Up for auction is my 1978 Factory 4 speed Monte Carlo I bought new in December 1978.  This unbelievable original paint beauty has brought home multiple Super Chevy and Chevy Hi-Performance event trophies and continues to draw a crowd wherever it goes.  The original factory paint (35 years of hand rubbing and maticulous care) will flat blow you away, this car hasn't seen rain in more than 30 years.  On top of being a black, original LG3 (305) and saginaw M20 4 speed (1 of 1,719 in '78) Monte, it also was ordered with T-Top and Posi Rear with dealer installed 3.23 gears.   The frame and undercarrage is equally as clean as the top of the car.   The interior is perfect with mostly original surfaces, I redid the headliner in 2001 and a couple years ago re-dyed any plastic pieces that were beginning to fade and replaced the carpet.  The dash, seats and door panels look as good as they did the day I brought it home in '78, the steering wheel is a LaCarra red leather wrapped C-3 Corvette style wheel (factory tilt column).  The car was ordered w/o AC though did receive the Lux Seat package as well as HD suspension(F40), HD radiator & HD electrical system.  The dealer installed the half vinyl roof (its original and like new condition also) and the rearend gears in place of "performance" 3.08 option.  In '96 with 46K (now has 55K) miles on the car I pulled the original 305 and Saginaw trans (they go with the car) and added the GM Crate ZZ3 350 (aluminum head & roller cam - 345 HP) motor and Borg Warner Super T-10 4 speed (from a Z28).  Accessories include CenterForce Dual Friction clutch, Hurst Indy Shifter, Edelbrock (#1406) 600 carb, Edelbrock TES ceramic coated headers, extremely sneaky quiet 2.5" Dynamax Turbo mufflers with stock looking exhaust tips, Hotchkis springs, KYB Gas Shocks, Autometer tach & underdash guages, Alpine CD,   Billet valve covers, Lokar dip stick, K&N aircleaner and the carb and ignition were custom dialed in for max performace.  Wheels are 16" Billet Centerlines and Tires are Goodrich ZRs, while they still have almost full tread and look new, should probably be replaced if anything other than cruising and car shows are on your agenda - no cracking or signs of age, they've just lost their stickiness.  I relined brakes pads and calipers less than 500 miles ago.  Everything works and the car is extremely solid.  Never been hit, rusted, pulled apart, or otherwise molested, even all the glass is original.  This is a relatively light car (<3,100 lb) and well balanced and performs extremely well.  The condition of this maticulously cared for rare 4 speed equipped Performance and Show Monte will flat blow you away, people ask me all the time who painted it and when was it restored.  I hate to sell it though unfortunately must choose between it and a Corvette I bought several years ago.  I am not interested in any trades, see my CarDomain webpage for additional history and photos.  http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3156772/1978-chevrolet-monte-carlo/  you may reach me via email anytime: ac216@comcast.net   The car is in the Atlanta area, I would be glad to allow you to inspect it if your serious.  This car will be sold as is, no warranty.  A $500 non refundable deposit is required in 48 hours if my reserve is met and you are the highest bidder, funds to clear my bank before you take the car.

Race Recap: 2013 Indianapolis 500 better than Bollywood; all the emotion, none of the music [spoilers]

Mon, 27 May 2013

If the 2013 Indy 500 were a movie it would be the one expected to win all the little statues come awards season, and if it were an athlete it would have made spectators watch in awe as it broke record after record. And this kind of talk comes after last year's race was considered one of the best ever - the last lap hijinks in 2012 and Takuma Sato's crash leading to a podium ceremony straight out of a Golden Globes tearjerker.
But this year's race delivered more than anyone expected, from the 250,000 fans to the commentators to the IndyCar series itself and, finally, to the guy who hopped through a two-mile window on Lap 197 to take the lead and keep it until the end.

How long will the 'golden age' of performance last?

