Beautiful, rust-free (other than a tiny spot on drivers floorboard - see pics), stock, original, complete 1951 Chevrolet 3100 5 window, half-ton, short-bed pickup truck from the desert Southwest. This barn/garage find sat in a dry, climate controlled garage for almost 20 years waiting for a restoration that never happened. It ran well up to that point but hasn't been started since. The engine turns over and the oil is still pretty clean even after all these years.

According to the VIN of 9JP D 8727, this truck...

9 ...was built in Norwood, OH
J ...in 1951
P ...is a 3100 half-ton short-bed
D ...was built in April
8727 ... and was the 8727th truck built that year

The sheet metal (especially the cab) on this truck is amazing. There have never been any rust repairs ever, anywhere; what you see is what you get. Cab corners are excellent. Primer partially covers what looks like an ancient green respray over the original green. And the original green looks very similar to Forest Service green (see firewall pic). Doors, fenders, hood, grill and bed are great other than the passenger side right front fender. It's got a few dents but is very repairable. Just to be safe, I am including an extra fender (see pics). Also, the grill was replaced with one that is in better condition but the original is included (see pics). Most glass is out but is in good shape (particularly the hard to find curved glass - see pics). The bed has a piece missing in the front (see pics) but it is readily available in the aftermarket. In my opinion, the purity of the sheet metal (and the fact that it's a 5 window) is a MAJOR plus for anyone contemplating a restoration candidate.

The interior is in great shape as well. Seat has been reupholstered to a high standard (see pics). Dash is uncut and unbutchered. Gauges, buttons, knobs and levers are either in place or come with the truck. Kick panels (a notorious rust area) are rock solid (see pics). Again, the only rust spot (and it's very minor) is a small area on the drivers floorboard. The cab corners from the inside view also look excellent. And window frames, heater, glass, wiring harness, etc. are all included with the truck (see pics).

Running gear is solid and complete. The firewall still has original markings from the assembly line supervisor (see pics). Engine is the 216.5CID Stovebolt inline 6 and it spins freely. It ran well until it was placed in storage and hasn't been started since. At some point, electrical was converted from 6 volt to 12 volt. Generator is a vintage AC Delco unit. Transmission is the 4 speed manual. Clutch works well and it shifts in and out of gear properly. A newer 6 lug (stock bolt pattern) Dana 44 rear differential was installed to improve drivability. The installation involved no welding and is very sanitary. If you are contemplating a restomod project it should probably stay in place. I am including a stock rear differential including torque tube and driveshaft (if you want it) at no extra charge. This truck also comes with chrome rims that have baby moon hubcaps. They look awesome but detract from originality. I am including 4 vintage six lug rims (if you want them) that would make it look more stock (see pics).

This is what I consider to be a Holy Grail truck. That means 5 window, short-bed, half-ton, rust-free, complete and original. It represents an exceptional basis for any kind of upgrade. The quality of what you begin with has a direct correlation with the quality of what you finish with. I hope it ends up in the hands of someone who gives it the stewardship it deserves. My name is Chris and I am happy to answer any and all questions. Please call me at 435-669-1470. I also have about 150 pictures so you can look at every nook and cranny. Please send me a non-Ebay email address and I will send them to you. It is located in the dry, desert community of St. George, UT (about 100 miles north of Las Vegas). Thank you very much for your interest.

2015 Chevy Colorado takes Motor Trend Truck of the Year calipers [w/videos]

Wed, Dec 3 2014

The final winner of Motor Trend's prestigious Golden Calipers has been named, with the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado taking the title of 2015 Truck of the Year, likely shocking those who thought Ford's all-aluminum, next-generation F-150 would take the crown. But win the Colorado did, beating not only the new Ford, but two other brutish Blue Ovals in the F-450 and Transit. The midsize pickup also bested its brethren from General Motors, beating the heavy-duty Chevy Silverado 3500, GMC Sierra Denali 2500 and the GMC Canyon, the Colorado's fraternal twin. After an unprecedented two-year stint with the Golden Calipers, Ram sat this year's awards out. Most impressive about the Colorado's victory isn't that it simply beat the US market's other trucks, it did so with a unanimous vote. Praise from MT's editors focused on the trucklet's price, spacious interior, fit and finish and performance. Former Autoblog staffer Jonny Lieberman called the Colorado's steering the best he'd "ever experienced on any truck, full stop," in MT's awards article. "After days of testing, hundreds of miles on the road, and our most rigorous truck testing program to date, our editors unanimously selected the Chevy Colorado as our 2015 Truck of the Year," said MT boss Edward Loh. "Colorado is a smart, capable, and refreshingly honest truck that makes a strong value and efficiency statement. It's perfectly sized and suited for the needs of many of today's truck users." The Colorado joins the 2015 Volkswagen Golf and 2015 Honda CR-V among Motor Trend 2015 award winners. Scroll down for video commentary from General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Loh and a clip of the Golden Calipers being handed over. Also, check out GM's full press release on its big win. Recharge Wrap-up: U of M wins Solar Challenge, family attempts record-breaking e-bike ride

