SELLER REMARKS |

In the early '60s, if performance was your goal, the Impala was an excellent choice. Just the right size, beautifully styled without being over-wrought, and powered by a variety of engines, you could tailor it to just about any taste. That's just as true today as this 1964 Impala SS hardtop demonstrates: a potent small block, trick Air Ride suspension system, 4-wheel disc brakes, and plenty of class.
Bright red is what most folks imagine when they think of the '64 Impala, but when you paint it Tuxedo Black it definitely takes on a sinister edge. It doesn't take much to make the Impala look racy, and this one looks just right. Bodywork is quite well done and shows of the crisply folded steel that makes the Imp so distinctive, and you can see in the photos that they put in the time to get it right. Gaps are good all around, the finish is nicely rendered in two-stage urethane, and it shows only a few signs of use since the work was completed. All the trim is in good condition, including the distinctive Impala-only side trim, along with the matching engine-turned panel surrounding the triple taillights, which were an Impala trademark since Day One. The glass offers a slight tint, which gives the old car a sleek look.
As a real code 14 V8 SS, the interior is an upscale place to do business, combining nicely restored buckets and a center console and it all looks fantastic. The carpets, door panels, and headliner were all upgraded at the same time, and the thin-rimmed steering wheel is traditional style for the '60s. The instruments have been joined by a trio auxiliary gauges underneath the dash along with the controls for the Air Ride suspension that allows individual adjustment of each corner. This is a factory power window car and they all remain fully functional, and a Kenwood AM/FM/CD/iPod radio head unit has been fitted in the dash. And this car offers what might be the tidiest old car trunk we've seen lately, neatly fitted with black carpets and a full-sized spare.
The Impala was available with a variety of V8 engines, and the great thing about the Chevy small block is that they all look alike. As a result, the 350 cubic inch V8 looks right at home in the '64 engine bay. Chevy Orange paint certainly helps, and there are a few dress-up items such as the aluminum valve covers with matching air cleaner. It isn't radical, but it's been properly upgraded with an aluminum radiator, alternator, and dual reservoir master cylinder with power assist for the 4-wheel disc brakes. Ram's horn exhaust manifolds help the original look under the hood, along with a recent exhaust system and glasspack-style mufflers that sound awesome. The transmission is a TH350 3-speed automatic, not an antique PowerGlide and with highway-friendly gears, this is a fantastic cruiser, local or long distance. Simple Intro wheels carry staggered 225/40/18 front and massive 255/35/20 rear performance radials.
Clean and ready to enjoy, this Impala easily cost way more than the asking price to build, and there aren't many that are cleaner. Classic looks, room for five, and great performance make it one of the icons of the 1960s, and it still attracts a ton of attention today. Call now!

The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu, having stared at the Impala across the showroom floor for a year, gets nips and tucks all over inspired by its larger brother. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder in the base car will get a stop-start system and 23 city miles per gallon, 35 highway, each number representing a one-mpg improvement over the 2013 car. Output is 196 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque.
Opt for the 2.0-liter turbo and, while power holds steady at 259 hp, torque goes up by 14 percent to a striking 295 lb-ft (a figure Chevy calls best in the class). The final details include newly programmed transmission shift points and faster shifts, for better engaging and enjoying the added power.
Looks-wise, the grille's been reshaped to be more in line with the new Chevrolet look, a narrower upper grille hovering over a larger lower grille.

When it comes to technology used in racecars, we generally expect it to trickle down to production cars, not the other way around. Well, Pratt & Miller has developed a new rear-facing radar that operates in a similar fashion to what we're used to in modern blind spot detection systems, only it is also capable of tracking cars as they approach and relaying vital information to the driver via a large display screen.
The innovative radar system debuted at last weekend's 12 Hours of Sebring for Corvette Racing, and this system makes perfect sense for endurance races like this since the cars sometimes have to drive through the night and in poor weather conditions.
The radar can detect cars even with poor visibility, and uses easy-to-distinguish symbols for the driver to identify.

Fifteen years ago, I wrote my first-ever automotive article under the name Murilee Martin, and it didn't take me long to start writing about one of my favorite automotive subjects: the junkyard. Before I'd refined my system for documenting discarded vehicles, however, I shot a lot of boneyard photos that never got used. For today's Junkyard Gem, I have four shots from early 2007 of one of the rarest turbocharged machines of the 1980s: the Chevrolet Turbo Sprint. The Chevrolet Sprint was really a rebadged Suzuki Cultus, from the pre-Geo era when General Motors sold the Isuzu Gemini as the Chevrolet Spectrum, the Daewoo LeMans as the Pontiac LeMans and the Toyota Corolla as the Chevrolet Nova (soon enough, the Spectrum became a Geo, and the Nova became the Prizm). The second-generation Cultus appeared in 1988, becoming the Geo Metro on our shores the following year. The Turbo Sprint was available for just the last two years of the Sprint's 1985-1988 American sales run, and it appears that just a couple of thousand were sold; if I'd known at the time just how rare they were, I'd have shot more photos of this one at the now-defunct Hayward Pick Your Part. The turbocharged 993cc three-cylinder produced 70 horsepower, 22 better than the naturally-aspirated version. Since the Turbo Sprint weighed just 1,620 pounds (that's about 500 pounds lighter than a barely more powerful '22 Mitsusbishi Mirage), it was plenty of fun to drive. For 1988, the regular Sprint hatchback cost $6,380 while the Turbo Sprint listed at $8,240 (that's about $15,375 and $19,855 today, respectively). Believe it or not, a Turbo Sprint actually raced in the 24 Hours of Lemons 10 years ago, though it didn't end well. This ad is for the regular Cultus, not the Cultus Turbo, but the screaming guitars sound reasonably turbocharged. For the most part, Chevy Sprint marketing was all about cheap purchase price and stingy fuel economy… at a time when gasoline prices were cratering. Related Video:
