1984 Chevrolet Suburban, Silverado Trim Package, 6.2L Diesel Engine, C20 - 3/4 ton

Low miles, less than 58,000 original miles.  Check the Carfax!

Starts, Runs, and Drives perfectly.  This truck has another 200,000 - 300,000 miles to go on it. (Just see the mileage that other Suburban Diesels being auctioned on Ebay have on them.)

Background:  I purchased this truck a little over a year ago from the original owners, who always kept it garaged and as you can see they barely drove it.  In fact it had the original tires on it when I picked it up (it now has new ones).  It has been my daily driver since I purchased it.  Very reliable and actually gets decent gas mileage (low 20's on the highway, high teens in town) for a truck of this size.  My daily commute was 10 miles each way in stop and go in-town traffic, no problem.  Last spring, I drove it to and from Boston to Cleveland, Ohio, 12 hours  each way at highway speeds, no problem. It can handle bumper to bumper traffic during the summer months, cold starting in the winter and it loves the highway.  Bottom line, this is a solid truck (mechanically, electrically, and cosmetically), that has a cool vintage look (that gets plenty of looks), with many years of good use ahead for the next owner.

The reason I am putting it up for auction:  I have taken a new job that requires me to drive 300+ miles a week AND drive into downtown Boston several times a week as well.  Needless to say a beast like this is not the ideal car when parking in the city.  My new car: Prius....not quite the same power or sound when hitting the pedal!

Mechanical:  This truck starts, runs, drives like new.  Idles smoothly.  Has plenty of power.  Likes warmer weather when starting, but with engine block heater plugged in this winter, I had no trouble starting it after a 0 degree night.  Power steering is tight.  Brakes are solid.  Automatic transmission works just as it should.  Would not hesitate to drive this to California is someone paid me to deliver it there (likes to cruise at 75 mph on the highway).

Electrical:  All electrical works great.  The radio cuts out sometimes, loose connection, but a slap on the dash (movie style!) gets it going again.  All lights (brake, head), turning signals work. Rear retractable window works too, either by switch on dash or key on tailgate.  Heater works, kicks a lot of heat.  This truck does not have air conditioning, but has two under dash vents that when opened in conjunction with the rear window, creates a great draft.  Wipers and fluid pump works great.

Body:  Body is in really good shape, but not car show perfect.  Blue original paint, looks almost like new, the previous owner garaged this truck and swore by waxing it regularly.  The large grey stripe down the sides has faded a little, probably a different type of paint than the blue.  Chrome looks great, still has great shine.  Cool retro hubs look great.  Diamond plate running boards in great condition.  The frame and undercarriage had a Rusty Jones undercoating treatment when purchased in 1984, which is why it is still in such great condition.  Full disclosure: There are a few small spots of rust.  On the passenger side, inside the front wheel well there is a small rust hole (2" diameter hole), this hole is only through the wheel well wall, and does not go into the body (see attached photo).  On the bottom interior edge of 3 out of the 4  doors there were some slight rust bubbles (have to open the doors and get down on your knees to see this) and the interior bottom edge of the tailgate had some rust bubbles and splitting as well (only seen when tailgate is opened).  So the good news is that none of this is seen from the exterior, when the doors are closed, and can only  be seen when opened and looking for it.  I treated all these rust issues mentioned above by:  Opening any bubbles with a screwdriver, drying area thoroughly with a hair drier, applied several coats of Rust Bullett (a powerful rust stopper/inhibitor), and applied several coats of matching blue touch up paint.  Also on the driver side in the grey paint area there is a 2' long scratch and two 3" diameter areas where the grey paint has flaked off, not sure why.  It is not rusting in these areas. See the photo showing this.  I left these untouched because I was planning on having this area repainted by a body shop, but never got around to it.  The silver plastic trim has also delaminated in a few spots but is still secure, only looks dirty because of it.  Bottomline:  body is in really good condition considering the vintage of the car, but it is clearly not ready for a Barrett-Jackson auction.  But it would not take much to take care of these minor cosmetic issues.

Glass:  All glass is great, no chips, cracks or crazing/hazing.  All pasenger and rear side windows are tinted.

Interior:  Very good condition, clean and a non-smokers car. Not pets. Upholstery is clean and orignial.  New floor mats. Dash and interior trim look great. The headliner is falling down and will require repair, I have held it up by using strips of formica.  There is small tear driver side seat, but I have custom seat cover covering it now, but it would not take much to have the this sewn back together.  The trunk space is huge, with the rear seats folded down you can fit a full sheet of 4' x 8' plywood, a 3' high stack of plywood!!

This truck is close to 30 years old, so over the past year I have replaced/updated some of the parts.

New Work Done/New Parts (done in the last year)

  1. 4 new Kelly Safari truck tires
  2. 2 new AC Delco batteries
  3. 2 new floor mats
  4. New brack master cylinder (and bled brake lines), new fluid.
  5. New radiator, new radiator fluid.
  6. New upper hose
  7. New lower hose
  8. New headlights
  9. New rear Chevrolet mudflaps
  10. 8 new glow plugs
  11. New glow plug relay
  12. New glow plug solenoid
  13. New fuel filter
  14. Oil change, new oil filter
  15. 2 new windshield wiper blades
  16. Rebuilt diesel injection pump
  17. Previous owner put 2 new mufflers and pipes on about 5 years ago.
  18. Just passed MA state inspection, good till March 2014.

Bottom line:  This a really cool, unique, reliable truck that will serve you well for many years to come.

Please don't hesitate to conact me with your questions, I can provide more photos and possibly video (if I can figure out how to upload it!).  If you are local, test drives are definitly possible.  This is the second car I have sold on Ebay, please see my history from that transaction for a Jeep CJ8 Scrambler (Sept. 17, 2005), and I have 100% positive feedback overall.  This truck is being listed locally too, so I reserve the right to end this auction at my discression at any time.  This truck comes with a clean and clear title.