Thu, Aug 14 2014

The University of Michigan Solar Car Team has won the 2014 American Solar Challenge. It is the team's eighth national championship, its fifth in a row, and its first using Siemens' product lifecycle management (PLM) software. The race took place over 1,722 miles and seven days traveling across eight states. The team's car, called "Quantum," outpaced the nearest competitor by four hours. Looking forward, Michigan Solar Car Project Manager Pavan Naik says, "The switch to Siemens tools will give us the ability to model and simulate everything and truly allow us to optimize the performance of our new vehicle. As we start on our quest to win the World Solar Challenge in 2015, we'll be leveraging a full complement of PLM solutions." Read more in the press release below. The EcoCar3 competition, in which teams will convert Chevrolet Camaros into hybrid electric cars, begins in September. The various college teams will have four years to lessen the car's environmental impact as much as possible while maintaining performance and, of course, that cool Camaro design. EcoCar3, which is put on by the US Department of Energy and General Motors, kicks off with a workshop in Novi, Michigan from September 16 - 18. Read more at the DOE website at the dedicated EcoCar3 site or watch the announcement video at our previous post. Zap and Jonway Auto are shifting to a high rate of EV production. Zap already has two lines creating the Urbee EV to met demand, and is switching over a third to make electric minivans and SUVs. The company aims to produce 30,000 EVs by 2015 for the Chinese market. Zap says it has a backlog of 25,000 Urbee orders. Read more in the press release below. A family of four hopes to make a world record-breaking, 6,000-mile electric bike journey this fall. The family, which recently drove from Argentina to Montana in a pickup with a camper, will ride from Montana to Maine, then down the East Coast to Florida in an attempt to break the record for longest electric bicycle ride. They'll use two bikes. The Father, Thomas, will ride one of the bikes carrying one of the children, while the rest of the family rides in a support vehicle, with the mother, Dylan, riding the second bike when they can find others to drive. They have started a crowdfunding campaign for some of the equipment needed to document the trip. See the video below or read more at Treehugger.

Mark Reuss: GM can't afford product 'misses,' has 'thought about' CT6 V-Series

Thu, Apr 9 2015

Mark Reuss is a busy man. He oversees General Motors' global product portfolio, an all-encompassing task for a company that sold more than 9.9 million cars and trucks last year. When GM launches a well-received product, like the road-going rocket ship that is the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 – he gets credit. When the company stumbles with the slow-selling Chevy Malibu or grapples with fallout from the decade-old Saturn Ion and its flawed ignition switch, he gets blamed. GM owners, the press and sometimes the federal government, demand answers. Bob Lutz famously held the job before Reuss. So did Mary Barra, who's now GM's chief executive. There's a New GM, but the lineage is connected to a long history. When he's not thinking product, Reuss, an executive vice president, also runs the purchasing and supply chain for the company, which is still one of the largest industrial empires in the world. We caught up with Reuss on the floor of the New York Auto Show, where GM had just rolled out two crucial new products: the 2016 Cadillac CT6 and the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu. Speaking with a small group of reporters, Reuss delved into a variety of subjects, including the new Malibu, Cadillac's future (he thinks the ATS-V is going to "flame the M3 and M4"), and other topics. On fixing the Malibu: "We can't miss. We can't have those kinds of misses [like the previous generation] on our cars and crossovers and trucks. We can't do that. If we do that, we give a reason for someone to go buy something else. It's that simple. "On a car like the Malibu we have a chance to really fix all of that, which we have, and then lead. Then you've got a real opportunity there. So that's what we've really been focused on here – to fix those things." He later added: "We need that car here to transform Chevrolet desperately because it's the heart of the market. And when you think of Chevrolet, people will come back and think about what we did with the [new] Malibu and the Cruze... It's hugely important to us." On Cadillac: "If we go out and try and out-German the Germans, it's probably not going to work. We've got an opportunity here generationally where there's a lot of people younger than me that have parents that drove BMWs and Mercedes, and I think there's an opportunity there for those people to drive something different than what their parents did, and I think that's always been an opportunity in the auto industry if you look at the history of it.
