1988 Chevrolet Camaro Iroc Z28 Race Show Car on 2040-cars
La Grange, Illinois, United States
I have owned this car for 15 of the last 19 years. It started out as a pristine low mileage IROC-Z 5.7L and was transformed into the beast she is today. OK, where to start.
Exterior: The car was completely disassembled around 10 years ago, shaved and smoothed out all emblems and logos. Paint is a deep base coat black with about four coats of clear. Paint shows very well but for a true show car i would say she needs a fresh coat as it is 10 years old now. But dont get me wrong, it may not be perfect but its still a deep gloss, zero rust, awesome looking car that gets a ton of attention. Shaved handles open with remotes and theres an emergency pop in the well just in case. 6" fiberglass cowl hood just clears all the goodies underneath. Chrome 18" perfect rims by Stern performance are wrapped in 255/40 Toyo Proxes up front and 265/40 Mickey Thompson drag radials out back. All lights and signals function as they should, except no fog lights for better air flow. Limo tints all around. Interior: New black carpet front and back, new head liner and visors. No rear seats, front Corbeau seats with 5 point harnesses. 6 point welded in roll cage with removeable side bars make it a ton easier to get in and out(drivers side door handle will not clear the side bar when it is installed). Autometer gauges throughout and everything works as it should, all the way down to the speedo and fuel level. Hurst pro shifter. Power windows and hatch all function properly. Factory fuel tank has welded in sump pickup and fills from inside hatch(fuel cap is hard to get open sometimes and needs a caress from a screwdriver, would suggest replacing but never got around to draining tank). Pioneer stereo with Pheonix gold speaker front and rear and Q logic kick panels. No A/C or heat, no surprise. Engine and Drivetrain: Motor is a built LS7 big block, all forged internals, studded, ported and polished Merlin heads with stud girdles, Holley carb, MSD igniton setup, Edelbrock nitrous plate sytem never used, purge in front of hood, jet hot coated hooker full length headers down to true dual exhaust out the back, Willwood brakes, pistons, and calipers all around, master cylinder works off the power steering pump pressure to make up for loss of vacuum, yes it still has power steering for ease of cruising, built TH400 reverse manual w/brake, 5000 stall convertor, line-lock, B&M deep pan, trans cooler, Moser 9" rear end, Detroit locker with 4:10 gears, 33 spline axles, racing shocks and struts, lowering springs, Spohn trans cradle with driveshaft loop, Spohn rear end drag link, willwood adjustable control arms and sway bar, Aeromotive A100 fuel pump and filters, aluminum racing radiator cars temp always around 160, digital trans temp gauge by shifter, I'm sure im missing a lot feel free to ask questions. This car is a beast, drives straight and smooth, however due its extreme build is bein sold as-is. This isnt your average garage build where they throw in a huge motor and run it to the track. This car has all its bases covered, wasnt hacked to pieces, gets a ton of looks, and is a blast to drive around the neighborhood and the car shows. Shipping is solely the responsibility of the buyer, I will drive it on to a trailer and thats about it. Let me know if you need more pics or specific pics. Thanks for looking. |

GM laying off 500 workers to slow Chevy Sonic production
Sat, Oct 24 2015Due to slow sales of the Chevrolet Sonic and Buick Verano, General Motors is cutting a shift at the Orion Township plant that builds the pair. The move lays off about 500 workers, but most of them are expected to get offers to transfer to other factories, Automotive News reports. The move came just a day after GM announced adding 1,200 employees to the Detroit-Hamtramck plant. GM has been trying all year at the Orion Township factory to align production of the Sonic and Verano with their demand. The automaker first attempted idling the plant several times and eventually resorted to laying off about 100 workers. It also reduced the production rate there. With the huge rise in popularity of crossovers, demand for the plant's small cars is on the downturn. According to Automotive News, there's currently a 116-day supply of Sonics and 100 days of Veranos to sell. Delivers tell a similar tale because the Chevy is off 35.2 percent from January to September, and the Buick does little better with a 27.2 percent drop from the same period last year. While the situation at Orion Township might look rough now, big things are on the horizon. Soon, the new Chevy Bolt electric vehicle will be built there when it hits the market around 2017. Plus, the plant will also get a $245-million upgrade and 300 new jobs for another, unannounced vehicle.
New Takata problem results in recall of 414 GM vehicles
Mon, Oct 19 2015An airbag-inflator rupture discovered by Takata during testing has resulted in a new recall affecting 414 vehicles from General Motors, including 395 of them in the US. This latest campaign covers 2015 model-year examples of the Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Camaro, Equinox, Malibu, and GMC Terrain. There are no reported breaks in any of these vehicles on the road, and the company estimates only one percent of them actually have the faulty parts. According to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (as a PDF), one side-airbag inflator failed a cold test at -40 Fahrenheit "releasing high pressure gas and propelling the separated components apart." The supplier told GM about the failure the next day. In these vehicles, the safety device might not only burst but the bag could inflate incorrectly, as well. GM and Takata say that a cause is not yet known, but they are "conducting an investigation." GM will begin notifying affected owners via overnight mail on Oct. 19. Dealers will replace the side airbag modules on all of the affected vehicles with new components outside of the suspect lot. All of the removed parts will also be collected for further study. Takata's faulty front airbag inflators have resulted in a serious scandal for the supplier. Initial figures indicated 34 million US vehicles are need of repair, though more recent figures have knocked that down to 23.4 million bad parts in 19.2 million automobiles. GM was already among the dozen automakers with models to fix, and some of its pickups were affected, along with the Saab 9-2X and Pontiac Vibe. GM Statement: General Motors is recalling 395 cars and crossovers in the U.S. because one of the front seat side air bags inflators may be defective. In the event of a deployment, the air bag's inflator may rupture and the air bag may not properly inflate. The rupture could cause metal fragments to strike the vehicle occupants, potentially resulting in serious injury or death. GM is unaware of any incidents involving vehicles with these components, which were part of a lot in which one inflator failed acceptance testing at the supplier. Dealers will replace the side air bag module or modules in affected vehicles. Including Canada, Mexico and exports, the total population of the recall is 414, GM estimates 1 percent of the recalled vehicles may have the defect.
The U-2 spy plane needs high-performance cars to help land
Thu, Oct 15 2015Typically, aircraft deploy their landing gear from three main points. Most military aircraft, for example, deploy two gears at the back and one forward, like a tricycle. Some civilian aircraft flip the layout, with two in front and one in back - tail-draggers. The U-2 Dragon Lady is wildly different than any of these. With a 103-foot wingspan but a body that's just 63-feet long, the layout of the U-2 makes a traditional landing setup infeasible. Instead, the U-2 utilizes a pair of wheels, one up front and one in back. With such a bizarre layout, landings are so tough that since the U-2's earliest flights at Area 51, the US Air Force has used high-performance chase cars to guide the pilot down safely. The landing process isn't over there, though. As this video from Sploid shows, balancing out the aircraft to fit the detachable "pogos" – think training wheels for spy planes – is a comical procedure requiring a number of airman using their full body weight to even out the U-2. This video also recaps some of the great vehicles that have served as chase vehicles for this legendary spy plane. They include Chevrolet El Caminos, and the Fox-body Ford Mustangs so favored by the California Highway Patrol. For the last several years, the USAF has utilized products from General Motors, using fourth-generation Chevy Camaros, before switching over to the Pontiac GTO and most recently, the awesome Pontiac G8. It's fair to say that if you're a gearhead in the Air Force, this is the job you want. Check out the video, embedded up top.