I have done my best to list, describe, represent this truck as accurately and honestly as possible.

This truck is being sold AS IS.  There are no warranties expressed or implied.

GM admits goal of 500,000 EVs by 2017 won't be met

Sat, May 9 2015

After a little over four years of Chevy Volt sales, General Motors has a better handle on how many people it expects will buy cars with plugs. And it's less than the company thought back in 2012, when then-senior vice president of global product development, Mary Barra, said that GM expected to sell 500,000 "vehicles with electrification" by 2017. In a sustainability report released this week, GM says that half-million vehicle target will not be met but that it still, "believes the future is electric." In the report, GM says that, "For our commitment to electrification, our forecasted outlook currently projects us, along with the broader automotive industry, falling short of expectations for 2017. ... We continue to aspire to our stated goal." GM's electric lineup includes the Volt, the recently popular Spark EV, the slow-selling Cadillac ELR and upcoming Malibu Hybrid, CT6 plug-in hybrid and eAssist technology in the Buick LaCrosse and Regal. GM says it has 180,834 electrified vehicles on the road in the US today. In 2013, it had 153,034; 95,578 in 2012, and 39,843 in 2011. The company's next big plug-in vehicle will be the second-gen Chevy Volt, which is coming to market later this year, followed by the 200-mile Bolt EV coming, we think, in 2017. GM Employees on Mission to Transform Transportation Sustainability report outlines vehicle and manufacturing progress; sets new targets 2015-05-07 DETROIT – General Motors' just-released sustainability report chronicles efforts by the company's 216,000 employees to live out GM's newly defined purpose and values by earning customer loyalty, applying meaningful technology advances and improving the communities where it does business. These actions – led by CEO Mary Barra – further drive sustainability into the company's culture through building safer and smarter vehicles with less environmental impact. "GM will take a leading role in the auto industry's transformation as it undergoes an unprecedented period of change," said Bob Ferguson, senior vice president, GM Global Public Policy. "From GM's labs to its assembly lines, our people are driving the world to a better place through improved mobility." The company believes the future is electric, with billions of investment to support an all-in-house approach to the development and manufacturing of electrified vehicles. It now counts 180,834 on the road in the U.S – up from 153,034 in 2013.

Race Recap: Rolex 24 at Daytona was fast and feisty

Mon, Jan 26 2015

Let the record show that victory at the 2015 Rolex 24 at Daytona went to the No. 02 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Target/Ford EcoBoost Riley DP driven by Verizon IndyCar drivers Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan and NASCAR drivers Jamie McMurray and Kyle Larson. The winner did 740 laps to cover 2,634.3 miles in 24 hours and 57.667 seconds. That's a statement to this year's pace in spite of 18 cautions, two more than last year: the Michael Shank Racing Ligier got pole with a time of 1:39.194, slower than last year's pole time of 1:38.270; however, the winning car last year only did 695 laps. The fight for top honors was shaved to a four-car battle over the first third of the event. The No. 02 Ganassi car took the lead on the first lap, swapping it well into the night with the No. 01 Ganassi car, the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette DP, and the defending champion No. 5 Action Express Corvette DP, all of them staying within about 20 seconds of one another. The Action Express car had a fuel connector come loose and lost three laps getting towed back to the pits to have it reattached, but was back in the lead 18 hours in. The No. 01 Ganassi car dropped out with recurring clutch problems 22 hours in, retiring not long after. A race-within-the-race is where the concluding action happened, a seven minute, 30-second dash from the end of the last caution to the checkered flag. During the penultimate pit stops with an hour to go, Dixon was in second place followed Jordan Taylor in the Wayne Taylor Racing DP into the pits but beat him out, taking the lead. The Action Express car was in third. In the last pit stops of the race, Dixon gained even more time, getting a four-second advantage over Taylor. Then a full-course caution came out twenty minutes before the finish when a Prototype Challenge car hit the wall and caught fire, bunching up the field. That closed the pits, but the Wayne Taylor Racing car had to pit during that yellow because of a miscalculation of driver time. No driver can be behind the wheel for more than four hours in a six-hour period but Jordan Taylor was going to go over, so he came in to swap out for brother Ricky. That cost the team any chance of second place, since they took an additional drive-through penalty for entering closed pits. When the track went green again, Sebastien Bourdais in the Action Express car stayed all over Dixon for the final five laps but couldn't get around him.

Chevy might've pulled out of NASCAR if it weren't for new Gen 6 car

Wed, 20 Feb 2013

We've been on the fence with NASCAR for some time now. On one hand, it's some of the closest racing anywhere in motorsports, with actual passing and door-handle-to-door-handle action as a matter of course. But on the other, it's become template racing - a personality-driven sport more about the drivers than any sort of loyalty to a particular automaker. The Car Of Tomorrow format really rammed that message home, with a racecar's identity coming down to little more than headlamp stickers slapped on the nose. That's not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but we've wondered for some time what's in it for the automakers, who pay big money to stay in a series that has had little increasingly little do with street car sales, let alone innovation.
Apparently General Motors was beginning to wonder the same thing. In a new ESPN report, Rick Hendrick, team owner of Hendrick Motorsports, suggests that GM would have seriously considered leaving NASCAR if it wasn't for the move away from the COT to the new Gen 6 racer. According to Hendrick, GM North America boss Mark Reuss spearheaded the charge away from the 2007 COT and toward a racecar with clearer automaker ties - cars like the new Chevrolet SS racer shown above. Learn more about the fight for a closer-to-production look in the ESPN story at the link.
Now, if we could just get more rear-wheel drive V8 coupes into showrooms....
