Up for auction is a 1970 Chevrolet Blazer a buddy and I picked up a couple of years ago in Fayette County, PA.  The truck had been sitting for a long time and was last inspected in 1998.  It looked as though the previous owner started a restoration and stopped after realizing he was in over his head.  We winched her on a car hauler and brought her home.  The previous owner had picked up a new soft top and rail system and a poly fuel cell to replace the leaking stocker.  It has a set of white wagon wheels and is in desperate need of tires.  The tires on it hold air for a while, but are pretty worn and weather checked. The front left has a spare tire on it because it made for easier loading and unloading from the car hauler.

Once we got her home I pulled the stock intake, carb, distributor, wires, and plugs.  I replaced the plugs, installed some Accel plug wires, and a HEI distributor.  I swapped the cast iron two barrel intake for an aluminum Edelbrock four barrel intake. The carb is a 600 CFM, electric choke Edelbrock.  The valve covers, thermostat housing, and air cleaner are all Edelbrock as well.  Once the intake was buttoned up, we hooked up a temporary fuel cell and bumped it over to see where the timing was hitting.  The truck fired right up and settled into an idle.  As long as the battery is charged, that's all you have to do.  Just bump the key and it fires right up every time....way better than my '79 does!

The transmission is a manual, three speed on the column that shifts perfectly.  Our plan was to remove the column shift and install an automatic for ease of use.  The passenger and rear sets are in good shape, but the driver's seat needs some attention.  There's a removable GMC center console as well as the push bar mounted on the front bumper.

The lights, gauges, and indicators all work as they should and the wiring looks good save the switch that was installed for a set of off road lights on the push bar.  The switch and lights were removed.  There is no stereo, but the dash is otherwise in great shape.

It had been a while since either of us had run a three speed, but once familiarized we had no problem navigating all over the property with the Blazer in 2 and 4 wheel drive.

As stated, there is a new poly fuel cell in the rear that needs installed as well as an aftermarket soft top.  We didn't attempt to install either as we used the Blazer for running around the property.

That was pretty much all the good, so I'll move on to the not so good.  The body is in need of extensive repair.  I could ramble on about all of the parts that have rust, but I'll let the pics do the talking.  The frame has scaling, but only appears to have one hold on the side of the c channel above the left rear shock mount.

Below you'll find a link to a short video of us firing her up.  The idle is a bit high as the choke isn't hooked up.

The truck will come with the stock intake, manifold, carb, and some miscellaneous spare parts.  The truck can be driven on to a trailer for transport.

Drop me a line with any questions and I'll do my best to answer them.  This is a no reserve auction for a good old classic truck that needs a new home!

10 of 18 midsize SUVs earn 'good' IIHS side impact safety rating

Wed, May 18 2022

It's not terribly surprising that midsize SUVs earned better safety ratings than small SUVs in the latest side-impact tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Just how much better they scored, on the other hand, certainly raises an eyebrow. Ten out of 18 midsize SUVs earned the highest rating of 'good' in the stringent new test, altered for vehicles starting with the 2020 model year with a heavier barrier (4,200 pounds) that moves at a higher speed (37 miles per hour) and is fitted with a hard honeycomb frontal structure. By way of contrast, just one out of of 20 small SUVs earned a 'good' score.  SUVs that receiving 'good' scores were the Ford Explorer, Infiniti QX60, Lincoln Aviator, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, Volkswagen Atlas, Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport and Volkswagen ID.4. For EV fans, it's worth noting the ID.4 was the only electric vehicle included in the test. The Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse scraped away with 'acceptable' ratings while the Honda Passport, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Jeep Wrangler 4-door, Kia Telluride and Nissan Murano were deemed merely 'marginal' in the tough new test. Only two models — the Mazda CX-9 and Volkswagen ID.4 — earned a "Good" rating in every test category.  Interestingly, the Jeep Wrangler would have scored a 'good' rating if it were equipped with side airbags for the rear seating positions. It would likely be an engineering challenge to equip its removable top and/or doors with airbags, but the lack of that safety feature allowed the head of the rear passenger dummy to hit the vertical support of the top. Otherwise, the Wrangler scored good ratings across the board. The new Ford Bronco, which makes more allowances for side-impact safety, has not yet been tested.  The popular Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride SUVs stand out in the test with 'poor' ratings for driver pelvis injuries. The Nissan Murano, a vehicle last redesigned for the 2015 model year, was the only vehicle tested that received a 'poor' rating for its structure and safety cage. Videos of the tests of 12 of these 18 SUVs can be found on the IIHS' YouTube page. Cars with the most reckless drivers are full of surprises

