I have owned this truck since 1981.  I purchased it in Reno, Nevada and it was originally sold in Reno.  I have used it for a daily driver, hunting, and all of the other things trucks are used for but I have always over-maintained it and taken exceptional care of the truck.  It has been garaged for all but 2 of the 33 years I've owned it.  As you can see by the listing it has about 275,000 miles. I purchased it with 41,157 miles.  As is indicated, I have only driven the truck about 17,000 miles in the last 10 years.  I bought another truck in 2007 and only drive this truck occasionally now.  It has taken me quite a few years to come to the point where I can finally consider selling it.  It has been a great truck for me.  Many of the drivetrain components have been replaced over the years and I have maintenance records to show when the repairs were done.  My maintenance records are detailed and include receipts.   Have the build sheet out of the original seat in fair condition.  I have completed most of the maintenance myself.  It has surface rust on the undercarriage as shown in the photos.  I removed a dime sized rust spot on the passenger door 8 or so years ago by cutting the metal away and replacing it with new metal.  As the same time I coated the lower body side with 3M Rocker Schutz coating to resist paint chips before the final paint was applied.  A few years before that, I cut ventilation areas in the bottom of the rocker areas behind the front doors to prohibit water collection and arrest rust formation.  Rust preventative was applied and rust that had begun to appear in those areas has not progressed in over 10 years.  I will provide photos if there is concern about rust on the truck.

Engine/Drivetrain  7/2004  258,571 Mles

  • New GM Crate 4 bolt main engine from Summit Racing in Reno
  • Original TH350 Transmission rebuilt with mild shift kit
  • NP 205 Transfer Case checked/rebuilt/resealed
  • New water pump, fuel pump, HEI distributor, hoses, belts, master cylinder, etc,
  • Remote solenoid installed to correct GM hot start issues

The front and rear differential gears are stock.  They are 4.10 gear ratio and both differentials are open.  I have always changed the gear oil and replaced seals as necessary.

The 4-wheel-dirve works well.  Lock the hubs and shift it in, no issues.  I had the shifter professionally shortened in order to provide more center seat leg room.  The shortened lever does not affect the ability to shift to 4wd.

Brakes; Front got new calipers, pads, and hardware at 245,632.  Rear; always checked and maintained.

Tires; New BFG Radial Mud Terrain LT/255/85R16 at 262,981.  Alcoa OEM alloy wheels from newer style Chevrolet HD pickup.

New Steering Gear at 240,666.

Anti-sway bar added to front axle to improve cornering.  Also has steering stabilizer.

New Vortex mufflers at approximately 270,000.

Front seat out of newer Chevrolet pickup.  Cloth upholstery with headrests and integral seat belts.  Seat is bolted through floor to steel plate that connects front and rear bolts.

After-market cruise control that works but has issues on some settings.

Accessories:

  • 2" Softride suspension lift; front springs with Rancho RS-5000 shocks and rear blocks with KYB Gas-adjust shocks
  • 40+ gallon in-bed fuel tank gauged in dash  with electric switch on dash.  Fuel switch is mechanical switch on driver side floor.  Total fuel capacity in excess of 60 gallons
  • Spotlight
  • Interval windshield wipers
  • Blaupunkt AM/FM CD player with in-door speakers
  • Trailer Wiring
  • In-bed diamond plate aluminum tool box
  • Rubber bed mat and 2 spare tires.  One loose spare is 255/85R16 on Chevrolet chrome steel wheel (in bed) and one spare under bed 235/85R16 on steel wheel
  • Cargo light and switch from another similar truck.  Accessory interior lighting installed to light floor area when door is opened.  Interior cab and reading light from newer style Chevrolet pickup

Comes with the following:

Original Chevrolet owner, service, and assembly manuals, Chilton's service manual, original steering wheel in good condition, additional tailgate guard, other miscellaneous parts.

Oil changed at 274,492 a couple of weeks ago.  Mobil 1 Full Syn 10w-30.

I have tried to describe the truck the best I can.  It runs good and drives nice.  It is a very nice example of a well maintained truck, some might consider it babied.  It is not perfect and is not a show truck as I have never restored it.  I can be contacted with any questions and will be happy to provide honest answers to the best of my ability.

