1959 Impala Convertible
It
doesn’t get much better than a 1959 Impala convertible. When you take a car that is already that
cool, and ad big brakes, billet wheels, adjustable air suspension, and tons of
drivetrain upgrades, you end up with the baddest ride on the block!
This car
was just completed and has had a very extensive restoration. Every nut bolt and screw has been replaced
and no expense was spared.
1959
Impala convertibles are some of the most desirable and sought after classic
cars on the market. They have soared in
value and demand over the past 10 years.
Prices have done nothing but increase and will continue to do so in the
future. As the entire collector car
market is booming, the value of most all models is rising. The most in demand cars are appreciating the
most, and its no secret that 59 verts are in demand! There is always going to be a market for these
cars, and a high caliber examples are going to be strong in the market for many
years to come.
This car
started as a nice clean car that was restored a few years back. It had the
original drivetrain and a lot of original parts on it. I had planned to do air ride, big brakes, upgrade
the drive train, steering, and a few other minor changes. One thing led to next, and as usually, my
already restored “quick build project” snow balled into what you see today. It took lots and lots of time and money to
take the car to the next level, but the end result were worth it! If you consider the price of 59 convertible
with an just average driver restoration being over $70k these days, then
factory in all the suspension, steering, brake, and drivetrain upgrades, and
then factor in all the detailed restoration work in the engine compartment,
underside, and all the trim and plating, etc etc etc, it gets expensive quick! Doing a 59 to the
level that this car has been done to is not a cheap or easy task.
The car
has about 100 shake down miles on it and that’s it. I was going to drive and show the car this
season but figured I would let it go while it is still fresh and everything is brand
new. Someone will get the enjoyment of
a fresh complete nut and bolt restoration, without all the headache, hassle,
and time it takes to get a car to this point.
The
interior of the car is all brand new and look incredible. The seats, carpet, door panels, visors, top
boot, etc. have just been replaced. The
dash and other painted trim parts were refinished. The original gauges were sent out to a gauge
restoration specialist and completely restored. All the gauges function just as
they should, even the clock works! The
bezels were replated, lenses replaced, and all internals rebuilt. The steering wheel was refinished. The aluminum seat trim was restored. The
stainless on the door panels was restored. The rear speaker grill was redone,
the bezel was replated, emblem replaced, and surround was repainted. The convertible top latches were
replated. The window cranks, door
handles, and ash trays were all replaced.
The radio bezel was replated. The
convertible top has been replaced and is white in color. The power top motor and switch are new.
There is
lots of trim on a 59 and they don’t reproduce much of any of it. Restoring the brightwork is a huge task in
itself. Every single piece of trim on the outside of this car has been redone. Every piece of stainless and aluminum was sent
out and straightened and polished. Every
piece of chrome on the outside was replaced or replated. The grill was professionally straightened and
then sent out to be plated and looks incredible. Chrome bumper bullets were
added to the overrider. All the emblems,
door handles, and mirrors were replaced.
The
paint and body was also just completed and look great! The car is super slick. Its nice and straight don’t the sides. It was painted using al DuPont products. It was professionally done and has been wet
sanded and polished to a mirror finish.
The car was done in the brightest white you can get, and the stripe on
the quarter was done in corvette red. It
really pops in the sun!
Underneath
the hood of this 59 is very detailed.
Many hours were spent getting it to look as good as it does. The firewall was completely stripped and
repainted. Every part was blasted and
refinished. The heater box was removed
and restored. The inner fenderwells were
blasted, repaired, and finished in gloss black on the outside and satin black
on the inside. The radiator support was
blasted and painted gloss black. A brand
new GM Performance 300hp Crate motor was ordered. It was sprayed corvette red along with an
original set of script valve covers that were restored. A Billet Specialties serpentine setup was
used. It has ceramic coated headers, a polished intake, and a Edeldbrock
polished carb. A billet HEI distributor
and Taylor wires were added. The motor is cooled by a BeCool pro street series
fan and radiator package ($1500 setup) and stays cool in any temperatures. The custom one off air cleaner was hand
built. You will see in the photos that
there are 2 different air cleaners. The
buyer will have there choice of which one they want on the car.
