1984 Monte Carlo Ss Very Nice Driver 70619 Miles on 2040-cars
Vanceburg, Kentucky, United States
I bought this car on eBay a few years ago. The first part of the description is what the previous owner wrote
and I have found it accurate. 1984 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. Runs and drives good (currently driven everyday and has current NC tags and inspection). Previous owner has swapped out the 305/3-speed combo for a 350/overdrive automatic (200R). Smoke-free. Also has a new tweed headliner and matching visors (previous owner had started to restore). Front end is lowered with drop spindles, rear springs are cut. Ball joints and bushings where replaced when the work was done. Wheels are stock, but in good shape. Power steering. Front disc brakes. Has optional 3.42 rear gears. Aftermarket gauges for H2O, Oil and volt. Fresh rebuild on the engine (approx 3000 mi). Engine has pop-up Keith Blacks, polished dual plane aluminum intake, and Holley carb. Dual Flowmasters. Battery is new and radiator was replaced when the engine was changed. AC compressor has been removed and I don't know the condition/function of the rest of the system. Cruise control does not work. Electric door locks were still, so I've unhooked the solenoids so they work manually. Note: A few people have questioned the validity of the car being a true SS. It is and the title verifies that. In 1984 the bench seat and column shift was an option for the SS and about 15% of the SS’s sold were like that. What I have done to the car: I have changed the oil and driven it approximately 1000 miles since purchase. I have added chrome valve covers and new chrome air breather. I didn’t like the tires so the front ones are new. All new interior upholstery New carpet New window felts New power window motors New outside door handles New door seals New trunk seal New door hinge kits New paint New Z28 style cowl hood scoop No cruise No air conditioning No power door locks When I got the car it had very little rust. The lip at the bottom of the trunk lid was the worst. That was repaired and water access was stopped. I drive the car to work a couple days a week in the summer on nice days. The paint looks good from a few feet out but is not perfect. It has a few medium sized runs that are noticeable on close inspection. It has never failed to start and run for me. It runs pretty strong for a big car. I believe the mileage to be accurate at 70619 currently. The car has a couple of fluid leaks. They are not bad enough that I have to check the fluids every time I drive it but they will spot the floor when it’s parked. I think one is the power steering unit and the other I’m not sure about. There are a couple of small cracks in the dash and the instrument cluster panel needs some attention. I know there are some things I am forgetting so if you are interested in this car please ask questions or even better, come see it. This is not a show car but it would be the perfect candidate for making one. It is as solid of a 1984 car your likely to find. The photos will show the car on the trailer the day I bought it and a few others of it now. |

GM finds steering flaw, decides it doesn't warrant a recall
Tue, Apr 14 2015Guess what? General Motors is back in the spotlight for not recalling something. This time, though, not only does the company have an argument against a recall campaign, but its position is supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. According to The New York Times, over 50 owners of GM vehicles have reported instances of stuck or seized steering after driving long distances without moving the wheel. One owner complained to NHTSA that the "locked" steering of their 2013 Buick Verano caused a collision with a concrete barrier in a construction zone. Along with the 2013 to 2014 model year Verano sedans, Chevrolet Cruze and Malibu sedans are also affected. Considering the popularity of those models, GM needs to have a reason for not issuing a recall, right? "Based on a very low rate of occurrence – ranging from less than one half to less than two incidents per thousand vehicles – and the fact that the condition is remedied when the wheel is turned, GM determined this was not a safety issue," spokesman Alan Adler told The Times. The company has, however, issued a technical service bulletin for owners that complain of the problem. The fix is nothing more than a software update that is covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles from new. NHTSA cited GM's actions, along with descriptions of the problems from customers, in its decision not to issue a recall, with spokeswoman Catherine Howden saying, "the symptoms described would be a brief, perceptible change in steering feel that has little to no effect on the driver's ability to safely steer the vehicle." "When terms like 'notchy,' 'stick,' 'slip' or 'feel' are used, it does not indicate a meaningful increase in steering effort," Howden told The Times via email. What do you think? Is GM in the wrong here? Should there be a recall, or is the issue so limited as to not warrant one? Have your say in Comments. GM recalling 1.4 million older vehicles for oil leak fire risk
Tue, Oct 27 2015General Motors is recalling 1,411,332 older vehicles with its 3.8-liter V6 yet again due to a fire risk. Specifically, there are 1,283,340 of them in the US, and the affected models are the: 1997-2004 Pontiac Grand Prix 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 1998-1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue 1997- 2004 Buick Regal The fault with these vehicles is that oil can drip onto the hot exhaust manifold during hard braking, which can potentially cause of fire. In the last six years, there have 19 reported minor injuries from this problem but no crashes or fatalities, according to the company. Spokesperson Alan Adler also told Autoblog: "GM has reports of 1,345 fires in vehicles that were repaired under two previous recalls for this issue." At this time, GM is still developing a remedy for the problem. According to Adler, the company advised owners to park these vehicles outside for the previous recalls. "The cars can be safely driven. In cases where a customer reported an engine fire while driving, smoke was reported, which would be an indication of a malfunction," he said. This is GM's fourth recall for this problem since 2008, according to The Detroit News. At one point it was believed that aging valve cover gaskets allowed the oil to leak out and drip onto the manifold. A campaign in 2009 covered nearly 1.5 million of these models through the 2003 model year for the same issue. At the time, dealers installed new spark plug wire retainers as a fix. Related Video: GM Statement: General Motors is recalling 1,283,340 older sedans and coupes in the U.S. from the 1997 to 2004 model years because drops of oil may be deposited on the hot exhaust manifold through hard braking, which can cause engine compartment fires. GM is working on a remedy. The company is aware of post-repair fires in some vehicles but no crashes or fatalities. There have been 19 reported minor injuries over the last six years. These vehicles with 3.8-liter V6 3800 engines are affected: 1997-2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 1998-1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue and 1997-2004 Buick Regal. Including Canada, Mexico and exports, the total population is 1,411,332.
