For the most part this is an unmolested, garden-variety 1980 El Camino with the Conquista appearance package (two-tone paint and trim).  It does have AC (which worked the last time I drove it), and tilt steering.  It came with the original AM radio, which I replaced with an era-appropriate AM/FM unit (though it still plays out of the single dash speaker).

I'm the third owner of this El Camino; I acquired it from my wife's aunt and uncle 5-6 years ago.  They bought it from the original owner @ 1981, so for the most part it belonged to my wife's relatives for most of its existence.  My wife's aunt drove the vehicle for many years, but eventually they moved to the country, and other than using the El Camino as a field vehicle for feeding cows it didn't get a lot of use.  Eventually they parked it in a barn, remembering I'd told them at one point that if they ever wanted to get rid of it to let me know.  I acquired it, and did my best to get it roadworthy, but realistically I couldn't drive it frequently enough to keep things up.  I put new tires on it, as well as an alternator, shocks, muffler, etc., and had a mechanic go through it several years ago; but the last time I drove it (several years back) the brakes went out, so it has been parked since.  I don't have the assistance I'd need to get the brakes back into working shape, and living on a steep hill I can't do much to get it out of the garage safely to tinker with it, so I put it on a set of rollers (which transfer with the vehicle), moved it to the far edge of the garage, and as you can see if has become a storage rack for the most part.

Having been used as a field car the vehicle does have some dents here and there, but in general it's in solid shape.  The only rust of any real consequence that I'm aware of is around the rear glass (pictured), which seems to be contained to that one single piece of sheet metal at the front of the bed.  I suspect someone with better body shop skills than myself could either fill those in, or replace that one panel and be set.  The vehicle does leak rain water around the front glass (and through the rust spots in the rear), which has been the case since well before I acquired the vehicle.  As a result my wife's family kept the car covered once the leaks began (either in a carport or barn, and I've kept it in the garage since I've had it), which has helped preserve the interior, especially the dash which as you can see from the photos has no cracks.  As best I remember all the glass is good.  Interior-wise other than the seat cover needing replacing, the carpet on the doors and the headliner have lost most of their color and would eventually need to be replaced.

As it sits currently I'd say it isn't driveable and would need to be trailered.  The brake problem may simply be a master cylinder, or there could be a leak in a line somewhere.  Neither would be an expensive fix by any means, but as a result of sitting for several years the vehicle also leaks oil and transmission fluid, so while I suspect I could charge the battery and top off the oil and get it started with no problems, I would not advise trying to move it under its own power until it were moved to a level lot somewhere.  If you wanted to make it a daily driver, it would need attention to the brakes, and to the various seals that would need to be replaced to stop the oil/transmission leaks.  But realistically with those items repaired the vehicle would be operable.

My ultimate goal was to get the mechanicals sorted out and then move on to body work and paint, but realistically with my day-to-day routine I couldn't drive a vehicle of this vintage as my daily driver (plus it really doesn't provide me enough leg room to get comfortable), so I never got beyond some of the primarily mechanical stuff.  I could tackle the brakes, but realistically I have too many other home projects that are taking priority, and in a house with no attic or basement storage, garage space is at a premium, and we honestly need the space more than we need the wheels.

I'd rather see this vehicle sell to someone who plans to fix it up and drive it, as I think it's well above being just a parts vehicle.  That's the primary reason I'm listing it here versus simply calling a charity to come haul it off, since I'd like to give someone a chance at it who would want to get it back on the road.  I'm not in an immediate rush to get rid of it, but I think I've put things off about as long as I can.  It could definitely use some body work and paint, but if you're looking for a work vehicle and are mechanically inclined this could be a good option.  Parts for the 229 V-6 are cheap and plentiful from what I've encountered, and I've gotten as good as 18 MPG on the highway, so compared to full-sized trucks of this vintage this El Camino can get decent mileage.

I should probably clarify in the photos where there are two El Caminos, the one in the foreground (with beauty rings and center caps) is mine that is for sale.  The one in the background belonged to a guy who happened to park in my same lot at work one summer, so we got together one day and parked them side-by-side just to take some photos since they were so similar.  So just to be clear, this auction is for only one El Camino; those were the only fairly recent pictures I could find of it outside to post.

