Up for bid is my 1967 SS-350 Pro-Street Camaro. It has a 600+HP 406 SBC with a Tremec TKO-500 5 speed transmission and an S-60 Strange rear end which has been narrowed two inches on both sides. It has manual steering and manual brakes. Engine is a 11:1 compression 406 SBC with AFR 220 heads. It has a Dart SHP block with a Scat rotating assembly (4.125” bore X 3.80” stroke). The crank is a Scat light weight forged which cost $1200 by itself. The rods are Scat H-Beam rods with Mahle forged pistons. It has a Comp mechanical street roller cam with around .600 lift and 250 duration @ .050”, and Comp pushrods. It has new Howard pressure fed mechanical roller lifters with new AFR 220 heads with titanium retainers, AFR stud girdles, and Harland Sharp roller rockers (1.6 intake/1.5 exhaust). ARP studs and bolts are used throughout the motor. The new intake manifold is a World Motown and the carb is a Holley Ultra 950 Aluminum HP Carb. The heads and manifold have not been modified. The ignition system is all Mallory. The water pump is an electric Meziere and the large radiator is a Griffin. The motor stays around 180 degrees all the time. All the Earls AN fittings and steel braided lines are real, including the #16 radiator hose lines. Some of the rear fittings by the gas tank are XRP. The fuel pump is a Mallory and the car has a 10 gallon fuel tank in the trunk. The Optima battery is also in the trunk. The exhaust system includes 1 7/8” Stahl headers with 3 ˝” collectors and 3” pipe going all the way to the back. The car has two sets of mufflers to keep it quiet including two 3” bullet mufflers in the front and two 3” flowmasters in the back. Clutch assemble is all Ram with a steel Ram flywheel, Ram diaphragm pressure plate, and Ram clutch disk. The bell housing is a steel Lakewood unit. All the clutch linkage has been replaced with new replacement pieces. Transmission is a Tremec TKO-500 wide ratio transmission with a 3:27 ratio first gear, 1:1 ratio 4th gear, and an overdrive 5th gear. The car can do 70 mph on the freeway at around 2500 rpm’s with the overdrive. Rearend is a Strange S-60 with 4:11 ratio gears with a posi unit. The rear end has been narrowed two inches on both sides. I did a nice home built mini-tub job in the back to get the tires to fit. Driveshaft has the larger 1350 U-Joints in the front and back, and includes a driveshaft safety loop. Car has Centerline wheels with Mickey Thompson Tires. Brakes includes Aerospace Components front disc brakes with the standard Strange drum brakes in the rear. All flexible hose lines have been replaced and the brake lines have all been replaced with Stainless Steel brake lines. The brakes work almost as good as power brakes. Steering includes a Flaming River tilt steering column with a Grant Steering wheel. All steering tie rods and ball joints have been replaced. All upper and lower control arms have also been replaced. Steering is nice and tight.

Chevrolet Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo could only work in a video game [w/video]

Thu, Nov 20 2014

There's something wondrous about the Vision Gran Turismo series of concepts that has let companies go wild with completely imaginary concepts for Gran Turismo. For Chevrolet's crack at the idea, it has taken a page out of its performance past with the Chaparral Can-Am racers of the '60s and '70s, with its designers having reinterpreted that period look for the future of motorsports as the Chaparral 2X. In real life, the 2X looks even better than in earlier photos. The design takes inspiration from someone in a flying suit with head down and arms outstretched, an influence you can really see that in the vehicle's shape. The driver lies facedown inside with the instruments projected onto a visor. Unfortunately, the powertrain here is a complete flight of fancy and works purely in the video game world. It imagines a laser propelled by lithium-ion batteries and an air-powered generation to make 900 horsepower. The 2X has a theoretical top speed of 240 miles per hour and hits 60 mph in a lightning-quick 1.5 seconds. Scroll down to see the concept on video with Chevrolet designers describing their inspiration and read the company's full announcement. It's also downloadable in Gran Turismo 6. Chevrolet to Show Chaparral Vision Gran Turismo Concept Boundary-pushing, Chevy-powered race cars changed motorsports design DETROIT – When racers Jim Hall and Hap Sharp founded Chaparral Cars in 1962, few could have guessed how they would shake up the conformities of the racing world – and fundamentally change it. Through pioneering applications of aerodynamics and aerospace technology, and a partnership with Chevrolet Research and Development, Chaparral Cars advanced the science of racing cars. It also triumphed on the track over well-established sports car companies from around the world, using Chevrolet horsepower. It was that spirit of innovation that inspired the Chevrolet Chaparral 2X VGT concept race car developed for the Vision Gran Turismo project, which celebrates the 15th anniversary of PlayStation® racing game Gran Turismo by inviting manufacturers to give fans a glimpse into the future of automotive design. It will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Nov. 19, and gamers will be able race the Chaparral 2X VGT following the release of an online update for Gran Turismo 6 during the holiday season.

