this is a dependable truck and runs properly without any drama. it has a block heater which i have never had to use because it starts right up in the winter with just the glow-plugs. two new batteries with warranty cards were added in oct. 2012. has had a documented $2400 in new parts in the 18 months i have owned it (that is not counting any labor) and is now mechanically excellent. that includes a low-mileage replacement transmission--a heavy-duty 4l80e from a dually 3500. with that, the front and rear differentials and transfer case were drained and refilled with amsoil synthetic lubrication, as well as the tranny, and of course, new trans filter. vehicle has an extra-large tru-cool low-pressure-drop auxiliary tranny cooler. the rear-end is a semi-floating 14-bolt unit. vehicle is considered a "heavy half-ton". vehicle frame and underneath sheet-metal have been rust-proofed with the kbs system, and any remaining bare metal has been oiled. brakes stop the vehicle evenly, don't make noise and have plenty of meat left on the pads. the front end, steering and suspension work as they should without any vibration, looseness or pulling to either side. vehicle has a 4" exhaust with stainless magnaflow and resonator. vehicle passes ohio e-check which is just a visual inspection for diesels. there are no dash/check engine lights on at all. have a normal, clear title in hand and it is titled in my name and is my daily driver. as such mileage will increase a bit through the week. vehicle is also advertised for local sale and i reserve the right to end the auction early if that happens. cash on pickup in richfield ohio, 44286, within 3 days of auction end. a nonrefundable $500 deposit by paypal will hold the vehicle for an extra 14 days. sold as is where is, but am willing to assist with shipping if i am paid in cash first, and if you pay for and make the shipping arrangements. the interior is a cloth bench seat without rips but does show signs of wear. boost and egt gauges on a-pillar. the passenger seat power tilt function does not work, but everything else on the vehicle does, including 4wd, heat and air-conditioning. the a/c compressor ha been replaced with a redesigned non-leaking sanden unit. there was a minor accident in 2004 that caused a barely visible dent in right front bumper. there are a couple of nickel-sized areas on the body that are bubbling but no actual rust and the frame is outstanding. truck comes with the studded snow tires mounted on the rear plus a set of 4 matching aluminum rims with bridgestone dueler a/t revos with a lot of tread. the two aluminum toolboxes and integrated rollbar/lightbar also come with the vehicle as well as the 1 key that works for both boxes. the toolboxes are 49.5" apart allowing for you to carry sheets of drywall and plywood in the bed of the truck with only 7" sticking up out over the top of the rollbar. new pump-mounted-driver and relocation kit were just installed this weekend which evened-out the rpm at highway cruising speed. selectable electronically controlled transmission rocker switch that provides for quicker and firmer shifts when towing. no leaks, no vibrations, no problems. thorough maintenance has all been done and this truck needs nothing until you swap the summer rims back on in the spring and change the oil.

'84 MotorWeek Cherokee, Bronco and Blazer comparison indulges your SUV nostalgia

Fri, Jan 16 2015

These days, truck-based, full-frame SUVs are somewhat of a rarity on the auto landscape due to the rapid rise in popularity of easier-driving, car-based crossovers. Although, without the gradually building popularity of these chunky, high-riding vehicles decades ago, it's unlikely that America's roads would be filled with so many CUVs today. In its latest dig into the archives, MotorWeek has found a 1984 comparison test of a trio of these early Sport Utility Wagons, as long-time host John Davis called them, that helped get acceptance of this segment going. This is a red, white and blue test of the SUVs from American automakers at the time and pits the Chevrolet Blazer, Ford Bronco and Jeep Cherokee (specifically in Wagoneer guise) against each other. Driving manners and interior usability are considered in the evaluation, but Motorweek actually takes these vehicles off road, too. Among the bigger revelations is the improvement in on-road ability in the past 30 years. While specific 0-60 times aren't given, all three models take around 10 seconds just to get to around 50 miles per hour in the 500-feet on-ramp acceleration test. Check out this clip to see just how far this segment has progressed in the past three decades or just get a blast of nostalgia from these now vintage models. Read This: Auto Extremist advocates for Corvette as brand with multiple models [w/poll]

Fri, 25 Jan 2013

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette really grinds Peter De Lorenzo's gears. Or, more accurately, the self-anointed Auto Extremist has an issue with what he sees as mismanagement of the legendary sports car by General Motors executives. In a new editorial on his website, De Lorenzo argues it's time to split Corvette off from Chevrolet to create an all-new brand, complete with a model range with at least three new takes on the sports car. Capable of fully leveraging the successes of the Corvette Racing program and brandishing the full might of GM's technical prowess, the Corvette brand would theoretically give Porsche something to sweat over.
Sure, that sounds like a party, but given GM's troubled track record when it comes to launching (let alone managing) brands, we say that's slippery slope that could just as easily end with the whole Corvette franchise in the scrap bin. Either way, the notion is certainly an interesting one. Head over to Auto Extremist to take in the full editorial, and then let us know what you think in Comments. Should GM split off its most storied nameplate?

24 Hours of Le Mans live update part two

Sun, Jun 19 2016

We tasked surfing journalist Rory Parker to watch this year's live stream of the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans. What follows is an experiment to experience the world's greatest endurance race from the perspective of a motorsports novice. Parker lives in Hawaii and can hold his breath longer than he can go without swearing. For Part One, click here. Or you can skip ahead to Part Three here. I write about surfing for a living. If you can call it a living. Basically means I spend my days fucking around and my wife pays for everything. Because she's got a real job that pays well. Brings home the bacon. Very progressive arrangement. Super twenty first century. I run a surf website, beachgrit.com, with two other guys. It's a strange gig. More or less uncensored. Kind of popular. Very good at alienating advertisers. My behavior has cost us a few bucks. I'm terrible at self-censorship. Know there's a line out there, no idea where it lies. I still don't understand any of the technical side. Might as well be astrophysics or something. For contests I do long rambling write ups. They rarely make much sense. Mainly just talk about my life, whatever random thoughts pop into my head. "Can you do something similar for Le Mans?" "Sure, but I know absolutely fuck-all about racing." "That's okay. Just write what you want." "Will do. But you're gonna need to edit my stuff. Probably censor it heavily." So here I am. I spent the last week trying to learn all I can about the sport of endurance racing. But there's only so much you can jam in your head. And I still don't understand any of the technical side. Might as well be astrophysics or something. While I rambled things were happening. Tracy Krohn spun into the gravel on the Forza chicane. #89 is out of the race after an accident I missed. Pegasus racing hit the wall on the Porsche curves. Bashed up front end, in the garage getting fixed. Toyota and Porsche are swapping back and forth in the front three. Ford back in the lead in GTE Pro. #91 Porsche took a stone through the radiator, down two laps. Not good. The wife and I are one of those weird childless couples that spend way too much time caring for the needs of their pet. French bulldog, Mr Eugene Victor Debs. Great little guy. Spent the last four years training him to be obedient and friendly. Nice thing about dogs, when you're sick of dealing with them you can just lock 'em in another room for a few hours. You don't need to worry about paying for college.
