ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA, THESE ENGINES DERIVED THE STOVE BOLT NICKNAME WHEN THEY WERE FIRST INTRODUCED IN 1929.. IN THE LATE 1940s AND EARLY 1950s, MANY STATES FOUGHT TENACIOUSLY TO THWART THE PROLIFIC MOTOR VEHICLE THIEVES.. LEGISLATORS IN SOME STATES DETERMINED THAT THE TRUE SEIRAL NUMBER SHOULD BE THE ONE THAT WAS STAMPED ON THE ENGINE, RATHER THAN THE NUMBER THAT WAS STAMPED ON THE EASILY REMOVED DOOR PLATE.   THIS WORKED OUT FINE UNTIL THE OLD ENGINE WAS REPLACED AND THE SERIAL NUMBER BECAME DISCARDED.  IT WAS SENT OUT  IN THE SCRAP... NOW, YEARS LATER, THIS IS BECOMING AN INCREASINGLY SERIOUS PROBLEM, WITH TITLES TRANSFERRED THAT SHOW A SERIAL NUMBER THAT DOES NOT MATCH----ANYTHING....  PLEASE NOTICE THE TWO PICTURES  REGARDING OUR OFFERING.. OUR TIRED OLD SPEEDOMETER WAS NOT IN ANY CONDITION TO RESTORE, SO WE PURCHASED A BRAND NEW ONE FROM CLASSIC PARTS OF KANSAS CITY.. IT LOOKS GREAT AND IS GUARANTEED TO WORK CORRECTLY FOR ONE FULL YEAR.. THE ORIGINAL HORN ALSO WORKS AND RETAINS USE OF THE ORIGINAL STEERING WHEEL HORN BUTTON.. ALSO IN THE ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT, WE HAVE JUST INSTALLED A BRAND NEW 12 VOLT BATTERY AND TWO BRAND NEW TAIL-LIGHTS...  OUR LITTLE TRUCK ALSO RECEIVED A FRESH TUNE-UP USING GENUINE DELCO PARTS FROM OUR GM PARTS DEPARTMENT.  THIS TUNEUP INCLUDED A NEW SET OF SPARK PLUGS, A NEW SET OF POINTS, A NEW CONDENSOR, A NEW SET OF PLUG WIRES AND A NEW DISTRIBUTOR CAP & ROTOR.  AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT LOCKING UP THE VALUABLES, AS WE HAVE REPLACED BOTH EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLES WITH NEW REPRODUCTIONS FROM JIM CARTER'S ANTIQUE TRUCK PARTS.. THIS IS INDEED A SCARY THOUGHT EVEN WITH THE STANDARD 6 VOLT SYSTEM--- BUT WITH THE DOUBLE VOLTAGE, 12 VOLT POWER IN PLACE IT COULD BE DEVASTING! ! !  ALL OF OUR TRUCKS HAVE BEEN UPGRADED AT THE STARTER WITH A MODERN 40 AMP FUSE THAT YOU SEE IN THE PICTURE ABOVE.. DOWNTOWN DESOTO WAS BUILT IN 1951 BY ARCH SADLER AND ORIGINALLY HOUSED THE SADLER MOTOR CAR COMPANY. Buick takes top spot in 2022 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

People, economies, and supply chains weren't the only things continuing to get sick over the past year. The 2022 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS) is out, showing the average rate of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) during the first 90 days of ownership increased overall. The average figure for the 32 ranked manufacturers in 2020 was about 166 problems per 100 vehicles. In the 2021 IQS, that dropped to an average of 162. This year, the average jumps to 180 problems. J.D. Power says that figure is a record high over the 36-year history of the study. Buick leapt to the top of the rankings this year with the fewest issues, at 139 problems per 100 vehicles in the first 100 days of ownership. After Dodge became the first American automaker to lead the IQS in 2020, followed by Ram in 2021, this year marks a three-peat for U.S. carmakers. Dodge took second this year at 143 PP100, Chevrolet third with 147 PP100, Genesis the first luxury maker on the chart in fourth with 156 PP100. Between February and May, this year's study gathered responses to 223 questions from more than 84,000 new 2022-model-year car owners and lessees. The questions are designed to zero in on real-world problems new owners encounter with nine categories of vehicle features: Infotainment; features, controls and displays; exterior; driving assistance; interior; powertrain; seats; driving experience; and climate. As has been the case in the past few year, infotainment has proved to be the most problematic bugbear making scores worse. Considering features individually, six of 10 of the worst problem areas dealt with infotainment, causing infotainment's score of 45 PP100 to be 19.5 PP100 worse than the second-placed feature. Consumers ranked getting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to connect reliably as the most troublesome.  GM didn't just score with Buick, which was one of only nine of the 33 ranked brands to show improvement this year. The conglomerate earned first place with the fewest PP100 among all the automaker groups, and scored the most model-level awards with nine, ahead of BMW with eight and Hyundai Group with three.  This year's study again showed a gap between luxury and mass-market makers, thought to be down to the amount of tech in luxury vehicles that consumers aren't properly informed about or that doesn't act as expected — that latter issue exacerbated by the chip shortage.