Sat, Mar 26 2016

High-powered sports and luxury cars were everywhere at the New York Auto Show, prompting the obvious question for enthusiasts: How long will this golden age of performance last? Industry leaders have some time before regulations elevate the Corporate Average Fuel Economy level in 2025. Even then, they expect cars rippling with power to survive in some form. "Is it the end of an era," I don't think so," said Ola Kallenius, Daimler AG board member for Mercedes-Benz cars marketing and sales. "That performance element of individual mobility I don't think will ever go away." Kallenius, who oversaw the company's AMG division from 2010-2013, expects it to continue to grow. Last year, AMG sold a record 68,875 units around the world, an increase of 44.6 percent over 2014, with strong growth in the US, China, and Germany. Still, there's always the potential for gas to spike, and pending fuel economy regulations are looming. That could lead AMG to add electrification to its products, Kallenius said, pointing to the electric SLS as a test case. Chevy is also thinking ahead, said Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer of the Camaro. He wouldn't bite when asked about electrification for the Camaro (he did say "never say never"), but admitted in 2025 "it's going to be pretty tough to sell V8s." For now, things are rosy for muscle cars, and Chevy confidently showcased the 640-hp Camaro ZL1 in coupe and convertible form in New York. "I think that this is truly the golden age of performance," Oppenheiser said. It's hard to disagree. News & Analysis News: The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF was a show-stopper in New York. Analysis: There was a palpable energy when this RF — for Retractable Fastback — was revealed the night before the show at a trendy off-site venue near the Hudson River. Even as a parade of SUVs and flashy luxury cars rolled out the rest of the week, the Miata remained a hot topic. The Retractable Fastback is really a clever targa top, with part of the roof stowing behind the seats, adding about 100 pounds compared to the standard convertible. It makes the car more practical and arguably more attractive. The RF continues Mazda's tradition of selling the Miata with a hardtop variant. The first and second generations offered a detachable one, and a power retractable hardtop (a $1,700 option) was available on third-gen models. Judging by its reception in New York, the RF could prove to be even more popular than its predecessors.

Auto Show Notebook: Legendary Continental name inspired Lincoln's designers

Thu, Apr 2 2015

What's in a name? A lot for the Continental concept, and it gave Lincoln designers a sense of purpose as they styled the brand's upcoming flagship sedan. "The moment that we told them, it was amazing," Lincoln president Kumar Galhotra said. "They totally got it." "It" is cutting-edge technology wrapped in stately, large-sedan design. It's a nod to Lincoln's storied past, but a signpost for where the brand is heading. Though the Continental name dates to the late 1930s, Lincoln designers avoided making the concept overtly retro. "You can't let it pull yourself back too far in history, but you've got to design a car that lives up to the name," Galhotra said. Speaking to Autoblog on the floor of the New York Auto Show where the Continental formally debuted Wednesday, the Lincoln president reiterated that the car is on track to launch in 2016. It will compete against the Audi A6, Lexus GS, BMW 5 Series and other large luxury sedans. After its debut, the concept in New York will fly to China – another critical market for Lincoln – for display there. It will be replaced in New York by a prototype without an interior. The Continental is the latest high profile play by Lincoln to raise its image with consumers, who have either ignored or forgotten about it amid steep competition in the luxury sector from German and Japanese brands and a potentially resilient Cadillac. Lincoln sales are essentially flat compared with 2014 through the first quarter of this year, with total volume of 21,478 units. The middling start to 2015 comes on the heels of nearly 16-percent sales growth last year spurred by the launch of the MKC and the prominent signing of Matthew McConaughey to star in Lincoln advertisements. Other News, Notes & Quotes Speaking of names, Chevrolet did its homework before deciding to proceed with "Malibu" for its new generation of midsize cars. "We went out and researched it," said Alan Batey, president of General Motors North America. "People actually like the name 'Malibu,'" he said. Admittedly, the current Malibu has struggled in the marketplace against entrenched competitors, Batey said, but he's optimistic its awareness and historical value are assets to the dramatically redesigned sedan."The name's strong," he said. Meanwhile, in other Chevy news, the brand kicked off a new marketing campaign, "Real People, Not Actors" Wednesday. It will show consumers interacting with Chevys and their spontaneous reactions to the vehicles.
