SELLER REMARKS |
|
For those of you who think that the muscle car era ended in 1970, let this 1971 Chevelle SS454 serve as proof to the contrary. Numbers-matching, heavily documented, brutally fast, and exceptionally well-finished, this incredible LS5 Chevelle stalks the streets like the muscle car era never ended.
According to the original window sticker and build sheet, both of which come with the car, the only major deviation from stock on this amazing Chevelle is the color. However, given that the factory painted it Classic Copper, it's kind of understandable that during the bare-metal respray that they might want to show off a bit. So it was treated to basic black, and nothing looks better on a big block Chevelle than this formal tuxedo of a paint job. It is, as you'd expect, extremely nice and since they knew they were doing a color change, they went the extra mile to get it straight. White SS stripes are beautifully applied and belong on this car, which is unquestionably a real-deal SS454. It shows only the most minor signs of use, but there's no question this car was built to show off and aside from the inevitable small nick here and there, the sucker looks ready for competition at the highest levels. It also wears a correct black vinyl roof, which was how it came originally, and the replacement piece fits extremely well. Nice chrome, new emblems, polished stainless, and all the other little details are sharply detailed as well.
The car also came with Sandalwood interior, which has been swapped to white for great effect against the black paint. The seats are blindingly clean, but it's not overwhelming thanks to black carpets and a matching dash, which invert the exterior colors and give it a very inviting look. Given the car's pedigree, there are no major modifications or alterations inside, just nicely restored components that more than live up to the standards set by the exterior. Bright gauge faces (including a factory tach), an almost flawless steering wheel, and a center console make it feel factory-fresh inside. That window sticker I mentioned also includes a rather lengthy list of options, including factory air-conditioning, an AM/FM stereo radio, rear window defroster, tilt steering column, and a remote-control rear view mirror. Aside from the door panels showing a little bit of age, the interior is as nicely preserved as the interior, including the trunk which is properly finished with a correct mat and full-sized bias-ply spare.
The LS5 454 cubic inch V8 cranked out a stout 365 horsepower in 1971, yet was user-friendly enough to run power steering and A/C, making it the best of both worlds. Highly detailed, fully rebuilt, and numbers-matching, the engine has limitless reserves of torque and is just a quick wipe-down away from being ready to pop the hood at a show. Power steering and brakes are included, and the TH400 3-speed automatic transmission shifts without hesitation and powers a 12-bolt rear with Positraction. A detailed chassis shows quite well and includes a new dual exhaust system that sounds just right. Gorgeous factory SS wheels are arguably the best-looking OEM hoops of the era and carry F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas tires for a showroom-correct look.
Simply stunning in every way, fully documented and highly pedigreed, this is the Chevelle that you've been waiting for. And because most guys foolishly think the horsepower wars ended in 1970, it's a lot more affordable than some of its older siblings. Call today!

High-powered sports and luxury cars were everywhere at the New York Auto Show, prompting the obvious question for enthusiasts: How long will this golden age of performance last? Industry leaders have some time before regulations elevate the Corporate Average Fuel Economy level in 2025. Even then, they expect cars rippling with power to survive in some form. "Is it the end of an era," I don't think so," said Ola Kallenius, Daimler AG board member for Mercedes-Benz cars marketing and sales. "That performance element of individual mobility I don't think will ever go away." Kallenius, who oversaw the company's AMG division from 2010-2013, expects it to continue to grow. Last year, AMG sold a record 68,875 units around the world, an increase of 44.6 percent over 2014, with strong growth in the US, China, and Germany. Still, there's always the potential for gas to spike, and pending fuel economy regulations are looming. That could lead AMG to add electrification to its products, Kallenius said, pointing to the electric SLS as a test case. Chevy is also thinking ahead, said Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer of the Camaro. He wouldn't bite when asked about electrification for the Camaro (he did say "never say never"), but admitted in 2025 "it's going to be pretty tough to sell V8s." For now, things are rosy for muscle cars, and Chevy confidently showcased the 640-hp Camaro ZL1 in coupe and convertible form in New York. "I think that this is truly the golden age of performance," Oppenheiser said. It's hard to disagree. News & Analysis News: The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF was a show-stopper in New York. Analysis: There was a palpable energy when this RF — for Retractable Fastback — was revealed the night before the show at a trendy off-site venue near the Hudson River. Even as a parade of SUVs and flashy luxury cars rolled out the rest of the week, the Miata remained a hot topic. The Retractable Fastback is really a clever targa top, with part of the roof stowing behind the seats, adding about 100 pounds compared to the standard convertible. It makes the car more practical and arguably more attractive. The RF continues Mazda's tradition of selling the Miata with a hardtop variant. The first and second generations offered a detachable one, and a power retractable hardtop (a $1,700 option) was available on third-gen models. Judging by its reception in New York, the RF could prove to be even more popular than its predecessors.

It won't be long before we see the official, production-ready Chevrolet SS sedan (hint: it will be revealed this weekend). And to tide us over until all of the official details are released about the US-spec version, we have this: the Holden VF Commodore SS V show car, a performance-oriented brother to the Calais V that debuted earlier in the week.
What we really want to know about the SS V is what lies underhood, but General Motors' Australian arm is keeping that under wraps until the Chevy model breaks cover this weekend. Nevertheless, it's obvious that the SS V will be a serious performer, with all sorts of aggressive cues driving that home on the car's exterior. Take a look at those 20-inch billet aluminum wheels that hide big Brembo brake calipers up front, the sculpted hood and front fascia, the wide air intakes with LED running lights and the quad exhaust pipes out back. It's like the Pontiac G8 GXP never even left us.
Inside, there's a sporty-looking interior with aluminum accents that mix in with black leather and suede surfaces, all tied together in the middle with an eight-inch MyLink touchscreen infotainment system. It looks great, and again, while we don't know anything regarding powertrain details, it makes us oh-so happy to see a manual shifter smack dab in the middle of the center console.

During game five of the World Series, Chevrolet was set to do a spot of marketing for the 2014 Silverado - fans at Busch Stadium in St. Louis would hold up placards that spelled out the words "Silverado Strong," a theme that Chevy has been promoting since the Silverado's launch with the song "Strong," by Will Hoge. The St. Louis promo was ultimately called off, though, over concerns that it'd be insensitive to the visiting Boston Red Sox. (You can see the image of what the stunt would have looked like above, courtesy of one timely Reddit user.)
Now, the Busch Stadium stunt might not have been a big deal, had the St. Louis Cardinals not been playing the Boston Red Sox. Following the tragic events in Boston during the marathon back in April, the phrase "Boston Strong" gained traction among the city's citizens, especially at sporting events. So, you can imagine that Chevy's appropriation of the phrase might not sit well with some fans.
The stunt was ultimately shelved after images of the signs went viral before the game, leading to a bit of a public backlash. Chevy spokesperson Michael Albano said of the promo that it was meant to show the brand's "commitment to baseball and its fans." But after the images went viral, the company "realized there was the possibility that we may offend some of the very fans we were trying to honor," Albano told Automotive News via email.
