1964 CHEVROLET CORVAIRMONZA 2 DOOR COUPE. This is a 110 HP Monza 4 speed with Air Conditioning.

The 1964 Corvair Monza is one of the favorite iconic American cars. It is the best of the of the early first generation Corvair designs. The ’64 Vairs were equipped with the larger and more desirable power train. This included the flat 6 engines increase to 164 CI (2.7L) while the ’60-’63 engines were only 140 CI (2.3L). It is also the first year for the 110 HP dual carb engine. The 1964 included an improved cooling fan design by going to a light magnesium alloy. The mag fan reduced the mass significantly and reduced the strain on the drive belt and improved engine response as there was less inertia to overcome during acceleration. Another important upgrade on the ’64 model was the addition of a transverse leaf spring in the rear suspension. When combined with the rear coil springs it reduced suspension droop / jacking effect that was prevalent on semi-trailing arm / swing axle suspensions. This modification made the car more stable in high speed corners. Call it an “Anti-Nader spring. Ralph Nader (former Congressman) went after GM and the Corvair in his work of Fiction “Unsafe at Any Speed”. Nader has been vilified in the Corvair Hobby and rightfully so. The front sway bar was also increased to 3/4 ” from 5/8” diameter for improved roll stiffness. These key additions made the Corvair a true world class handling machine. Not even the “bath tub” Porsches of the era could keep up with a properly equipped High Horse power Corvair. Imagine if GM continued to develop the Corvair into the next decade maybe there would not have been a bail out.The Faster and Better handling ’64 model was also equipped with an improved braking system. Although remaining a single circuit system the rear brake drums were now finned for improved braking efficiency. Note this car has been upgraded to dual circuit master cylinder from a later model 1967 vehicle. The ’64 GM design 4 speed transmission was more durable as it was equipped with beefier synchros. The change to closer gear ratios made for an improved driving experience and kept the engine in the power band during high engine speed shifts. Bottom line the 1964 Corvair was the most refined Corvair yet. Combined with its classic styling it makes for the perfect entry level collectible.

Power Train & Drive Train: The engine and drive train are the best features of the car. There are no funny noises or knocking sounds. This engine runs smooth. The car can cruise at 70-80 mph no problem. Remember on Texas Hwy 130 the speed limit is 80 mph “Only in Texas”. The transmission shifts great and the clutch is new and is light and easy to manage in traffic. There is no clutch chatter and the take up during clutch release is smooth. All gearing going up or down provides for effortless shifts. There is no grinding and you can manage down shifts with heel and toe for proper rev matching. If you have not mastered the art of properly driving a 4 speed then push it into gear and the synchros will do their job. The shifter is tight and precise not quite to modern standards, but the shifting is smooth.

Suspension: The steering box is unique as it has fast ratio steering about 3.5 turns lock to lock. The on center feel is a little sloppy but is pretty typical for worm and sector steering of the era. There is no shimmy while driving just the typical light effort that is common on Corvairs. If you are hardcore and want precise steering then I would recommend a complete overhaul of the steering box by a competent machinist that can properly machine the pitman gear to the worm gear to achieve the proper lash. This usually requires significant dollars and there are only a handful guys in the country that can properly rebuild a steering box for track use. Try Global West Suspension they know their way around a worm and sector box. The suspension overall is in good condition. However, the rear spring has slight sag and could be re-arched to increase the curb height in the rear about 3/4" for a more level ride height. If you jounce the suspension the front rear shocks have good control.  The car tracks straight down the road. Tires: The car has fairly new 13” white wall stripe tires. They are in great shape with 80-90% tread depth. The spare is brand new, They are a regular passenger tire and perform very well for a 185-70-13 radial. The days of a large selection of high performance 13” rubber are long gone so you get what you get and don’t throw a fit.

Brakes: The brakes were recently serviced including a dual circuit master cylinder, wheel cylinders and flex lines. The linings are fresh and the car stops straight without any pull. The brake effort is very good for a manual drum car. However, you can’t compare this to a car with a modern braking system and should not expect it to perform like one.

Body / Chassis: The body is in good shape with no rust through present, although there is some surface rust in some areas where the paint is chipped. There is some surface rust on the chassis; it comes off with a wire wheel. There is no rust through corrosion. There does not appear to be any bondo or filler on the car. However, I can not confirm it. The chassis is very straight and the car does not dog track. There are no replacement panels that I could tell. The rear quarter panels have the same date code.  The floors are in great shape and are solid. The floors have been painted with POR 15 to keep corrosion out.

Exterior: This where she will need attention. The paint is in poor shape. It is the correct shade of Ermine White. The vehicle has had a repaint the prep work is poor as there is overspray in areas that could have been properly masked. There is overspray on some rubber seals in the doors. The paint is cracking in many areas. There are some dings here and there and paint has chipped on the door edges. There are some scratches present. If you are looking for a good driver and willing to paint the car you will be very pleased. If you want some detail pics of these areas just ask and I can forward additional pics. Overall it is a 15 footer. If you want show paint sorry you’ll have to strip her down and start all over as the car was painted over the original paint at one time. A good paint job by a competent shop will actually be more than the reserve on the car. However, a decent driver grade re-spray will set you back maybe a G or so. The Bright work is in good shape, although not perfect. A buffing wheel with rouge on the stainless would bring it back to life. The bumpers have their share of parking lot spats but are presentable. There are a couple of small dings present The bright trim around the lights is presentable but will need attention if you are looking for perfection. Like I said it is a 10-15 footer. The door and window felts are also worn and deteriorated and should be replaced. The original GM glass is in good shape. The windshield is peppered from 50 years of road use. It could use a polish, but not really necessary unless you desire crystal clear glass. The front hood Corvair script is loose but spares are included. the drivers side rear faux vent is missing but a replacement is being located.

Interior: Overall in good shape. The interior has been reworked, utilizing the original style seat covers from Clarks. The ’63-64 has a dark red color. The seating surfaces are in great shape. The front door panels and arm rest pads have been replaced and are very nice. The rear panels are original and the card board is warped, but Clarks has excellent replacements. The interior bright work is nice but will need attention to make it perfect. However, it is good driver grade. Look to California Corvairs as they have many of these parts that they re-chrome.

Electrical: Fully functioning. The car stereo has been upgraded to a high end audio system. The head unit is a Retro Sound system. Looks pretty close to factory, but it is digital for new media formats. The Orion amp is a 600 W 4 channel unit. With 6 Rockford Fosgate speakers including two subs. These are enclosed in custom enclosures. The system was professionally installed and the original wiring is intact. This is a $1500 system. It will knock your socks off. All the gauges work. The gauge face trim is nice, but not perfect The speedo works fine and registers properly. The head lights high and low beam work. All turn signals, running and tail lights work and but the turn single cancel dose not works The back up lights work. The AC system is an modern Clarks aftermarket system. This is a very nice setup using 134 refrigerant. This is a great addition for those Hot Summer months. This is a $1700 setup.

Overview: I would feel comfortable driving this car on long trips or even cross country. The car is a gem to drive. If you want to fly in and drive it home that is your call, but I would not have a problem driving it any distance. With the modern upgrades the car is a great driver. All the upgrades to the vehicle were tasteful and truly enhance the driving enjoyment. All aspects of the car can be returned to stock. All she needs is paint to make a perfect driver. How real is the Chevy Bolt EV and will it really cost $30,000?

Tue, Jan 13 2015

"This is us bragging that we can do this kind of car." That's how Michael Simcoe, GM's executive director for NA exteriors, described the Chevy Bolt EV concept, which made a surprise appearance at the Detroit Auto Show today. While there was talk of a 2017 production debut, this is for sure a concept vehicle. But that means the ideas behind the vehicle are perhaps more important than the details. For example, no one is talking about what size battery might appear in a production Bolt, but Simcoe would talk about how rapid progress in battery improvements made it possible for GM to make the bold Bolt declaration that promises 200 miles and a price tag of around $30,000 (after incentives). But if the Bolt makes it to market, it won't be until 2017 (as rumored) or later, is it really fair to promote the car as being available with a federal tax credit? For one thing, credits for plug-in vehicles may change in the next few years, but if the laws stay the same, each manufacturer is limited to 200,000 vehicles before the credits start to decline. GM is justifiably proud that it's sold over 70,000 Volts thus far, but with a new model coming out later this year and a few years to go until the Bolt potentially arrives, GM could be pushing right up against that 200,000 limit when the Bolt goes on sale. But Volt executive chief engineer Pam Fletcher told AutoblogGreen that, "We're just trying to take some of the confusion out." "Think about talking to the average consumer," she said. "First, going through the explanation of how the federal tax credit was set up, how it's being used and so on. [In the industry, we] have the luxury of understanding the nuances of that regulation, but right now people who aren't in the marketplace, they don't have the luxury of all that. It's already hard to communicate the details so we gave them data in a way that is what they're used to seeing." There was one question that drove the two-year Bolt gestation and design period, Simcoe said: What does a better battery offer a vehicle designer? "We've got a number of spaces we play in for powertrain technology and obviously electrification is one of them," he said. "With Volt 1 and then the Spark EV, with that development and batteries getting better for us, we started doing some practical packaging to deliver a vehicle which was not the traditional aero form which you see around electric vehicles.

Recharge Wrap-up: Ford HQ gets giant solar array, Chevy City Express gets 24 MPG city

Sat, Aug 16 2014

Ford will be building Michigan's largest solar array at its Dearborn headquarters. With funding from DTE Energy, the solar carport will provide covered parking, as well 30 charging stations for electric vehicles. The array is expected to generate 1.13 million kWh per year for Ford's operations, and offset 794 metric tons of carbon emissions. Read more in the press release below. Chevrolet announced the fuel economy for the 2015 City Express, at 25 mpg combined. The cargo van is rated at 24 mpg in the city, and 26 mpg on the highway. Chevy credits the van's inline four-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission for its impressive city mileage. For its customers - which are mainly businesses - "The fuel economy of the City Express will help stretch their dollar at the pump and give them the flexibility to invest the savings back into their business," says Chevrolet's Ed Peper. The City Express starts at $22,950. Read more in the press release below. Engineers at the University of Wisconsin have developed an efficient engine that runs on a diesel-gas blend. The engine, which uses a computer to control the blend proportions, is about 15 percent more efficient than the any diesel engine according to mechanical engineering professor Rolf Reitz. The team has put the experimental reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) engine in a demonstration car - a 2009 Saturn. "This vehicle can do 50 miles per gallon," says Reitz, who believes the system could be improved further. Read more at Wisconsin Public Radio. The Southeast Alternative Fuel Conference and Expo will take place in October in Raleigh, North Carolina. Held at the NC Clean Energy Technology Center from October 22-24, the event will feature a variety of exhibitors, speakers and, most importantly, alternatively powered vehicles. "The three day conference will be a one-stop shop for fleet and transportation related decision makers to learn about return on investment, efficiency and alternative transportation fuels such as biodiesel, electricity, ethanol, propane and natural gas," says Anne Tazewell of the NC Clean Energy Technology Center. If you can't make it to Raleigh for the Expo, you can still enter to win a free two-year lease of a Nissan Leaf at the Center's website. Learn more about the event in the press release, below.

Amelia Island 2013: Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray from concepts to split windows

Wed, 13 Mar 2013

While this year marks 60 years of the Chevrolet Corvette, the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance focused on one of the coupe's most sought after models, the 1963 Sting Ray. General Motors design boss Ed Welburn was on hand to show off the all-new C7 Corvette, but even the hard-edged styling of the 2014 Stingray couldn't take away from the beautiful 1963 models sitting out on the field.
In addition to the original Sting Ray and the 1959 Sting Ray Concept, some of the other classic 'Vettes included "Big Tank" racecars, an interesting cutaway coupe, a right-hand-drive Z06 and the attention-grabbing 1963 Corvette Rondine by Pininfarina. Another impressive Corvette was the 1964 Corvette XP-819 rear-engine prototype. Owner Mike Yager had the car finished as a driving chassis for this year's show, but promises the car will be back to its original glory in time for next year's event.
