SELLER REMARKS |
|
Great car, great colors, with a bit of a sting that's more Camaro than '50s plush cruiser, that's this 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air hardtop. With a potent 350 under the hood, a 4-speed transmission, and that fantastic Bel Air look, this is one of the finest '57s we've seen in a long, long time.
When most folks picture a '57 Chevy, I'll bet a car just like this Tuxedo Black hardtop is what they imagine. Beautifully restored to 100 % stock condition, the bodywork is quite good with a lot of extra effort spent blocking and sanding the panels, so everything is straight and shines brilliantly. Sure, it's about fifty times shinier than any 1957 paint, but that's the whole point with a glossy black Bel Air resto-mod, right? Much of the chrome, and there's a lot of it, is new, including the Bel Air anodized side panels, fresh bumpers, and the gold anodized grille. Front and rear windshields are new, there's fresh weather-stripping throughout the car, and the builder wisely resisted the urge to shave, chop, or otherwise modify the timeless design. Accessory fender skirts make it look long and low, but are totally removable (as you can see in our photos) so if you don't like 'em, you don't have to keep 'em. But from the outside, this car merely looks like a beautifully restored Bel Air.
Inside, that theme continues with brand new red and black upholstery, correct pile carpet, and reproduction door panels. The entire dash has been refinished with the stock instruments fully restored and augmented by a vintage Sun Super Tach strapped to the steering column. It might be easier to say what isn't new than to list everything that has been recently replaced, but this car is so thoroughly built that the clock still keeps excellent time and the original AM radio was converted to FM operation to keep it looking factory-correct. Modifications were kept to a minimum, but it's hard to avoid noticing that white Hurst cue ball knob and shifter atop the 4-speed manual transmission, which gives this Bel Air a bit of an attitude. Even the trunk was treated to a full restoration, with a correct rubber mat and even a brand new bias-ply spare tire and complete jack assembly.
The whole point of a resto-mod like this is to give a beautiful old car a modern soul, and that's exactly what has happened here. It includes a custom-built 350 fortified with an Edelbrock dual quad intake with a pair of 4-barrel carbs on top, as well as all-new accessories, so it runs like a new car. Long-tube headers wear a ceramic coating for longevity, and exhale into a great-sounding dual exhaust system that's subtle but authoritative thanks to period glasspack-style mufflers. The aforementioned 4-speed manual transmission feeds the stock '57 rear end, which rides on leaf springs and lowering blocks to give it a bit of a rake. Stock factory hubcaps look dazzling inside a set of 7.50-14 wide whites, further blurring the line between "resto" and "mod," and making this car look as good as it runs.
This Bel Air is everything you'd hope your next '57 Chevy would be. Fast, fun, and downright gorgeous, there are no disappointments here. Call today!

What Mother Earth devoured, Chevrolet plans to resurrect. The carmaker said Thursday it will oversee restoration of the classic cars swallowed by a huge sinkhole beneath the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky. General Motors Design in Warren, Mich., will manage the painstaking work to repair the eight prize vehicles, the automaker said Thursday. The cars were consumed when the earth opened up early Wednesday beneath a display area when the museum in Bowling Green, Ky., was closed. No injuries were reported. The museum was open Thursday except for the area where the sinkhole occurred. Mark Reuss, GM's head of global product development, said the damaged vehicles rank as "some of the most significant in automotive history." "There can only be one 1-millionth Corvette ever built," he said, referring to one of the damaged cars. "We want to ensure as many of the damaged cars are restored as possible so fans from around the world can enjoy them." Just how the cars will be pulled out of the ground remains to be seen, said museum executive director Wendell Strode. The local fire department estimated the hole is about 40 feet across and 25 to 30 feet deep. The hole opened beneath part of the museum's domed section. "We feel pretty confident that most of the cars can be extracted," Strode said Thursday. "And we hope and believe that with just a little bit of luck, that all eight cars can be extracted and be part of the restoration." Chevrolet spokesman Monte Doran said some of the cars look to be in good shape, while others are buried in rubble. "It will likely be several weeks until we can get the cars out and assessed," he said. The GM Design team has helped restore other historic cars, but the Corvette project looks to be its biggest, he said. "These Corvettes are part of our history, and they want them restored properly," Strode said. "We're thrilled they're doing this." The cars looked like toys as they plunged into the hole, piled in a heap amid dirt and concrete fragments. The museum owns six of the cars while two - a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder and a 2009 ZR1 Blue Devil - are on loan from General Motors. The other cars damaged were a 1962 black Corvette, a 1984 PPG Pace Car, a 1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette, a 1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette, a 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette and a 2009 white 1.5 Millionth Corvette. Pictures of the sinkhole showed a collapsed section of floor with multiple cars visible inside the hole.

While this year marks 60 years of the Chevrolet Corvette, the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance focused on one of the coupe's most sought after models, the 1963 Sting Ray. General Motors design boss Ed Welburn was on hand to show off the all-new C7 Corvette, but even the hard-edged styling of the 2014 Stingray couldn't take away from the beautiful 1963 models sitting out on the field.
In addition to the original Sting Ray and the 1959 Sting Ray Concept, some of the other classic 'Vettes included "Big Tank" racecars, an interesting cutaway coupe, a right-hand-drive Z06 and the attention-grabbing 1963 Corvette Rondine by Pininfarina. Another impressive Corvette was the 1964 Corvette XP-819 rear-engine prototype. Owner Mike Yager had the car finished as a driving chassis for this year's show, but promises the car will be back to its original glory in time for next year's event.
