I am offering for sale my 1972 Chevrolet C10 big block pickup (long bed). It is factory black with the original 400 big block motor complete and untouched - even has the original smog pump in place. It still has the original 3 speed manual transmission (three on the tree). It has power brakes (disc brakes in front), rear coil suspension, manual steering, and no AC. It has all the cool patina that everybody is looking for these days. Paint is original though the tailgate may have been sprayed at some point.  Everything works . . . the original AM radio, dash gauges and lights, heater, turn signals, etc.  It has good glass all around.  Cosmetically, I installed a new dash pad and had the seat professionally reupholstered with new foam, and installed new seat belts. Mechanically, it has new rear brakes, a new Bosch battery, new windshield wipers, and runs and stops well. Tires are decent. Bed has a bed liner in it.  It does have the usual rust in the rockers, cab corners, and cab floor but it has been coated in POR-15 so there's no problem. Even with the patina, everything is clean and serviceable - heck, my wife will even ride with me in the truck.  It goes down the highway just fine.

The truck is 40 years old and does have some quirks.  The gas cap can be fidgety to get on and off.  The right turn signal indicator light in the dash doesn't always come on but the outside signals do work correctly.  I replaced all the bulbs in the dash along with the printed circuit.  The gas gauge sometimes gets squirelly . . . I did replace the gauge and the sending unit.  Heater works but the air flow isn't super strong.  The truck was missing a couple pieces of trim which I replaced.  I think that's all the bugs that I am aware of.  I'm still tinkering with these little things . . . just wanted to call them out for full disclosure.

Please know what you are bidding on.  This is a 40 year old vintage truck as described.  Do not expect a pristine, perfect paint, Barrett-Jackson truck.  Buy this truck because it's an original big block truck that has the look and runs good.

This was a one owner truck when I bought it . . . I still have some of the documents and the Bible dated 1972 that the owner kept in the glove box of the truck since new. It could (should) be somebody's daily driver.  This truck has the right look and the right patina . . . you could drive this truck for ten years and still sell it for more than you paid for it.  Title is clear and in my name.  I am happy to work with your shipper.  Thanks for looking!

Junkyard Gem: 1980 Chevrolet LUV Mikado

Sat, Oct 9 2021

During the 1970s and into the 1980s, each member of the Detroit Big Three imported Japanese small pickups and sold them with Ford (Mazda Proceed), Dodge/Plymouth (Mitsubishi Forte), or Chevrolet (Isuzu Faster) badges here. Ford developed the Ranger and killed the Courier for 1983 (though Americans could still buy the Mazda-badged version all the way through 1993), while The General axed the LUV after the S-10 debuted in the 1982 model year. Isuzu sold the same truck as the P'up through 1987, though, and we might as well follow up our recent P'up Junkyard Gem with its LUV predecessor. LUV stood for Light Utility Vehicle, and I've managed to spot a handful in the boneyards over the years. This one now resides in a yard in northeastern Colorado. The Mikado trim package included striped seat upholstery and a sporty steering wheel, plus these cool dash badges. As far as I can tell, no LUV Mikado advertising featured any Gilbert and Sullivan tunes. This one is fairly rusty for Front Range Colorado, and it has endured a bed swap from some other small truck. The engine is the 75-horse Isuzu 1.8-liter. Members of this engine family went into everything from Chevy Chevettes to Isuzu Troopers in the United States. Very unusually for a small pickup during the Malaise Era, this one has a luxurious automatic transmission. Acceleration must have been a leisurely affair in this truck. Air conditioning? Unheard of! Someone stuck every one of their lunchtime apple stickers on the driver's door. After 41 years of work, this truck is done. Come on strong in a LUV of your own!

Chevy's 6.6-liter Duramax is pretty much all new

Thu, Sep 29 2016

To say there's a heated battle in heavy-duty pickups is an understatement, with Chevrolet, Ford, and Ram constantly trading blows of increased torque, horsepower, and towing capacity. The latest salvo is the revised, more powerful turbo diesel 6.6-liter Duramax V8 in the 2017 Chevy Silverado. It has 910 pound-feet of torque, an increase of 145, putting it nearly level with the Ford Super Duty. Here's a closer look at where those gains come from. How exactly did Chevrolet add all that torque plus 48 horsepower? The automaker essentially took a fine-tooth comb to the entire engine. Chevy says it changed 90 percent of the V8, and the cumulative effect of those small changes adds up to big increases. As you might guess, the turbocharger is updated. The larger unit features electric actuation of the variable nozzle turbine (VNT), and what Chevy calls a double axle cartridge mechanism that separates the VNT moving parts from the housing. That helps with heat performance as well, with a claim that the exhaust side of the turbo can run continuously up to 1,436 degrees Fahrenheit. Helping that cause are six exhaust gaskets made of Inconel - an nickel alloy that contains chromium and iron – and upgraded stainless steel for the exhaust manifold. Despite having the same cast iron cylinder block, albeit with some minor enhancements, the engine has new cylinder heads, pistons, piston pins, connecting rods, and crankshaft, which have all been upgraded to handle 20 percent higher cylinder pressures. Alongside the increase in pressure, Chevrolet also increased the cylinder head's structure with a honeycomb design. The pattern features high-strength aluminum with dual layer water jackets that not only improve strength, but also optimize water flow for better cooling. For 2017, the cylinder head also benefits from integrated plenum that aids the engine in getting more air under heavy loads. The cylinder head isn't the only component to get a minor update, as the pistons have a larger diameter pin for improved oil flow. The same detailed improvements has been bestowed to the humble connecting rods (second in our hearts only to the inanimate carbon rod). The new design has the bolts oriented roughly 45-degrees to the rod instead of parallel. The angle split design, as it's called allows for easier passage through the cylinder.

Some 2012-13 Chevy Volts may not have enough battery coolant

Mon, Jun 23 2014

The 2012 and 2013 model year Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in vehicle may have a battery glitch caused by low coolant levels. No recall has been issued and General Motors is taking care of the issue at no cost to drivers. Some of the affected Volts may have lower-than-advisable coolant levels because of some pesky air pockets in the car's cooling circuit. When the coolant levels get too low, the charging system for the battery powering the car's onboard generator (i.e. the Rechargeable Energy Storage System, or the RESS) may be shut down, turning one's Volt into a run-of-the-mill gas-powered car, and a pricey one at that. The Car Connection says GM is advising owners of the '12 and '13 Volts to contact their local Chevy dealer for a free fix. GM representatives didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from AutoblogGreen for more details. We believe this is a separate issue than the one that brought 8,000 Volts back to the dealers for a battery coolant fix, what GM called a "voluntary customer satisfaction effort," a few years ago. General Motors sold 23,094 Chevy Volts last year after selling 23,461 Volts in 2012, so that fix-it list may get fairly lengthy. Check out a GM-Volt.com user thread related to this issue here. *UPDATE: Chevrolet spokesman Randy Fox confirmed in an e-mail to AutoblogGreen that the company issued a service bulletin to dealers that they may need to top off coolant levels on certain Volts because of the issue, and that the vehicle will "return to normal charging operation" once that's done.
