How fracking is causing Chrysler minivans to sit on Detroit's riverfront
Fri, 25 Apr 2014It's fascinating the way that one change to a complex system can have all sorts of unintended consequences. For instance, there are hundreds of new Chrysler Town and County and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans built in Windsor, Ontario, sitting in lots on the Detroit waterfront because of the energy boom in the Bakken oil field in the northern US and parts of Canada.
The huge amount of crude oil coming from these sites mostly use freight trains for transport, and that supply boom has resulted in a shortage of railcars to carry other goods. According to The Windsor Star, North American crude oil transport by train has gone from 9,500 carloads in 2008 to 434,032 carloads in 2013. Making matters worse, some North American rail infrastructure is still damaged because of this year's harsh winter, and that's slowing things down even further.
Chrysler admits to The Star that it has had some delivery delays due to the freight train shortage. In the meantime, it's using more trucks to deliver its vehicles. Trucking is a far less economical solution, partially because a train can carry so many more units at one time, but alternatives are slim. The Windsor plant alone has a deal for 33 trucks to distribute the minivans around Canada and the Midwestern US.
Shasta County woman leads police on totally groovy chase
Tue, Mar 8 2016Would you lead police on a high-speed chase through town for a Scooby Snack? A Shasta County woman did just that over the weekend in her very own Mystery Machine. On Sunday, March 6, a Shasta County probation officer contacted the Redding, CA police department about Sharon Kay Turman who was wanted for violating probation, PIX 11 reported. After a short search, police located Turman near the intersection of California and Shasta streets at the wheel of a 1994 Chrysler minivan painted up like the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo. Redding police attempted to stop Turman, but she apparently had an important mystery to investigate and she fled the scene. She sped down South Market Street with Redding Police in hot pursuit, running a red light and hitting four other vehicles in an intersection. This didn't stop the Mystery Machine however, and RPD broke off their chase as she entered southbound Highway 273. A California Highway Patrol helicopter picked her up on Hill Drive just north of Anderson, CA and she was pursued through town by Anderson PD at speeds in excess of 100 mph. She eventually abandoned the Mystery Machine on California Highway 36 and fled on foot. Turman's whereabouts, and the status of the Scooby Snacks, are currently unknown. She is wanted by both the Redding Police Department and Shasta County Probation. Both agencies told KRCRTV that they are asking anyone with information regarding her whereabouts to contact them. Six arrested from chop shop linked to Dream Cruise thefts
Sun, Sep 20 2015The spirit of this year's Woodward Dream Cruise was dampened after a rash of car thefts were reported. The vehicles included a 1966 Chrysler 300 Deluxe, a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette, and a replica of the 1971 Chevrolet Camaro owned by the founder of Papa John's Pizza. While these thefts outraged the collector car community, that same tight-knit group is now breathing a sigh of relief, as those responsible are behind bars. Detroit Police arrested six people – three adults and three teens – on Thursday, September 17, in connection with a chop shop operation linked to the collector car thefts. According to The Detroit News, one suspect is still at large. There's concern among Dearborn police that the same group responsible for the Dream Cruise thefts boosted some vehicles from a Ford factory. While the Camaro was recovered mostly whole and found in a giant bush on Detroit's west side, the fate of the Corvette or Chrysler has not been made known.
