58 Bel Air Impala Hardtop 348 Ci. Tri-power Driver V8 Auto Vintage Gm (45pics) on 2040-cars
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
OVERVIEW: This 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air Impala 2-door Hardtop Sport Coupe is equipped with a 348 ci. V8 engine, triple carburetors, and automatic transmission. Options include power steering, power brakes, and posi-track rear end. Odometer reading is 58,746 miles. The firewall data tag provides the following info: Style 58-1847, Body #K-8416, Trim #847, Paint #938A. Serial # F58K-172748.
The present senior owner acquired the car in its current condition about 4 years ago from the Imperial Palace (the Quad) collection in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This popular hardtop has a couple of custom aspects to it, a ’58 Buick grille, ’57-58 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer wheel covers, and lowered suspension. The original grille, hubcaps, and front coil springs will all come with the car so it can easily be put back to stock configuration if so desired.
DRIVETRAIN: The engine is believed to be the original 348 ci. V8 that originally came with the car, however, we have not checked numbers and therefore can not guarantee it, but have no reason to doubt it. The engine starts easily. There are a few seconds of lifter tick upon start up, and a slight puff of blue on start up only. Beyond that it runs smooth and quiet and does not smoke. It could be that it requires a good run seeing as it has not been driven much over the last few years.
The engine compartment is basically clean and tidy, but does show the dust of a couple of outings and storage. A detailing would easily enhance its appearance.
There are no signs of oil leaks or seeping, it does not leave drips on the floor when parked.
CHASSIS & UNDERCARRIAGE: The chassis components appear as original equipment, other than coil springs changed to lower the ride. The car is equipped with power steering and brakes.
The way this car presents on the underside is that the original frame and undercarriage were undercoated. Closer scrutiny of this did not uncover any hidden horrors, or that it was necessarily done to hide anything other than surface rust and road dirt. It simply was done without much prep or finesse, and therefore does not appear tidy, and actually just looks scarier than it really is. The frame, floor pans, inner rockers, body mounts and braces all appear to be genuinely solid without any rust out or such problems.
The drop down panels, between the trunk pan and lower rear quarters, also appear solid, with no rot or signs of poor repair. There is only one spot where the metal appears soft and there could be a small rust hole, it is at the tail end of the passenger side inner rocker. A repair here would only require a small patch. The tires are a matched set of Coker Classic P205/75-R14 wide whitewall radials in excellent condition with plenty of tread left, mounted on original 14” stock rims. The spare is a non-matching wide white bias ply with excellent tread remaining.
BODY & PAINT: The body appears to be very solid, clean, and straight. There are no signs or evidence of rust or rot, blisters, body filler, collision damage, or inferior repairs.
As mentioned before, the floor pans and body mounts all appear solid, as does the trunk pan.
The bottoms of the doors and underside of the trunk lid are clean and solid.
The paint job appears to have been laid down nicely and done in single stage paint. The bad points in the paint are the hood and trunk lid, which have extensive crazing on them, but these issues do not really show in the photos or from a distance. This problem is limited to the hood and trunk lid, and does not appear on the roof or sides of the car. Those areas actually have a very smooth finish and nice shine.
INTERIOR: The interior is very nice! This car has a complete new interior done in correct original patterns and colors.
The original steering wheel is in good condition with only a couple of very minor and small stress cracks appearing.
It has a Wonderbar radio in working condition. Condition of clock is unknown. Next to it there is a Front/Rear Speaker control switch. Glove box door sports a Positraction emblem.
All bright trim in the interior is nice and ranges from very good to excellent condition. There are a couple of small dings on the lower stainless molding of the left door. Garnish moldings are painted body color.
The right door panel is missing its red courtesy light lens, possibly it’s fallen into the door.
The trunk contains a new correct molded rubber trunk mat, and the cardboard liner panel is new also.
There are new glass and window seals throughout. New division channel seals, vent window seals, quarter window seals, and new glass sweepers were installed. The shaded windshield is in good condition, as are the door and quarter windows. All side windows roll up and down smoothly. It is equipped with a windshield washer.
BRIGHTWORK: All stainless and chrome on the car is either new, restored and polished, re-chromed, or very good to excellent original. It is optioned with dual door mirrors.
All side trim moldings, roof line stainless, and front & rear glass surrounds are in very nice condition. There is one small ding at the left rear corner, minor.
Nice front fender gun sights. The chrome pot metal hood bar is very nice but does show a small amount of miniscule pitting, it’s not bad.
SUMMARY: In short, this is a nice cosmetic restoration of a solid original car. This striking ’58 first year Impala is ready to cruise around town and to your local show & shine.
If you are considering a classic late 50’s north American Chevy hardtop, then this could be it! The body lines and styling of this car make it a distinguished collectible that continues to gain in popularity at a steady pace. Add to that the desirability of 348 ci. TriPower, and you’ve got a crowd pleaser. The years of life are stacking up, and with diminishing eyesight, the owner is no longer able to enjoy or maintain his cars in the manner he’d like, so he has decided to disperse his collection.