Wed, Oct 13 2021

Insurify is a site for comparing auto insurance quotes. Because insurance shoppers need to submit information like the vehicles they're driving and the infractions they've compiled while driving those vehicles, Insurify has quite the database of correlations tying certain models to a habit of breaking certain laws. When the site's data analysts decided to compile a list of the top ten models for reckless driving citations in the decade from 2010 to 2019, the ranking contained a few wild entries. The Dodge Challenger making the countdown will surprise precisely zero people. But the Saturn L200? First, a definition: USLegal.com defines reckless driving as "driving with a willful or wanton disregard for safety. It is the operation of an automobile under such circumstances and in such a manner as to show a willful or reckless disregard of consequences." So this list is a caution about particular drivers more than the cars. For a baseline, according to Insurify data, for any random model, 15 out of 10,000 people who drive that model have picked up one citation for reckless driving. Back to that Challenger, then. No shocker for being here, but it's actually number 10, with 44 out of 10,000 Challenger drivers nabbed for a willful disregard of consequences on the road. That's better than the first surprise entry, the Saturn L200, a sedan only on sale for six years, with the least horsepower on the list, and out of production since 2005. The data set put drivers of GM's extraterrestrial sedan at 45 reckless pilots per 10,000 drivers. There are two pickups on the list, the only modern one being the Ram 1500 at eighth, with a rate of 46 in 10,000. Somehow, drivers of the third-best-selling pickup in the U.S. outrun the overwhelming numerical superiority of the best-selling vehicle in the States, the Ford F-150. The other pickup is the Chevrolet K1500 at number five, with a rate of 56 in 10,000. This is not only the oldest vehicle on the list, it went out of production in 2002, before any other vehicle on the list. Between the trucks, the Volkswagen CC slotted in at seven with 47 in 10,000 reckless driving chits, the Cadillac ATS slipped into sixth with 48 in 10,000.  The top four is a bag of unexpected. The Nissan 370Z is the first hardcore sports car on the list at number four, with 61 in 10,000 Z drivers flaunting their Fairladys in the face of Johnny Law.

2016 Lamborghini Huracan at the Horse Thief Mile | AutoblogVR

Tue, Sep 13 2016

AutoblogVR returns to the Horse Thief Mile in the Mojave Desert to put the Lamborghini Huracan to the test. It's everything we want a modern supercar to be: Powerful, striking in appearance, and a riot to drive. But does it live up to Lamborghini's unique performance heritage? Senior Editor Greg Migliore reviews the Huracan on Horse Thief's unyielding curves and elevation changes to find out. Meanwhile, Autoblog Editor-in-Chief Mike Austin reviews a different kind of performance car – the Chevy SS at the IndyCar circuit on Detroit's Belle Isle. He's ably assisted by ace driver Simon Pagenaud. You must watch his hot lap! The SS is old-school V8 American muscle wrapped in Australian design and engineering. This AutoblogVR segment also launches on the app Sept. 13, and the teaser follows the Huracan preview above. Each week, new episodes will launch on the AutoblogVR App. We'll preview them here on Autoblog, but for the full immersive experience, head over to the app, which you can download for free from the App store and Google Play.