The
transmission is a fresh 700r4 overdrive that shifts great. The car runs awesome! It has plenty of power but is still nice and
smooth. It starts easy and idles smooth.
The rear
end is a complete bolt in 12 bolt unit form Strange Engineering. It features a 3:55 gear with Mosier axles.
It
breaths through a stainless exhausts system with polished mufflers.
The car
has a 4 wheel big brake setup and stops on a dime! It has c6 z06 14” rotors in front with c5 z06
calipers. The rear has a 12” rotor and
matching z06 calipers. They use genuine GM parts. They are powered by a Wilwood
master cylinder with an adjustable proportioning valve.
The car gets it aggressive stance from a fully adjustable digital air
ride suspension. This is not a cheap air ride kit. It has been
professionally installed and everything was done nice and clean. It
is has an Accuair digital ride height controller and can be adjusted on all 4
corners. All the air ride components are neatly mounted in the truck and
tucked out of the way. It has tubular upper and lower control arms that
look killer and also help improve the ride and handling. It has Ridetech Fox
shocks All the suspensions components are new.
The wheels and tires are new as well. They are 20x8.5s in the front and 22x10s in
the rear. They are 2 piece billets that
were custom built by Esajian Wheel (www.esajianwheel.com) and fit the car
perfect!
The underside of the car is nicely detailed. The frame was striped, cleaned, and painted
gloss black. The floors were sprayed with 3M Shutz coating, which is very
durable and looks nice and clean. The tubular control arms are powder coated
black. All the steering parts were
removed, stripped, repainted, and re installed with new hardware. The rear end parts had the same
treatment. The fuel tank is new.
If your
in the market for a 59 convertible, this fine example would be a great choice
for an investment that you can enjoy.
This car has been very tastefully modified, without taking away from the
originality of the car. Its been setup
to drive and perform, but still retains a lot of originality. While there are
many resto mod cars out there with very modern interior and paint schemes
fetching big bucks, these will be the same cars that will be dated and out of
style as fads in the car world change.
This Impala was done with long term investment in mind. It will never go out of style and will always
be as cool as it is today. If 10 years
from now you wanted a completely original car, you could reinstall the factory
suspension, brakes, throw on some wide whites and make a few minor changes and
have a very stock and original looking car (the new owner will have option to
take the original parts if they choose).
These
cars don’t come available that often. I
can remember the last time I saw 59 that was this clean and had all the
upgrades that this car has. If you’re a serious
buyer, contact me, this car can be yours today!
There

Volkswagen and Ram need to make room on the diesel-emissions bench for General Motors. America's largest automaker was accused in a lawsuit on Thursday of rigging hundreds of thousands of diesel trucks with at least three so-called defeat devices to ensure that the trucks would meet federal and state emission standards, even if they generated more pollution in real-world driving. According to the complaint, on-road emissions testing conducted for the plaintiffs found that Duramax-equipped trucks produced NOx pollutants, comprised of nitrogen and oxygen atoms, two to five times higher than legally permitted, and "many times" higher than their gasoline counterparts. The proposed class-action lawsuit was filed in federal court in Detroit on behalf of people who own or lease more than 705,000 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks fitted with "Duramax" engines from 2011 to 2016 model years. The lawsuit seeks remedies including possible refunds or restitution for lost vehicle value, plus punitive damages. It adds to legal problems for Detroit-based GM, which has already paid about $2.5 billion in penalties and settlements over faulty ignition switches linked to 124 deaths. GM joins at least five automakers whose diesel emissions have been scrutinized by regulators or consumers. They include VW, which has admitted to cheating; Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler; Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Peugeot and Renault. GM spokesman Dan Flores called the claims "baseless," and said the trucks comply with US Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards and California's own tough standards. Shares of GM were down 69 cents, or 2.1 percent, at $32.50 in afternoon trading, after earlier falling to $31.93. The GM lawsuit was filed by several law firms, including Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro, which helped reach multibillion-dollar settlements with VW on behalf of drivers and dealers. The case is Fenner et al v General Motors LLC et al, US District Court, Eastern District of Michigan, No. 17-11661. The named plaintiffs are Andrei Fenner of Mountain View, California and Joshua Herman of Sulphur, Louisiana. They said they would not have bought their respective 2011 Sierra and 2016 Silverado trucks, or would have paid less for them, had they known about the alleged rigging. Joseph Spak, an RBC Capital Markets analyst, in a research report said "negative publicity" from the lawsuit could drive buyers to trucks from Ford or even Fiat Chrysler's Ram.