We really want to use an eCrate to restomod an old GM car. Here's what we'd build

Fri, Oct 30 2020

You hopefully saw the news today of GM's introduction of its Connect and Cruise eCrate motor and battery package, which effectively makes the Bolt's electric motor, battery pack and myriad other elements available to, ah, bolt into a different vehicle. It's the same concept as installing a gasoline-powered crate motor into a classic car, but with electricity and stuff.  This, of course, got us thinking about what we'd stuff the eCrate into. Before we got too ahead of ourselves, however, we discovered that the eCrate battery pack is literally the Bolt EV pack in not only capacity but size and shape. In other words, you need to have enough space in the vehicle to place and/or stuff roughly 60% of a Chevy Bolt's length. It's not a big car, but that's still an awful lot of real estate. There's a reason GM chose to simply plop the pack into the bed and cargo area of old full-size SUVs. Well that, and having a rear suspension beefy enough to handle about 1,000 pounds of batteries.  So after that buzz kill, we still wanted to peruse the GM back catalog for classics we'd love to see transformed into an electric restomod that might be able to swallow all that battery ... maybe ... possibly ... whatever, saws and blow torches exist for a reason.  1971 Buick Riviera Consumer Editor Jeremy Korzeniewski: If you’re going to build an electric conversion, why not do it with style? ThatÂ’s why IÂ’m choosing a 1971-1973 Buick Riviera. You know, the one with the big glass boat-tail rear end that ends in a pointy V. Being a rather large vehicle with a big sloping fastback shape, IÂ’m hoping thereÂ’s enough room in the trunk and back seat to pack in the requisite battery pack. That would likely require cutting away some of the metal bulkhead that supports the rear seatback, but not so much that a wee bit of structural bracing couldnÂ’t shore things up. The big 455-cubic-inch Buick V8 up front will obviously have to go. Remember, this was the 1970s, so despite all that displacement, the Riviera only had around 250 horsepower (depending on the year and the trim level). So the electric motorÂ’s 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque ought to work as an acceptable replacement.   1982 Chevrolet S10 Associate Editor Byron Hurd: OK, so the name "E-10" is already taken by a completely different truck, but let's not let labels get in the way of a fun idea.

GM says EVs are the future — but trucks are going to take it there

Fri, Jan 11 2019

In the PowerPoint deck for the General Motors Capital Markets Day presentation, one of the more disturbing things comes early on, during GM President Mark Reuss' initial remarks, in an area where he is discussing the company's overall strength in trucks. The point being made is that GM has a truck for all and sundry. And there it is, a phrase on a slide that should send chills up the spines of those who still pine for the old Bob Seger "Like a Rock" Silverado ads: "Little bit country. Little bit rock 'n' roll." That's right. Donny and Marie. Somehow the Denis Leary snark in the F-150 ads is all the more appealing. The Capital Markets Day presentation was chock full of observations about electrification and automation (Reuss and CEO Mary Barra both noted that the corporation's vision is one of "Zero Crashes. Zero Emissions. Zero Congestion." Dan Ammann talked about the progress being made at Cruise Automation; Reuss rolled out the plan for an array of electrified vehicles, with a luxury EV and a compact SUV being the "Centroid Entries" for the modular bases of many others). But it is worth noting that there is no getting away from the power of pickups in the U.S. market, as that was the central topic in Chief Financial Officer Dhivya Suryadevara's comments, with "Truck Franchise" being flanked by "Key Financial Priorities" and "Financial Outlook." Clearly, to gloss the old phrase, the truck segment is where the money is. Suryadevra enumerated how the truck segment is significantly different than other types of light vehicles. Among her points: GM, Ford and FCA have more than 90% of market share. The truck parc has been growing and aging over the past 10 years. Customers are fiercely loyal to the segment—as in 70% of truck buyers are truck buyers. A good number of the vehicles are for commercial use (40 percent). Trucks are "less prone to. . .mobility disruption." Trucks offer high margins. Translaton: The segment is one that they're solidly positioned in. There are lots of old trucks on the road that will need to be replaced by new ones. Perhaps buyers may switch from a Sierra to a Canyon, but it will be a truck. If your livelihood depends on that type of vehicle, even if gas prices go up or the economy begins to go south, you're going to stick with it. Most of the country isn't San Francisco, so trucks will continue to be essential. And, well, they're profitable in the extreme.

Race Recap: 2013 Indianapolis 500 better than Bollywood; all the emotion, none of the music [spoilers]

Mon, 27 May 2013

If the 2013 Indy 500 were a movie it would be the one expected to win all the little statues come awards season, and if it were an athlete it would have made spectators watch in awe as it broke record after record. And this kind of talk comes after last year's race was considered one of the best ever - the last lap hijinks in 2012 and Takuma Sato's crash leading to a podium ceremony straight out of a Golden Globes tearjerker.
But this year's race delivered more than anyone expected, from the 250,000 fans to the commentators to the IndyCar series itself and, finally, to the guy who hopped through a two-mile window on Lap 197 to take the lead and keep it until the end.
