This could be either a great project car if you can do the needed repairs or it can be a great parts car if you have your own 1998 Sebring that needs some newer parts.
I've driven this car daily for about three years. The engine starts and runs smoothly and the transmission seems to shift smoothly as well. If I could do most of the necessary work myself I would definitely keep the car, but paying a repair shop to do the work would be fairly expensive. This car is fully drivable as is.
Here's what I've been told is needed:
- Valve cover gaskets
- Electronic Control Module in the steering column that controls the windshield wipers, turn signals, high beams, etc. The turn signals work, the wipers work, but the high beams cannot be turned off. Also when you use the right turn signal the intermittent wiper function engages.
- Upper and lower ball joints and control arm on the driver's side.
- New passenger side headlight assembly. I don't remember the exact reason, but the bulb does not light fully.
- A new connector for the rear defogger. I'm told its common for these to come off due to the movement of the glass when the top goes up and down.
- There are also two spots where rust is starting to appear. The rear passenger side quarter panel and the bottom of the driver's side door.
- The front leather seats cushions are ripped from 15 years of normal use.
Now for the positives:
- As mentioned earlier the car starts and the engine runs smoothly. I've had oil changes done about around every 3k miles.
- The transmission appears to be in fine working order.
- The convertible top works perfectly and has no leaks. It is a cloth top that was installed in 2010 and looks like new.
- Timing belt and water pump replace at 131k miles.
- Power windows and door locks all work
- Radio, Cassette player and 6-CD changer work perfectly.
- Power steering works fine with no leaks.
- All brake line tubing and rear brakes were replaced in 2011, including rotors
- The alternator was replaced in 2011
- A new fuel pump was installed in December 2012.
- New tires in 2010. Approximately 25k miles on them.

Chrysler recalling 780k minivans over fire risk
Fri, 09 May 2014Chrysler is recalling 780,000 of its Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans from the 2010 to 2014 model years due to the possibility of circuits overheating, which can lead to a fire. Of the 780,000 total vans being recalled, Chrysler estimates that 644,850 are in the US, 106,980 are in Canada, 8,009 are in Mexico, and 20,638 are in other markets. All of the affected vehicles were built between August 25, 2010 and October 31, 2013.
Chrysler's engineers discovered that beverage spills or exposure to moisture (from rain, snow, car washes, and the like) were linked to circuits shorting in the window switch assembly. Short circuits can overheat, and thus, cause a fire.
Chrysler will contact owners and let them know when they may schedule service, at which point, the window switches will be replaced. In the interim, the automaker says that owners may visit their dealers after May 14 to have the switches disconnected.
Continental Automotive recalls 5 million airbag control units
Thu, Feb 4 2016Takata isn't the only supplier having airbag problems. Rival manufacturer Continental Automotive Systems announced a recall of 5 million airbag control units fitted to vehicles from Honda, Fiat Chrysler Automotive, Mercedes-Benz, and even a certain Chrysler-based Volkswagen. This sweeping recall has actually been in progress for some time, although the exact scope is only now becoming evident. In October of 2015, Mercedes-Benz recalled 2008 and 2009 model year C- and GLK-Class vehicles because their Continental-made airbag control units could corrode. Such a condition could cause the airbags to deploy without cause or warning, or in the event of a crash, not deploy at all. You can read all about it in our post from last year. Now, Continental's recall is going wide. Alongside the already recalled C and GLK, you've already heard about the 2008 and 2009 Honda Accord airbag recall, which we reported on yesterday. Now, Fiat Chrysler is announcing the recall of the 2009 Dodge Journey, as well as the 2008 and 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town and Country, and their rebadged counterpart, the Volkswagen Routan. Yes, one manufacturer is recalling another manufacturer's vehicle. The models listed above only amount to about 580,000 vehicles out of 5 million bad airbag control units. And since Continental will notify manufacturers who will then issue their own recalls, it's extremely likely that more brands and vehicles will be ensnared. Stay tuned. GM, Ford, Honda winners in 'Car Wars' study as industry growth continues
Wed, May 11 2016General Motors' plans to aggressively refresh its product lineup will pay off in the next four years with strong market share and sales, according to an influential report released Tuesday. Ford, Honda, and FCA are all poised to show similar gains as the auto industry is expected to remain healthy through the rest of the decade. The Bank of America Merrill Lynch study, called Car Wars, analyzes automakers' future product plans for the next four model years. By 2020, 88 percent of GM's sales will come from newly launched products, which puts it slightly ahead of Ford's 86-percent estimate. Honda (85 percent) and FCA (84 percent) follow. The industry average is 81 percent. Toyota checks in just below the industry average at 79 percent, with Nissan trailing at 76 percent. Car Wars' premise is: automakers that continually launch new products are in a better position to grow sales and market share, while companies that roll out lightly updated models are vulnerable to shifting consumer tastes. Though Detroit and Honda grade out well in the study, many major automakers are clumped together, which means large market-share swings are less likely in the coming years. Bank of America Merrill Lynch predicts the industry will top out with 20 million sales in 2018 and then taper off, perhaps as much as 30 percent by 2026. Not surprisingly, trucks, sport utility vehicles and crossovers will be the key battlefield in the next few years, Car Wars says. FCA will launch a critical salvo in 2018 with a new Ram 1500, followed by new generations of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra in 2019, and then Ford's F-150 for 2020, according to the study. Bank of America Merrill Lynch analyst John Murphy said the GM trucks could be pulled ahead even earlier to 2018, prompting Ford to respond. "This focus on crossovers and trucks is a great thing for the industry," Murphy said. Cars Wars looks at Korean (76 percent replacement rate) and European companies more vaguely (70 percent), but argues their slower product cadence and lineups with fewer trucks puts them in weaker positions than their competitors through 2020.
