Chrysler names six new board directors

Executives may call the shots day-to-day at the world's leading automakers - much as they do at any other corporation - but the ultimate decision-making body remains the board of directors. And Chrysler has just named six new members to its board.
The appointments include Hermann Waldemer, the former CFO of Philip Morris International - the tobacco giant whose Marlboro brand has funneled untold billions into Ferrari as the Scuderia's title sponsor for decades, and on whose board Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne sits. Waldemer replaces Doug Steenland, who came to the Chrysler board after Northwest Airlines (at which he served as CEO) merged with Delta, and whose term on the board expired just days ago.
In addition to the Waldemer appointment, Chrysler has expanded its board with five more seats, all filled by existing group executives. Among them are Reid Bigland (head of US and Canadian sales and of the Ram truck brand), Fiat general counsel Giorgio Fossati, human resources director Michael J. Keegan, Jeep CEO Michael Manley, and group CFO Richard Palmer.

Chrysler is recalling nearly 26,000 of its 2015 200 sedans after customers reported that cars aren't shifting into park. Only vehicles equipped with the 3.6-liter V6 are affected by the recall, which includes both front-drive and all-wheel-drive models (which could represent as much as 20 percent of the recalled vehicles). The roughly 26,000 vehicles were built between March 17, 2014 and September 20, 2014. As for where those vehicles can be found, 22,107 were sold in the United States. The remaining vehicles went to Canada and Mexico, with 3,600 in the former and 213 in the latter. Chrysler is blaming the recall on "inconsistent assembly procedures" at a supplier's factory, and will replace the transmissions of any vehicles affected by the defect. Owners of V6-powered 200s are being told to use their parking brake in addition to shifting into park. Although five incidents have been reported, FCA isn't aware of any injuries or accidents. FCA US dealers will inspect and, if required, replace transmissions at no charge. In the interim, customers who own models with V-6 engines are advised to activate the vehicle's parking brake before shutting off its engine, because the shifter may incorrectly indicate park is engaged. Apple picks up former FCA quality boss Doug Betts

Apple made a significant personnel move that further signals its entry into the automotive world, hiring former Fiat Chrysler executive Doug Betts for an unspecified role. The information was obtained by The Wall Street Journal, which cites Betts' LinkedIn page. His career included stints at Toyota and Nissan before joining Chrysler Group (now FCA US LLC) in 2007, although his time there didn't end well. He left FCA, where he served as the automaker's head of quality, after the company's dismal showing in Consumer Reports' 2014 Annual Auto Reliability Survey. According to Betts' LinkedIn profile, which has since been pulled down, his job title reads "Operations – Apple Inc" in the San Francisco Bay area. Apple, meanwhile, was unwilling to divulge anything to the WSJ, although there's plenty to infer based on the hire. Betts wasn't the only big auto-related hire. According to the WSJ, Cupertino also lured an unnamed but "leading" autonomous vehicle researcher from Europe, who will be part of a team being setup to study driverless systems. Related Video:
