1961 Corvair Rampside Resto Mod – TURBO! The Ultimate Tailgater
Have you been to a tailgate party in a boring pick-up? A parade with people sitting on your convertible top? A car
show sitting in uncomfortable folding chairs in the dirt behind your car? A swap meet where you just want to sit
down and drink a beer? Well, this is your chance to change all of that! I hate to use the analogy, but like a
mullet, this Rampside is all business in the front and a PARTY in the back! You can take it to the park, the beach,
a NASCAR event, you could even take this camping and be the hit of the place!!! This is a unique opportunity to own
a rare Rampside that has been customized to be functional but very different.
I bought this ride 2 years ago with a vision to convert the essentially unusable pick-up bed into something cool.
The previous owner installed the 1967 Monza 180 HP Turbo motor, new wheels and tires, the Air Ride system, and
boxed the front A arms for additional strength. The new motor makes it surprisingly FAST!
Here is what I did:
Installed a new windshield and custom side view mirrors.
Had a paint shop color sand and buff the paint. It is much better but not perfect, there are some small dings
and body filler was used in some areas. Nothing has popped or had significant cracks – it is good driver quality
all around. No active rust under the doors, but there have been some repairs.
Dave Statland, the Corvair expert that did Jay Leno’s car came out and did the following: Rebuilt the
carburetor, installed the proper shrouding around the engine, replaced the pushrod tube “O” rings and gaskets
to eliminate oil leaks, got all of the gauges and lights to work, and installed a new fuel pump. We also hired
another mechanic to remove the gas tank, clean it, and replace the sending unit. He also adjusted the shift linkage
so that it is much smoother, fixed an electrical short and installed a new battery. Due to the replacement Cadillac
steering wheel (which is really cool!), the turn signals work but do not cancel, and there is a horn but it is not
hooked-up. I installed a vintage porcelain street sign to cover a gap in the engine bay that is Straight Outta
Compton!
The dash has been painted, I found the large chrome shift knob that looks cool and works great. There is not a
stereo, but speakers are installed. An iPhone boom box is all you need front or back.
The biggest job was the new upholstery and carpeting. We used a shop that specializes in both auto and boat
upholstery. The vinyl is marine grade and looks great. They built a rear shelf out of ¾” marine plywood that has
gas shocks. This accesses the air ride system, storage, and the battery for the car. There is an additional battery
under the dinette seat for the air ride system. Both seat cushions in the back lift up for storage.
I was going to get a vintage Formica table and install it with a piano hinge on the bulkhead but a folding
table works better. You can put a market size umbrella in the square holes on the top rails for shade in the back.
For you Coca-Cola or Budweiser collectors, can you see a red and write logo umbrella in the back??!!
I have all of the receipts from the last 2 years and a clean CA title in my name.

2016 Chevy Colorado Duramax gets 31 mpg highway
Mon, Nov 9 2015The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Duramax and its similarly diesel-powered GMC Canyon sibling are the most fuel-efficient new trucks on the market in America. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates 31 miles per gallon highway, 22 mpg city, and 25 mpg combined for two-wheel-drive Colorado and Canyon diesels. That's just good enough to take the pickup fuel-economy title from the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel HFE, which carries EPA estimates of 29 mpg highway, 21 mpg city, and 24 mpg combined. Four-wheel-drive models offer slightly lower economy figures of 29/20/23, respectively. Drivers can cover quite some distance, too – the GM twins' 21-gallon tanks mean a maximum range of 651 miles.
Your browser does not support iframes.
Diesel's reputation may be somewhat tarnished in the US after Volkswagen's emissions scandal, but Chevy wants to assure potential customers that there are no tricks with the Colorado's figures. The pickup's engine features NOx-reducing tech like exhaust gas recirculation, and the EPA and California Air Resources Board recently chose the truck to take the additional step of real-world emissions tests. The 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder with 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque had no problems with the more stringent evaluation, and "the agency expressed no issues or concerns," according to the company's statement. The diesel Colorado goes on sale this fall, and the Duramax costs $3,730 over a similarly equipped V6 model. We've gone ahead and included dueling press releases from both Chevy and GMC below for your reading pleasure. The EPA-estimated highway fuel economy for 2016 Colorado four-wheel drive diesel is 29 mpg. The EPA has issued a Certificate of Conformity for the Chevrolet Colorado Duramax diesel. The agency expressed no issues or concerns following its recent extensive testing and evaluation of the emission control system on the Colorado Duramax diesel.
2014 Chevrolet Silverado tows in new configurator, microsite
Mon, 21 Jan 2013Judging by your continued enthusiastic response to configurator notices, dear reader, you enjoy speccing out new cars as much as we do. Better still, there tends to be even more ways to personalize, configure and bloat theoretical MSRPs on full-size trucks as there are with more ordinary passenger cars. In addition to trim level, engine and transmission choices, truck buyers usually have to specify items like cab configuration, bed length, number of driven axles, tow packages, gear ratios and all sorts of bits and bobs.
That's why we're pleased to see the DIY specification utility for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado come alive so soon after this week's Detroit Auto Show debut. While the configurator lacks pricing (General Motors hasn't announced numbers yet) and full options, you can still spec out your half-ton rig, and even print it out or email it to your friends. Beyond the configurator, the new model-specific site is pretty cool, too, with various videos and closer looks at the truck's new features.
The new Chevrolet pickup range won't be on dealer lots until sometime this summer, so whether you're a building contractor, an avid sportsman or just a guy or gal that loves full-size trucks, you might want to check out the link below to keep your appetite whetted. If you're more of a Sierra fan, well, it looks like you're going to have to wait a while - GMC hasn't updated its site yet.
GM profits threatened by glut of pickups
Wed, 05 Dec 2012Automotive News reports that General Motors may slash production or ramp up discounts in order to deal with an oversupply of pickup trucks. GM currently has more than double the standard supply of pickups, and the vehicles are threatening to dampen the automaker's profits for 2013. Typically, automakers try to sustain a 60- to 75-day supply of vehicles, but GM is currently loaded with a 139-day supply, as of last month. At the end of November, the automaker was sitting on 245,853 units.
The manufacturer says that it will adjust production accordingly before laying any incentives on the profitable pickups. Even so, there's some concern that the inventory swell could hurt the roll-out of the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. GM actually began slowly stepping back production in August, but it's clear the company will take further action as it heads toward the end of the year and into the next. Analysts predict the automaker could reduce pickup manufacturing by nearly half in the first quarter of 2013.
That still may not be enough to keep GM from laying extra cash on the Silverado and GMC Sierra. While the company's incentive spending was down in November compared to the same month in 2011, both the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150 saw double-digit percentage increases in sales last month while the Silverado and Sierra numbers slid compared to a year prior. Incentive spending could help move more trucks and add some balance to the GM inventory surge.
