SELLER REMARKS

When we get cars like this spectacular 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle convertible, it's hard to know where to begin. The gorgeous paint job? The brilliant interior filled with powerful stereo equipment? The thundering big block engine? See what I mean?

So let's start with that paint. It's kind of like the factory's Black Cherry, only with a lot more metallic in it to make it glow. It's deep and rich and sophisticated and so well done that you almost can't resist running your fingers down its flanks just to see if it's still wet. The Chevelle's look is timeless and even in 1972 it was one of the more attractive cars in the Chevrolet showroom, and things like the cowl induction hood and white SS stripes only add to it. Finish quality is quite good with only the most minor signs of use, and for a car that just passed its 42nd birthday, it looks to have received a new lease on life. The later Chevelle's single headlight front end is incredibly handsome, particularly with a blacked-out SS grille and matching emblems on the front fenders. The chrome and stainless trim was fully restored with the rest of the car, but amazingly, nothing was shaved or modified during the build. They just focused on getting the details right and it's paid off handsomely.

The glittering white interior is mostly stock, including bucket seats and a center console for the right Chevelle sporting attitude. Black carpets work well with the otherwise sparkling white upholstery, and for cruising with the top down, it's a smart choice. The dash was custom-built by Thunder Road and includes attractive gauges from Classic Instruments. A billet steering wheel on a tilt column frames the dash but the more important part is just to the right, where you'll find an AM/FM/CD stereo head unit that powers custom speakers in the kick panels. A/C is a nice find on a vintage convertible, especially with modern equipment powering it behind the scenes so it's effective and reliable today. The white power convertible top is brand new and offers a glass rear window and matching white boot for a clean, finished look. Open the trunk and there's a very cool custom subwoofer installation that's begging to finally flex its boom.

In 1972, the horsepower wars were all but over, but this Chevelle acts like nothing changed. With a 454 cubic inch V8 that's been liberally drenched in chrome and billet aluminum, it has the punch of the nastiest of the factory SS models and the style of a pure show car. Forget factory-correct tribute cars, this one goes for trophies at every opportunity, offering gorgeous body-colored inner fenders, a trick billet accessory drive, and beautiful dress-up parts that look right. Edelbrock supplied a polished intake manifold and aluminum heads, so this is a lot more than just a dressed-up lump of iron and the long-tube headers feed a great-sounding dual exhaust system that doesn't fight with the stereo to be heard. A TH400 3-speed automatic is the smart choice behind a big block and feeds a 12-bolt rear end that won't complain, either. The suspension has been fortified with upgraded shocks, but surprisingly few modifications were required to fit those giant wheels: 20s in front and 22s in back with 255/35/20s and 285/30/22s, respectively.

Well-crafted and beautifully executed, this is a Chevelle that really can do it all: shows, cruising, and hair-raising acceleration. Call today!

Question of the Day: What's the most irritating car name?

Wed, Mar 9 2016

You hear a lot about how the Chevrolet Nova was a sales flop in Mexico because "No va" means "it doesn't go" in Spanish; in fact, the Nova sold pretty well south of the border, and in any case most Spanish-speakers know that "Nova" means "new" in Latin and Portuguese. However, General Motors doesn't deserve to be let off the hook for bad car names, because the Oldsmobile Achieva— no doubt inspired by the excruciating "coffee achievers" ads of the 1980s— scrapes the biggest fingernails down the screechiest chalkboard in the US-market car-name world. That is, unless you think Daihatsu's incomprehensible choice of Charade was worse. Meanwhile, Japanese car buyers could get machines with cool names like Mazda Bongo Friendee or Honda Life Dunk. It's just not fair! So, what car name drives you the craziest? Related Video: Auto News Design/Style Chevrolet Honda Mazda Daihatsu Automotive History questions car names

The story of the 2014 Chevrolet SS: "Luxury, power, refinement, handling"

Thu, 07 Mar 2013

Not including the women and men who built it, the 2014 Chevrolet SS has only been seen in person by a piddling number of people - fewer humans than would fill the gymnasium at a high school volleyball game. Not including the men and women who built it, no one has driven it. Even so, it is already saddled with two controversies: the way it looks and the way it shifts.
First to that shifting. Did we love the last Americanized Holden, the awesomely sportsome Pontiac G8 GXP, and its six-speed manual? Of course. Do we wish the SS came with a six-speed manual? Of course. But we'd like a toboggan to come with a manual transmission. We'd put a manual transmission on a weasel if we could because we're just wired that way; if it moves, it should come with a stick and a clutch. Or at least the option.
Let's climb down off the ledge, though. We haven't driven the SS and we have no idea how good (or not) the automatic is. And the Hobson's Choice in transmissions when it comes to sport sedans like the BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and Jaguar XFR-S and, oh yeah, cars-that-really-should-have-manuals like the Audi R8 and Nissan GT-R and Porsche 918 and every single Lamborghini and Ferrari, for instance, hasn't stopped us from enjoying what is clearly the gruesome, dual-clutched demise of Western automotive civilization. Because in spite of our ululations at the dying of the six-speed light, we understand.
