1950 Chrysler Town & Country Newport woodie; one of 75 remaining of the 700 originally made.  This woodie has just over 38,000 original miles on the odometer.  The car was purchased by our family in 2002 as a driver and since then has undergone a sympathetic restoration, taking care to preserve as much of the original design and patina as possible. Extensive restoration has taken place "out of sight" to achieve this result.  Changes have only been made to enhance the car's drivability on modern roads while keeping its soul intact.  This car could be driven from coast to coast, on Route 66, entered in popular rallies or car shows, reside in a museum, or simply driven and enjoyed.  It's a happy car.  Virtually every time I've driven the car it has received a "thumbs up" from others who enjoy looking at it.  It is also a strikingly beautiful car.  Highlights of major work include installation of vacuum assisted front disc brakes, new carpeting, new Juniper Green paint, new chrome, and rebuilt fluid drive and gearbox.  Additionally, the car has never been in an accident and has no dings.

Recently (June, 2013), the car has had green, Wilton Wool carpeting installed throughout, including the trunk space.  In addition, new cloth upholstery to match the original was special ordered and (June, 2013) the front bench seat bottom and both doors were reupholstered.  No rips or tears exist either in the upholstery or the leather.  There is enough spare, new cloth to reupholster the entire interior.  This spare cloth measures 13 ft. x 5 ft. 6 in. Many other spares are also included with the purchase.  If requested, the sale will include two volumes of restoration notes, a CD showing over 1,000 digital photographs delineating work, a Chrysler workshop manual, a Classic Car cross reference parts guide, and a Chrysler spare parts catalog.  Please feel free to call me at 619-884-6572 or e-mail me with any questions at mikeloper@cox.net

Marchionne uses racial epithet to describe what must power future Alfa Romeo models

Wed, 16 Jan 2013

Sergio Marchionne and his Fiat empire have a lot riding on the US return of the Alfa Romeo brand. The endeavor has been in progress for what feels like a lifetime - certainly for as long as Fiat has had the Chrysler brand under its Italian wing.
It's not surprising that Fiat CEO Marchionne needs a perfect first Alfa to mark a return to America. And here's where things get dicey. Nobody would argue with Marchionne's insistence that Alfa Romeo's be powered by Italian engines - as Marchionne himself is quoted to have said at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, "There are some things that are well done in Italy."
If not what he said, then, it's how he said it that has eyebrows raised. "I cannot come up with a schlock product, I just won't. I won't put an American engine into that car. With all due respect to my American friends, it needs to be a wop engine." Wait, what's that?

The problem with how automakers confront hacking threats

Thu, Jul 30 2015

More than anyone, Chris Valasek and Charlie Miller are responsible for alerting Americans to the hacking perils awaiting them in their modern-day cars. In 2013, the pair of cyber-security researchers followed in the footsteps of academics at the University of Cal-San Diego and University of Washington, demonstrating it was possible to hack and control cars. Last summer, their research established which vehicles contained inherent security weaknesses. In recent weeks, their latest findings have underscored the far-reaching danger of automotive security breaches. From the comfort of his Pittsburgh home, Valasek exploited a flaw in the cellular connection of a Jeep Cherokee and commandeered control as Miller drove along a St. Louis highway. Remote access. No prior tampering with the vehicle. An industry's nightmare. As a result of their work, FCA US recalled 1.4 million cars, improving safety for millions of motorists. For now, Valasek and Miller are at the forefront of their profession. In a few months, they could be out of jobs. Rather than embrace the skills of software and security experts in confronting the unforeseen downside of connectivity in cars, automakers have been doing their best to stifle independent cyber-security research. Lost in the analysis of the Jeep Cherokee vulnerabilities is the possibility this could be the last study of its kind. In September or October, the U.S. Copyright Office will issue a key ruling that could prevent third-party researchers like Valasek and Miller from accessing the components they need to conduct experiments on vehicles. Researchers have asked for an exemption in the Digital Millennial Copyright Act that would preserve their right to analyze cars, but automakers have opposed that exemption, claiming the software that runs almost every conceivable vehicle function is proprietary. Further, their attorneys have argued the complexity of the software has evolved to a point where safety and security risks arise when third parties start monkeying with the code. Their message on cyber security is, as it has been for years, that they know their products better than anyone else and that it's dangerous for others to meddle with them. But in precise terms, the Jeep Cherokee problems show this is not the case. Valasek and Miller discovered the problem, a security hole in the Sprint cellular connection to the UConnect infotainment system, not industry insiders.

2017 Chevy Camaro Z/28 Nurburgring crash caught on video

Thu, May 12 2016

A 2017 Chevy Camaro Z/28 prototype crashed Thursday morning during testing on the Nurburgring in Germany. The driver appears to be unharmed, and the Camaro was not severely damaged. You can see the crash happen near the 1:35 mark of the video. Everything is going fine as the camo-clad Camaro accelerates onto the 'Ring. But as the driver goes through a turn the back wheels lock up. The driver then nails the brakes, the front wheels lock up, and he careens into the rail, getting airborne in the process briefly. The driver then navigates the Camaro to the other side of the circuit. A crumpled front fender and maimed aero is the only damage. View 11 Photos Mishap aside, this is an excellent look at what we believe is the track-focused Camaro Z/28. We see the huge wing in back and smaller winglets in front reminiscent of the Corvette Z06's Z07 Performance Pack. The new Z/28 has a throaty, almost buzzy V8 sound. We predict the seven-speed manual transmission from the Corvette, and perhaps the new 10-speed automatic trans from the Camaro ZL1, will be available. This prototype has a huge, gaping grille, blacked out wheels, and an aggressive front splitter. Look for the Z/28 to go on sale next year. A General Motors spokesperson said the company doesn't comment on development testing, but noted that "safety is our overriding priority." Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party.
