I purchased this Chevelle after lengthy negotiations with the 69 year old woman, who purchased it new from Washburn Chevrolet in Santa Barbara, California. When I purchased it, it was a 137,000 mile Astro Blue Malibu with Light Blue interior, a White Power Top, Power Steering, Power Disc Brakes, Bucket Seats with Center Console, 350 c.i./Turbo 350 and a 12 Bolt 2.73:1 Differential. The original owner kept it in a carport, in Santa Barbara, nearly its entire life, although it was in need of a restoration. The only body rot was a quarter (coin) size hole in the top of each rear wheel arch, just below where the rear quarter windows allow water to drip. The trunk and floor pans still have the factory finish. I found one pin hole on the passenger front floorboard, although the surrounding metal was in great condition. The other areas on this car, where these cars are known to rot, are in excellent condition.
I was indecisive regarding whether or not to restore it to its original configuration, or build what I recall was rumored in the 80's as a COPO 427 Manual Transmission Super Sport. The first thing I considered was the original color combinations. This car was ordered by a woman, as a woman's car, and it presented itself as just that. I began to think of the SS396 70 Chevelle in the 80's which I had painted this exact Black and Blue color combination, so I chose to bring back my original car, in a convertible. People sometimes follow this car until I reach my destination, just so they can look at it. It gets a lot of attention and comments, plus it gets 15 MPG on the freeway.
The car was completely disassembled, but was not removed from the frame, because it did not need to be. The frame, undercarriage and body bushings were all in good shape. Besides, I built this car to be driven, rain or shine, although I haven't had the heart to get it wet. It hasn't even been misted with water since I began the restoration in 2006. It still has all original sheet metal, and any options or parts I purchased are original Chevrolet OEM or NOS, aside from degradable parts such as weather stripping, etc. All front suspension pieces, inner fenders, core support, brackets, filler panels, and engine accessory brackets were powder coated. The engine is a 1969 427 from an Impala Station Wagon. It is completely rebuilt by a professional shop and has GM Performance Parts aluminum heads and intake manifold, thermal coated exhaust manifolds, a Pertronix distributor upgrade and a mild cam which has a slight lope, until it warms up. I still have the original 427 heads, cam, lifters, push rods and intake manifold. The engine has the perfect amount of power for this car, considering most people over-build big block cars. I re-produced the very rare dual snorkel air cleaner, and added original used 427 emblems from a 1968 Impala, below the SS fender emblems.
Safety items, such as rubber brake lines, fuel lines, brakes and steering components have all been replaced. The differential is a factory 1968 3.55:1 positraction with 80 lb. springs, and is completely rebuilt by a professional shop, including new axles. Other options include a rare Four Spoke Steering Wheel, NOS Windshield Washer Monitor, Interior Rear View Mirror with Map Light, Tilt Steering Column, Rear Window Defogger and a restored Factory AM/FM/8 Track Four Speaker Stereo with NOS tape door (needs front speakers). The wheels are reproduction SS wheels, but are chromed, rather than having beauty rings. The door lock knobs and rear ash trays were eliminated, for a clean look. During the build, I replaced or rebuilt the pieces which a lot of people ignore, such as the Heater Core, door hinges and Steering box. I also added the factory sway bars, front and rear.
I replaced most of the wiring, including the engine, front end and dash harnesses, and restored an original SS dashboard. I added full instrumentation and had the dash pad recovered by "Just Dashes" in Van Nuys, Ca. The Power Windows are complete original units as well as the Power Door locks, which are missing the solenoids. The doors were predrilled, prior to painting the car, so the solenoids will bolt right in and plug into the existing wiring. The interior was manufactured by PUI and professionally installed, back to the original Light Blue with Dark Blue carpet configuration. I kept the dashboard and kick panels black in order to tone down the blue. This color combination goes absolutely perfect with the Candy Oriental Blue stripes on the original GM functional Cowl Induction hood (ZL-2 option), and trunk lid. A new correct grain black top and new hydraulic lines completed the restoration. Included with this sale are the original owner's manual, Protect-o-plate, Dealer LP album featuring the SS Chevelle, two different Custom feature accessories brochures, Big Chevrolet showroom catalog and the original build sheet, which I found between the rear seat springs and pad.
I have a lot of money invested in this restoration, because I refused to skimp on any item. I have restored, or assisted in the restoration of multiple Chevelles and El Caminos, so I know my way around these cars. This car is put together just as it would have been, had the Washburn Performance Center decided to compete with Yenko, Baldwin or any of the other performance based dealerships of the era. It would be difficult to find another 1970 Chevelle, in the rust free condition this one maintains, without paying a high end auction house price. This Chevelle does not rattle, squeak or have any other problems inherent to muscle car convertibles, because it was pampered by the original owner, and is now treated with the same respect by me. I am nearing retirement, so I am choosing to sell this car, of the two classics I own, in order to ease the responsibilities of caring for more than one car. I do not intend to sell this car cheap, so please be prepared to bid accordingly. If it does not reach the reserve, I will not sell it. The reserve is more than fair, considering the "Rust Free" condition of this car.
Any questions will be answered as soon as possible, and you can count on honesty from me. I don't want you to be surprised by inaccurate information. This car will be made available for inspection, on a case by case basis, with consideration to distance and time constraints. Cash is preferred, but Pay Pal or bank transfer will be considered. This is a 43 year old car, which I have restored, or had professionals restore, and as such I consider it safe and reliable. However, for obvious reasons, I can not offer any guarantee or warranty. Once the reserve is met and this car sells, the buyer may inspect it and back out of the sale if it does not meet their expectations. In this case, the buyer will not receive negative feedback. I am that confident in the quality of the work performed, and my credibility.
Shipping, or delivery of this car is solely the responsibility of the buyer, although I will assist as much as my schedule will allow. This vehicle, nor any of the associated paperwork will leave my possession, until payment is made in full and securely within my control. For those of you this offends, I apologize. I need to take this protective stance, considering all of my hard work and hard earned cash which has been expended on this car.

Chevrolet donates 300 vehicles damaged by Sandy to help train first responders
Thu, 28 Feb 2013Super Storm Sandy took out a lot of automobiles in its path of destruction through the Northeast last October. The number surpassed 250,000 at last count, and a few of those were owned by Chevrolet - cars either sitting on dealership lots or waiting at port to be shipped off. Rendered unsellable by the water damage inflicted by Sandy, these vehicles were facing the crusher. But Chevy didn't send them there.
Instead, Chevy had a better idea: It will be donating 300 of these vehicles damaged by Sandy to help train first responders at Guardian Centers in Perry, GA. Chevy is the official automotive partner of Guardian Centers, which is an 830-acre facility that trains first responders in disaster preparedness. Junked cars are practically a consumable commodity there, where a full-size cityscape simulator gives trainees an entire urban center in which to train for all sorts of rescue operations and disaster scenarios.
Chevy says its particular vehicles will be used "in conjunction with role players for wide area searches, traffic congestion in emergency situations, counter terrorism, public order and mass casualty exercises." While grim scenarios all, we're certainly glad there are people out there preparing for the unexpected. While a zombie apocalypse isn't officially on the list of potential disasters to prepare for, when the virus hits, we'll be hot-footing it to Perry, GA to hang with these guys and gals.
Opel CEO talks new EV, will likely be fresh face for Chevy, too
Wed, Jul 23 2014The rumored demise of the Opel Ampera has been confirmed, but there's good news, too. Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann has been busy Tweeting information about the brand's next plug-in vehicle, admitting that the Ampera is on the way out but that plug-in vehicles are here to stay. His Tweets, in full, read: After the eventual run-out of the current generation Ampera, we'll introduce a successor product in the electric vehicle segment. Our next electric vehicle will be part of our massive product offensive – with 27 new vehicles in the 2014-2018 time frame. We see eMobility as important part of the mobility of tomorrow and we will continue to drive down costs & deliver affordability. As we learned earlier this week, the Ampera will not be refreshed when the current Chevy Volt is updated, most likely because of slow sales. Opel sold just 332 Amperas in the first five months of 2014. For now, General Motors is still building Amperas in Michigan for export to Europe. So, what might this new EV mean for the General Motors plug-in fleet? Official spokespeople are being quiet, but we think it's safe to say the new EV Neumann is talking about is not simply a rebadged Chevy Spark EV. This is the first official word about an entirely new EV, and we expect it will come to both the Chevrolet and Opel brands.
Chevrolet Camaros at SEMA are a mobile accessory catalog
Wed, 06 Nov 2013Chevy's goal at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas this week seems to be to show as much of its Performance and Accessories catalog as possible. That's why it brought three different Camaros - two with V8s and one powered by a V6 - with all of the best goodies from the catalog already fitted.
We gave a more in-depth recap of the Performance Camaro V8 Concept, the Performance Camaro V6 Concept and the Performance Garage Concept already, but we figured you'd like a short recap for each. It should be noted, though, that you can order all of the items you see here for your own Camaro, so be sure to take a long, hard look at our live galleries, just in case you're in the market for some mods.
Essentially, the Performance Garage Concept and the Performance V8 Concept are the same car - the only difference is that the later features a whole host of aesthetic tweaks in addition to its aftermarket, shorty exhaust headers and 2.75-inch exhaust. (The Performance Garage Concept has been usefully placed on its side; the better to see the new parts added to the vehicle.) The Performance V6 Concept is notable because, despite being a V6, there's no shortage of performance goodies fitted. All three of the Performance Camaros benefit from items from the Camaro ZL1, which can also be ordered through the catalog.
