Do you have a trailer? A whole bunch of tools? Brass balls? You're gonna need them.

This truck is not for the faint of heart. I've spent way too much time, money, and energy on it and am giving up. Hopefully you can do better 'cause it's a deserving canidate for fixing up.
I bought it from the original purchaser's son. He added a carb, aluminum radiator, and new wiring harness. It was as close to stock as I've worked on these generation of trucks before. Of course I had to change that.
A 327/TH440/10 bolt drivetrain was fortified by the addition of a 383 with vortec heads.
The front suspension was taken down to the frame rails and the sterring link, control arms, and most of the springs remained stock. Everything is new here, from the steering shaft to the tires. I fabricated relocated shock mounts to add much needed shock travel, and uprgraded to KYB Gasadjust shocks. A kit with 2" drop spindles and C20 power disc brakes make stopping so much nicer. In the back I  flipped the axle, removed 3 springs, and fabricated a "c" channel. I used 3/8 tubing though, so this section is supremely strong.
More new stuff: altenator, battery, water pump, steering pump, comp products crosswind intake, mallory billet distributor, door weatherstripping, monroe rear shocks.
How about some bad news? That 383 I bought off ebay has to cylinders down on compression, this is where I've lost steam. I've disassembled it down to the long block. I've come up with some great excuses, but basically I'm out of time and money.

I travel, but without the internet, you'll have to call and leave a message if you've got any questions. Steve 512-413-8465.
I'll need $500 within 24 hours and the rest in my hand within 7 days, no I won't deliver, that's the deal. Oh yeah, it's sold asis, if you expect some kind of warranty, go away.

Consumer Reports declares most and least loved cars [w/video]

Wed, Dec 3 2014

Consumer Reports is crunching the numbers from its annual owner-satisfaction survey, and part of that process is finding out how attached drivers are to their cars. CR simply asks readers of models up to three years old if they would buy the same vehicle again in light of their entire ownership experience, and tallies the results. After looking at the responses for about 350,000 vehicles, it turns out that people really love a certain California-built, electrically powered luxury sedan. That's right, this year's the overall winner was the Tesla Model S with a whopping 98 percent of owners saying they would purchase another one (the Model S also won this award last year, with 99 percent satisfaction). The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray came in a close second with 95 percent of drivers hoping to park another one in their garage. A few models weren't quite so favored, though. The Nissan Versa Sedan was the least loved model among its owners; a mere 42 percent said that they would purchase another. The aging Jeep Compass didn't do much better, with just 43 percent of drivers willing to buy the softroader again. On average, about 70 percent of owners say they would buy their car again, and only four cars ranked below 50 percent in CR's findings. Check out the video above to see some of the winners and losers in a few of CR's categories. If you're a subscriber, you can check out the full list on its website. Corvette Z06 and Viper TA square off at the strip

Wed, Jan 21 2015

There are many long-standing grudge matches among automobiles: 911 vs GT-R, Mustang vs Camaro, Ferrari vs Lamborghini... but as far as high-end American metal goes, it doesn't get much more legendary than Viper vs 'Vette. So after Chevy released the new Corvette Z06, we knew it was only a matter of time before it would have to square off against the Viper TA. And what better place to pit these two parallel pillars of American performance than on the drag strip? Fortunately that's just what we have here. In one corner, the 2014 Dodge Viper TA, with its 8.4-liter V10 pumping out 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. In the other, the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, the supercharger on its 6.2-liter V8 more than making up for the discrepancy in displacement and cylinder count to produce 650 hp and just as much torque. But numbers don't tell the whole story, so watch the video clip to see which reaches the end of the quarter-mile first. Next-gen Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra may use carbon fiber

Thu, Dec 7 2017

It's been generally accepted that the next generation of full-size GM trucks will use some sort of strong, lightweight material for the beds while retaining steel for the cab. While aluminum seems like the most obvious choice, according to Automotive News, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra will incorporate both aluminum and carbon fiber in their beds. The publication cites sources from within GM, though it seems the introduction of this comparatively exotic material mix is still a few years off. While carbon fiber is both stronger and lighter than steel and aluminum, it takes significantly more time and money to produce, essentially relegating the material to small-volume cars. The main benefit for trucks is the resulting reduction in weight to improve fuel economy without sacrificing the tough, rugged capabilities truck buyers expect. The Ford F-150 made the switch to aluminum for the 2015 model year and it's proved highly successful. It seemed like it was only a matter of time before the competition followed suit. Automotive News says that the next-gen trucks will launch with aluminum beds and that it will take a couple of years before we'll see any carbon fiber incorporated into the design. Even then, only look for the composite material on higher-trim models, with a trickle down to lower-spec trucks possible further in the future. In 2011, GM announced it was working with Japan-based Teijin Limited on a carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic. There's a good chance that material's introduction will be on trucks.
