draper mulling over the copy for these ads, but some of it is laughably quaint today. For example, there's a great image of a driver whipping an Austin-Healey 100 around a track. The italicized red text proudly proclaims, "From 0 to 60 MPH in 10.5 seconds." One of the beautiful parts about these advertisements is that you seldom see photos of the cars. Instead, there are often detailed drawings that slightly distort the vehicles' lines. With this approach, the Porsche 356 ends up looking far more curvaceous than in real life. Plus, the front end of the Chrysler 300 looks large enough to land a helicopter on. The whole thing is worth scrolling through. There are some fascinating glimpses into auto history like an ad for Abarth exhausts before the brand was just known for tuning Fiats. Autoblog sell-it-yourself highlight: 2004 Chrysler Crossfire
Wed, Apr 19 2017Chrysler's Crossfire was the most fortuitous product of the Chrysler and Daimler-Benz merger when it launched, but also the most tormented. Clothed in Chrysler sheetmetal, the Crossfire sat atop a Mercedes platform and was propelled by an M-B drivetrain. The upscale vibe was obvious, while its outlier status on a Chrysler showroom dominated by minivans, was preordained. As Autoblog reported in May 2006, "production of the Crossfire [fell] from a peak of 35,700 in 2003 to just 12,500 last year. Introduced in 2003, the Crossfire managed about 28,000 sales in 2004, but less than 10,000 in 2005. Chrysler was so desperate to move Crossfires in late 2005 that it even engaged in a marketing stunt when it attempted to sell units on Overstock.com." Most specialized two-seaters (or 2+2 coupes) invariably run into marketing reality; once the novelty wears off, there is little sustained support for a small, impractical vehicle in modern America. Conversely, if looking for a recreational vehicle with a possible upside as an investment, you'll be hard pressed to find a more accessible example than the Crossfire. Our for-sale example, located in Randleman, NC, looks to be well maintained and has the preferred manual transmission. There are few credible guides for evaluating the price, but the $3,750 ask falls in line with a decent Miata of the same vintage and mileage. A buyer should remember that the Mercedes-sourced drivetrain of this era can be a financial swamp, but with a clean Carfax and pre-purchase inspection, Chrysler's Crossfire can provide real driving enjoyment. Marchionne impressed by 'that kid' Elon Musk
Wed, May 13 2015FCA boss Sergio Marchionne has a reputation as an incredibly canny businessman. Some examples of his acumen include finishing Fiat's takeover of Chrysler from a beachside home and winning a challenge with Luca di Montezemolo for the reins of Ferrari. The Italian exec recently took a trip to California and lavished praise on Elon Musk after a meeting with the Tesla CEO. Although, the compliment did come off as a little patronizing. "I'm incredibly impressed with what that kid has done," Marchionne said to Reuters about his conversation with Musk. Unfortunately, the FCA exec didn't go into detail about what he and Tesla boss discussed. Although, calling the 43-year-old billionaire a "kid" does seem a little rude, especially given Musk's success with Paypal, in the auto industry and at SpaceX. While in the Golden State, Marchionne also had a talk with Apple CEO Tim Cook. Although, he was similarly cagey about what the men discussed. "He's interested in Apple's intervention in the car, that's his role," Marchionne said to Reuters about the conversation without divulging more. The two companies already have some small links thanks to Ferrari's use of the tech giant's products. As one additional highlight for Marchionne's California trip, he took a ride in the Google autonomous car.
