Chevy Bolt will go into production in Michigan in 2016 [UPDATE]

Fri, Feb 6 2015

While nothing official has been announced, it appears that General Motors may actually put the all-electric Chevy Bolt into production next year. That's the rumor that Reuters is reporting, citing two sources at suppliers for the upcoming $30,000 EV (although that $30,000 number bears some scrutiny). This rumor does fit in with earlier comments that the Bolt would arrive on the market in 2017. If it gets built, the Bolt will share more than a similar-sounding name with the Chevy Volt: the EV will be put together in metro Detroit. Reuters says the 200-mile electric car (and an Opel version) will be made in "an underused small-car plant north of Detroit," which means the Orion Township plant. GM could make between 25,000 and 30,000 Bolts a year there, if what the suppliers are saying is true. We have asked GM for a statement on this story and will update it if we hear back. UPDATE: General Motors manager of electrification technology communications, Kevin Kelly, told AutoblogGreen that, "Bolt EV Concept is just that – a concept. We're currently evaluating the vehicle program, but do not have any production announcements to make at this time."

Surprise! GM putting aluminum in next-gen pickups

Wed, Aug 5 2015

Last month, General Motors launched a series of ads touting the benefits of steel over aluminum – specifically, with regard to the Chevy Silverado versus the Ford F-150. (Kind of. We're not sure what a grizzly bear has to do with anything.) We took issue with the ads, with editor in chief Mike Austin saying they "reek of insecurity, and distract from the Silverado's strengths that could be used for positive advertising." But what bothers us more, is that yet another report surfaced claiming anti-aluminum GM will indeed use the weight-saving material in its next-generation fullsize trucks. On Tuesday, GM announced a $877-million investment for its truck plant in Flint, MI. But Reuters says that huge overhaul is because the trucks will use "substantially different equipment than the tools GM uses today." The report specifically states, "People familiar with the company's plans say GM's next-generation pickups and SUVs will make use of various materials, including aluminum and lightweight steel, to shed weight and gain fuel efficiency to meet tougher federal standards." The Silverado already uses a few aluminum components in the engine and hood, and if more widespread use will help GM build its best fullsize trucks ever, then that's great. Honestly, we have no reason to doubt that aluminum will be used in the next Silverado and GMC Sierra. We just hope GM remembers that nothing is ever truly deleted from the bowels of the Internet when it launches the subsequent "look how great aluminum is!" campaign. GM dealers unhappy about pickup prices

Mon, 21 Oct 2013

The backlash is beginning. Following General Motors' price hike of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra last week, dealers across the country are expressing their ire over increasing prices in the face of rebates and discounts on trucks from Ford and Ram.
Speaking to Automotive News, Sam Pilato, the general manager at Dimmitt Chevrolet in Clearwater, FL, Silverados are "selling very poorly." W. Carrol Smith, the president of Monument Chevrolet in the heart of truck country, Texas, said, "[GM's] position is that the vehicle stands on its own and it doesn't need a bigger rebate. That's not what the market is telling us."
According to AN, that's the general attitude amongst Chevy and GMC dealers across the country, where the twin pickups are getting butchered in sales by competitors offering up to $9,000 off their sticker prices. Part of the problem for GM is that its trucks are arriving on the market near the end of the current F-150's lifecycle, a fact that Ford has taken advantage of.