Christmas is only a week away. The New Year is just around the corner. As 2014 draws to a close, I'm not the only one taking stock of the year that's we're almost shut of. Depending on who you are or what you do, the end of the year can bring to mind tax bills, school semesters or scheduling dental appointments. For me, for the last eight or nine years, at least a small part of this transitory time is occupied with recalling the cars I've driven over the preceding 12 months. Since I started writing about and reviewing cars in 2006, I've done an uneven job of tracking every vehicle I've been in, each year. Last year I made a resolution to be better about it, and the result is a spreadsheet with model names, dates, notes and some basic facts and figures. Armed with this basic data and a yen for year-end stories, I figured it would be interesting to parse the figures and quantify my year in cars in a way I'd never done before. The results are, well, they're a little bizarre, honestly. And I think they'll affect how I approach this gig in 2015. {C} My tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015 it'll be as high as 73. Let me give you a tiny bit of background about how automotive journalists typically get cars to test. There are basically two pools of vehicles I drive on a regular basis: media fleet vehicles and those available on "first drive" programs. The latter group is pretty self-explanatory. Journalists are gathered in one location (sometimes local, sometimes far-flung) with a new model(s), there's usually a day of driving, then we report back to you with our impressions. Media fleet vehicles are different. These are distributed to publications and individual journalists far and wide, and the test period goes from a few days to a week or more. Whereas first drives almost always result in a piece of review content, fleet loans only sometimes do. Other times they serve to give context about brands, segments, technology and the like, to editors and writers. So, adding up the loans I've had out of the press fleet and things I've driven at events, my tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015, it'll be as high as 73. At one of the buff books like Car and Driver or Motor Trend, reviewers might rotate through five cars a week, or more. I know that number sounds high, but as best I can tell, it's pretty average for the full-time professionals in this business.

Nearly every major automaker reported weak U.S. sales for March and the first quarter of 2019, citing a rough start to the year, but said a robust economy and strong labor market should encourage consumers to buy more vehicles as 2019 rolls on. GM, which no longer releases monthly sales figures, saw first-quarter sales fall 7 percent, with declines across all brands. Sales of Silverado pickup trucks fell nearly 16 percent and the high-margin Chevy Suburban large SUV dropped 25 percent. Ford also no longer releases monthly sales numbers, but is due to release its first-quarter sales figures on Thursday. According to industry data, Ford's sales fell 2 percent in the quarter and 5 percent in March. Ford representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. FCA reported a 7 percent fall in U.S. sales in March and a 3 percent drop for the first quarter. All of FCA's brands dropped in March, except for Ram, which saw a 15 percent increase in pickup truck sales. "The industry had a tough first quarter, but with spring finally starting to show its face and continued strong economic indicators ... we are confident that new vehicle sales demand will strengthen going forward," FCA's U.S. head of sales, Reid Bigland, said in a statement. Toyota reported a 3.5 percent fall in U.S. sales in March and 5 percent for the first quarter, hurt by declining demand for its Corolla sedans and Camry vehicles. "While some of our competitors are abandoning sedans, we remain optimistic about the future of the segment," Toyota said in a statement. Nissan posted a 5.3 percent drop in sales in March, and its first-quarter sales were down 11.6 percent. Honda and Hyundai bucked the trend. Honda's U.S. sales rose 4.3 percent in March and 2 percent in the quarter, while Hyundai's were up 1.7 percent and 2.1 percent, respectively. Passenger-car sales suffered throughout the January-March quarter compared with the same period in 2018 as Americans continued to abandon them in favor of larger, more comfortable pickup trucks and SUVs, which are far more profitable for automakers. The battle for market share in the particularly lucrative large-pickup truck market intensified in the quarter, as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Ram brand outsold the U.S.' No. 1 automaker General Motors' Chevrolet-brand trucks. The two automakers have both launched redesigned pickup trucks.