What we know, and think we know, about the 2016 Chevy Volt
Wed, Aug 13 2014With the next-gen Chevy Volt due to make an appearance at the Detroit Auto Show early next year, bits and pieces about the new car are making their way into the press. Perhaps most importantly, the new Volt is going to have better "fuel economy and efficiency," according to GM executive vice president Mark Reuss. The current Volt gets 98 MPGe and 37 miles per gallon on premium fuel. It also has a 38-mile electric-only range. We don't know how GM will improve the efficiency or to what degree, but the logical options include making the car lighter, giving it better aerodynamics and/or improving the powertrain. To that end, one of the big things we don't know for sure includes information on the new gas-powered engine. Forbes says it will be a downsized 1.0-liter, three-cylinder mill instead of the 1.4-liter, four-cylinder used in the current model, which could certainly help the car be more efficient. The new Volt is also going to have more technology, which shouldn't surprise anyone. GM is now openly talking about how it will change the way it markets the Volt, shifting away from the mass-market mentality to focus on the regions where the car is already popular. "There's a Northeast and West Coast market for Volt, and there's nothing wrong with that," Chevy chief marketing officer Tim Mahoney told Forbes. There are rumors that the new Volt will have seating for five by adding a seat in the back. This is something a lot of current Volt owners would love, but we've heard nothing official hinting that this would be the case. We expect the battery to be the new 17.1-kWh version, or maybe even have a capacity increase, so GM would have to seriously repackage the pack to eliminate the ridge that runs from between the front seats and then back to the rear two seats. If you've heard anything official, do let us know.
Mustang, Camaro, Challenger gallop onto USPS pony car postage stamp set
Tue, Jul 19 2022Some of America's most iconic cars are about to be immortalized on postage stamps. A new set by the U.S. Postal Service will celebrate the the golden era of pony cars, featuring five classic examples of Detroit iron. Each one is beautifully illustrated in oil-on-canvas style, with subjects in motion and sunlight glinting off the chrome, and would add a nice touch to any first-class letter. The pony car segment was all about (relatively) small, sporty alternatives to the full-size land yachts of the 1960s. They typically came equipped with 6-cylinder engines or small-block V8s. The category was named after the Ford Mustang, hence the name. Some, though, argue that the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched a couple of weeks before the Mustang, is the first. Luckily, the Falcon-based Mustang's distinct styling generated a sales sensation, or we might be calling them fish cars. Appropriately, one of the featured cars is a Mustang. But it's not just any Mustang. The 1969 Boss 302, seen here resplendent in Bright Yellow, was created for the hotly-contested SCCA Trans-Am racing series. One of its main rivals would have been the 1969 Chevy Camaro Z/28, also created specifically for the series, and is included in the set in Fathom Green. Representing Auburn Hills in the set is a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T in Plum Crazy, while Southfield's American Motors gets a nod with an AMC Javelin in Big Bad Orange. The Mustang's platform cousin, a 1967 Mercury Cougar XR-7, is portrayed in a gorgeous Burgundy Poly that almost looks incomplete without Neko Case on the hood. It's not the first time the USPS has honored America's rich car culture on its stamps. In 2013, it issues a series of muscle car stamps with the help of Richard Petty. That set featured a 1966 Pontiac GTO, 1967 Shelby GT-500, 1970 Chevelle SS, 1970 Plymouth Hemi ’Cuda and, of course, a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. Another set in 2016 featured classic pickup trucks. Going further back, a 2008 release had chroed and finned automobiles of the 1950s and a 2005 release featured sporty American cars of the same era. The pony car stamps will debut on August 25 at the Great American Stamp Show in Sacramento, California in partnership with the American Philatelic Society. The public is free to attend the dedication ceremony, but you must RSVP first. After that, they will be available at local post offices and on line at the USPS store.
GM already raising prices on 2014 Silverado and Sierra pickups
Mon, 14 Oct 2013General Motors must be pretty pleased with sales of its two newest pickups, the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado, as it's announced price hikes for both models, as part of a planned price tweak.
Prices will be bumped by as much as $1,500, although weirdly, they'll be offset by as much as $1,500 in cash-back offers through the end of October. Fox Business reports that GM spokesman Jim Cain said of the price hike, "With the sell down of the '13 models nearly complete, this price adjustment was planned and is a normal part of business."
The move, as Fox is quick to point out, is an interesting one, as sales of the twin pickups struggled last month relative to the Ford F-Series, while both of GM's crosstown competitors have been aggressively undercutting Silverado and Sierra prices. The F-150 starts at $24,070 and the Ram 1500 comes in at $23,600, not counting any cash on the hood. A base Silverado, meanwhile, retails at $25,575.