GM diesel pickups first to undergo extra EPA, CARB testing

The effects of Volkswagen's long-running diesel emissions evasion are starting to spill over to other automakers, but General Motors is taking things in stride. The 2.8-liter, four-cylinder Duramax in the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon is the first engine to get extra scrutiny by the Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board, Automotive News reports. Rather than just the usual in-lab test, it's also being checked on the road. However, the extra evaluation shouldn't have any impact on when the trucks with his mill hit dealers later this fall. "We're in our final stages of the EPA certification, and our launch is on track," Chevy spokesperson Otie McKinley tells Autoblog. The four-cylinder diesel in the trucks makes 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, and the automaker is touting low NOx production. In the announcement for the Colorado's specs, the company calls it "the cleanest diesel truck engine ever produced by General Motors." The tech includes exhaust gas recirculation to lower combustion temperatures and improve emissions. There's also a urea tank like on the bigger diesels for full-size trucks, and it gets refilled in time with oil changes. An indication on the instrument panel lets drivers know when that's needed, too. Even with the more demanding testing, the company doesn't seem too worried about the four-cylinder passing. "Part of our development process is on-road and off-road [laboratory] testing," Scott Yackley, Chevy Trucks assistant chief engineer, said to Automotive News. In the wake of the VW scandal, the EPA has pledged more rigorous testing. Before, on-road emissions evaluations were largely limited to heavy-duty vehicles, but the agency has decided to apply the checks more often to other models. There's also now greater cooperation with Canadian authorities.

Before Chevrolet's Redline, there was the Saturn Red Line

While Chevy rolls out Redline special editions across more of the lineup at this year's Chicago Auto Show, we've been eating some 'member berries and started thinking about the last time GM used the term. Back in 2004, Saturn rolled out Red Line (two words) editions of the Ion and Vue. The lineup was joined by the Sky Red Line in 2007, and the second-generation Vue kept the tradition going in 2008. This was in the heady days of the mid-2000s, before the financial crisis and GM's bankruptcy reorganization that saw the end of Saturn. The press release headline for the 2008 Sky is now cringe-worthy: "Hot-selling Sky helps drive Saturn product renaissance." Performance lineups were the hot new thing, as automakers attempted to cash in on the tuner trend popularized by The Fast and the Furious. Chevy had SS models, Pontiac had GXP, and Saturn had Red Line. Across the Detroit Metro area, Dodge had a slew of SRT models, and Ford's Special Vehicle Team brought us the SVT Lightning pickup, the SVT Focus, and a smattering of hopped-up Mustangs. The performance cred of Red Line models varied from car to car. The Ion Red Line shared the same engine as the original Chevy Cobalt SS, a 205-horsepower supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 65 hp more than stock. Car and Driver tested one with a 0-to-60-mph time of 6.1 seconds and said the Ion "tears down the wall that has separated enthusiasts from the Saturn brand for so long." The Vue Red Line, meanwhile, came with the same optional Honda-sourced 3.5-liter V6 you could get in the regular Vue, and added a stiffer, lower suspension, bigger wheels with more aggressive rubber, and recalibrated steering assist. When the Vue was redesigned for the 2008 model year, the Vue Red Line was a similar proposition. The engine was now from GM, and up 7 horsepower to 257, but you could get it in both Red Line and XE trim. Aside from the tire and suspension upgrades, Red Line models now came with a unique front fascia and rear exhaust cutouts. The most exciting Red Line, of course, was the high-performance version of the Sky roadster, which shared underpinnings with its Pontiac Solstice twin. This model came with GM's hot 2.0-liter Ecotec Turbo, good for 260 horsepower. The extra power was crucial in covering up the Sky's unfortunate manual gearbox ratios, which left the non-turbo model aching for torque in lower gears. As we all know, Saturn was taken by the grim reaper in 2009 after an attempt to sell the brand to the Penske Group.