Porsche, Jaguar continue dominance in 2015 JD Power APEAL study

Wed, Jul 22 2015

The top of JD Power's 2015 APEAL Study has not changed much in the last year. Porsche remains No. 1 with Jaguar nipping at its heels, although both premium brands saw their overall score fall compared to 2014. For those that need a refresher, the APEAL Study looks at how "gratifying" a vehicle is to own and drive, rating cars and brands on a 1,000-point scale. The industry average for 2015 has increased from 794 to 798, while the total number of automakers that finished above the curve increased from 16 to 20. While Porsche and Jaguar finished at the top, their scores dropped eight and seven points, respectively, to 874 and 855. The top "non-premium" brand was Mini, which scored an impressive 825, up from 795. If the BMW-owned British marque is still a bit too premium for your tastes, last year's non-premium winner, Hyundai, did climb five points and is this year's runner up. At the opposite end of the scale, Smart sits at the very bottom of the rankings, with a score of 683 (it didn't appear on the 2014 rankings). Fiat also dropped, from fourth worst in 2014 to second worst in 2015, despite the 500 being named most appealing city car. Subaru made an impressive climb, from third worst to seventh, falling just 10 points shy of the industry average and two points south of the non-premium average. In the individual vehicle segments, eight brands earned multiple awards, with Ford, Chevrolet, and Porsche earning three apiece. Surprise segment victories included the new Ford Expedition, which beat out Chevy's popular Suburban. The Infiniti QX80 bested the likes of the Cadillac Escalade and Range Rover for best large luxury SUV, and the Dodge Challenger beat its muscle car rivals from Ford and Chevy. Most of the victories, though, were quite predictable. The Mazda6 and CX-5 took wins for the midsize sedan and compact SUV categories respectively, while the Volkswagen Golf captured the compact car win. The Ford F-150 won the large pickup category, while the Porsche Cayman was named most appealing compact premium sporty car. Corvette Stolen In Detroit Returned To Owner After 33 Years

Wed, Jun 25 2014

A Detroit man had his stolen Corvette returned 33 years after it disappeared while parked on one of Detroit's main drags, according to ABC 7. The last time George Talley saw his 1979 Corvette was on a July day in 1981, when it disappeared from its parking spot on Jefferson Avenue in Detroit. He had given up hope of ever seeing his car again, until a phone call from AAA brought his sporty ride home. Authorities had come across a Corvette with a questionable VIN in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. When they ran the number Talley's stolen car report came up. The car is still in pretty good shape and only has 47,000 miles on the odometer. Talley wasn't sure how he could get the car back home, but General Motors stepped in and agreed to cover the cost of bringing the 'Vette home. Talley has always had a passion for Detroit-made muscle cars. "I've always liked Corvettes. It was attractive. The ladies like 'em," Talley told ABC 7.

Chevy Volt replacement battery cost varies wildly, up to $34,000

Fri, Jan 10 2014

There's a growing hubbub in the plug-in vehicle community over what looks like some ridiculously cheap replacement batteries for the Chevrolet Volt going up for sale. GM Parts Online, for example, is selling a replacement Volt battery with an MSRP of $2,994.64 but, with an online discount, the price comes down to $2,305.88. For the 16-kWh pack in the 2012 Volt, that comes to a very low $144.11 per kilowatt hour (kWH). But is it a real deal? How can it be, when a Chevy dealer may quote you a price of up to $34,000 to replace the pack? For a 16-kWh Volt pack, $2,305.88 comes to a very low $144.11 per kWh. But is it a real deal? Battery packs in alternative propulsion vehicles are usually priced by the kWh and, historically, they've been thought to be in the range of $500-per-kWh for OEM offerings. Since automakers are understandably secretive about their costs, we still don't know what the real number is today, but we do know it varies by automaker. Tesla, for example, has said it pays less than $200-per-kWH at the cell level but, of course, a constructed pack would be more. Whatever is going on, li-ion battery prices are trending downward. So, $144.11 certainly sounds great, but what's the story here? Kevin Kelly, manager of electrification technology communications for General Motors, reminded AutoblogGreen that GM Parts Online is not the official GM parts website and that, "the costs indicated on the site are not what we would charge our dealers or owners for a replacement battery. There would be no cost to the Volt owner if their battery needs replacement or repair while the battery is under the eight year/100,000 mile limited warranty coverage provided by Chevrolet." A single price tag also can't be accurate for everyone, Kelly said. "If the customer needs to have their battery repaired beyond the warranty, the cost to them would vary depending on what needs to be replaced or repaired (i.e. number of modules, which specific internal components need replacement, etc.)." he said. "So, it's hard for us to tell you exactly what the cost would be to the customer because it varies depending on what might need to be repaired/replaced. As a result, the core charge would vary." But, is the $2,300 price even accurate for anyone? Thanks to a reader comment, we see that this similar item on New GM Parts makes it look like the lithium-ion modules that Kelly mentioned – where a lot of the expensive bits are – are not included.