Recharge Wrap-up: EV torque secrets, UC Davis maps future of biofuels

Fri, Jul 25 2014

A UC Davis white paper maps out "Three Routes Forward for Biofuels," balancing investment risk with carbon benefits. The first option is "incremental," in which we tinker with the existing biofuel manufacturing infrastructure for small improvements over time. The "transitional" plan suggests integrating cellulosic production and other innovations with existing operations. The third route, called "leapfrogging," would mean building refineries based on new technology such as cellulosic and algae-based biofuels. The paper suggests ways the US could use these three routes together in different areas, and predicts the payoffs in terms of carbon emissions could be significant if the right people are willing to risk the capital. After all, financial advisers are always telling investors to diversify their portfolios to manage risk and rewards in the same way. Read more over at the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies. The Formula E Long Beach ePrix will offer free admission. The seventh round of the inaugural all-electric race season, which was moved from Los Angeles to the streets of Long Beach, will offer fans free grandstand and general admission. The race, which takes place on April 5, 2015, will use a 1.6-mile portion of IndyCar's Grand Prix of Long Beach. Read more at LA Times. Polaris is now offering its 2015 GEM electric vehicles, including the new street-legal eM1400 LSV. The passenger and utility vehicles come in two- to six-passenger configurations, many of which are street legal on roads with posted speed limits of up to 35 miles per hour. The eM1400 LSV utility vehicle seats two, offers 1,250 pounds of payload, 1,250 pounds of towing capacity, a top speed of 25 mph and a range of up to 45 miles. Its on-board charger plugs into any standard 110-volt outlet. Read more at Hybrid Cars and check out all the different configurations yourself at the Polaris website. In EVs, more torque does not always equal faster. Green Car Reports found this out when driving the Fiat 500e (with 147 pound-feet) against the similarly weighted Chevrolet Spark EV (with 400 pound-feet). The secret is, at least in part, in the gearing. The Fiat has a 9.6:1 reduction gear, making it quicker at lower speeds despite having far less available torque, while the Chevy uses a 3:1 ratio. The trade-off though, is in top speed. Furthermore, Chevy electronically limits the torque delivery at low speeds, as 400 pound-feet is a lot of launch for the little Spark EV to handle.

Opel's version of the Chevy Bolt will confuse people at Paris Motor Show

Fri, Aug 26 2016

Two things are now official. First, Opel will reveal the Ampera-e, or the European version of the Chevrolet Bolt, at the Paris Motor Show in October. Second, General Motors has outdone itself in brand confusion, topping the Bolt/Volt ridiculousness. Opel isn't giving a single-charge range for the Ampera-e but the company is promising a "significantly longer range" than other electric vehicles. The Bolt is estimated to have a 200-mile range on the EPA scale, so whatever the Opel achieves on the European cycle will be done with the same batteries and motor as the Chevy. Opel is also looking to appeal to the auto enthusiasts with other factoids, which are basically just Bolt stats translated into metric. For instance, the Ampera-e will be able to go 0 to 50 kilometers per hour (which is 31 miles per hour to us Americans, but we're talking Europe here) in just 3.2 seconds. And for those looking to stay connected, as many as seven mobile devices can attached to the car's wireless hot spot. GM said in February that the European of the Bolt would be available across the pond next year, so the most recent bit of news isn't shocking. Still, General Motors continues to create confusion between all-electric Bolt and the extended-range plug-in Volt. It's already been reported that the Korean symbol and pronunciation of what is "B" in English is identical to the English "V," meaning that there is no difference between "Bolt" and "Volt" in that country (though there are no plans to sell the Bolt in South Korea as of yet). Now, in Europe, they're taking the name they used to use for the European of the Volt — Ampera — and merely adding an "-e" at the end of it. For those looking to be less confused, take a look at Opel's press release here.
