1953 Chevrolet Bel Air 2 Dr. Hardtop Sport Coupe Runs Great Original Patina on 2040-cars
Eastlake, Ohio, United States
Here's a neat little '53 Chevy Bel Air Sport Coupe 2 Dr. Hardtop that I had purchased from Iowa over 2 years ago, have enjoyed, run it's course with me and am now selling to make a little more room around here and let someone else enjoy it. Great for summer cruisin' as is and does draw a lot of attention, thumbs up and compliments or would be a fine candidate for a full restoration. With the windows all down almost like driving a convertible. Mechanically EXCELLENT and fun and comfortable to drive, get in it and go with it's 235 6 cylinder and three speed transmission with column shift [factory]. The mileage is original, having sat for about 30 years in Iowa before my purchase. Has a nice patina feel, original paint still on the roof [and no dents] and what's left of the original Sun Gold paint on the body. All the glass is good except the driver's side door glass which has some cracks in it and all the windows roll up and down just fine. The seats are nice and firm and have NOS '50's Fiesta Seat Covers on them and this '53 has a BEAUTIFUL original steering wheel. The carpeting is new repo with new padding and clutch and brake pedal pads. The door panels as you can see need work but all the trim is there, the backs are better than the fronts, the headliner is original leather-like with one hole over the passenger side visor. I have added a few new goodies like the rare front wing and rear accessory bumper guards, an NOS front center grill bar, better '50's style rocket side mirrors since pictures taken last summer [all photos have been taken within the last 6 months] and a chrome valve cover - an original one with new gasket goes with the car, see pictures of parts that go with it and there are quite a few [a set of original '53 steel 15" wheels, hubcaps, fender skirts, a nicer upper grill molding, new windshield gaskets, more, even the OEM bumper jack]. LOTS of new parts installed and used, NOS and NOSR such as Kingpins, stabilizer bar pins and bushings, front wheel bearings, pair of new rear leaf springs, voltage regulator, $350 radiator, oil filter canister cleaned out with new filter, new stock Aluminized complete exhaust system including muffler, 4 shocks, emblems, exhaust, gas tank & sending unit, brakes [Master Cylinder most notably], hoses, battery and cables, OEM NOS rear trunk ornament, much more. Original Oil Bath Air Cleaner has been cleaned, wired and painted with a new decal. Does not burn oil [or at least very little], no unusual noises and transmission and clutch work great, no shifting problems at all. 2 things that need attention are a front wheel alignment [some wear starting on the inside of the front tires but no pulling or such] and if the car has been sitting for a few days the carb needs primed [it was new/rebuilt when I put it on but apparently the accelerator pump needs replaced again]. The fuel pump is new, the ignition parts are all new [cap, points, rotor, condenser, wires, new coil and plugs], it has been correctly timed, the motor and cooling system has been flushed completely and new anti-freeze added. The headlights, taillights, brake lights, parking lights, turn signals, wipers, horns, speedometer, all gauges [some are NOS] all work [the heater does not, have bypassed the connection to the heater core]. Is equipped with optional wiper squirters but I don't have them hooked up [the bag and pump are still there with hoses and the instrument lights never worked, it may need a new light switch]. Original 6 volt system and it works fine, no problems. Frame is great, has surface rust only just one riveted on brace up front that I know of has packed-dirt through rust-out and they repo that one, too. The 2 front floor pans have been repaired I would say back in the 60's and they did a nice job for what it is. Have a rust-free set of straight dry California front fenders that are the same color as the Sun Gold and have patina to match that go with it, if put on would match right in with the existing paint scheme [fenders on car aren't real bad but have small pin holes above headlights and a dent on the driver's side ones' forward well lip, the California fenders are really nice!]. Doors are straight and solid. Any panels this car needs [forward inner wheel wells rotted, lower rear quarters of which there are 2 panels included with the parts that go, the rocker panels are a little weak inside and out but again, new panels included with the parts lot and trunk tail pan along the back pan] are now all reproduced. Trunk floor is basically good, no broken/cracked shock tower mounts up near the deck. The spare tire well is rusted through at the bottom but not obliterated. Has vintage '60's 14" Chrome reverse Wheels on it with Radial T/A's with less than 1,000 miles on them. Please feel free to ask any questions and view all photos carefully, especially before buying as all sales are final, no returns, warranties or guarantees- this running, driving 60+ year old Chevy Bel Air Coupe is sold AS IS. I have over 70 more detailed photos that can be emailed to you if you are a serious buyer [I AM FIRM at the price of $6,500 unless you are willing to pay $6,200 for the '53 Chevy with just the extra parts pictured in the listing WITHOUT the 2 front California Fenders mentioned above]. A $500 non-refundable Pay Pal deposit is due immediate when hitting the Buy It Now button to purchase the '53 Chevy and all the parts that go with it with the balance being due within 7 days of listing's end, preferably by wire transfer, cash on pick-up or if a bank cashier's check car, title and parts will not be released until check has cleared. I can store the car for up to 30 days in my garage if you need time to arrange pick-up as long as vehicle is paid for as mentioned within 7 days. License plates, front Devil floor mats and Grandpa Munster figure on the dash do not go with car! Am not interested in any trades and thanks to those who expressed interest in buying all the extra parts separately but they all go with the car. We are located about 15 miles east of Cleveland, Ohio with easy access from Rt. 90 and we can assist with loading if necessary. I do know of a reputable transporter located in Indiana who at last call charged about $1 per loaded mile, if interested I can pass on that information. Title is a clear Ohio title in my name, all numbers match with no problems and I will put down the actual selling price on it when other information of buyer's entered. You are more than welcome to inspect the vehicle and parts included in this sale before buying if you so desire, just let me know to arrange an appointment. Happy to deal WORLDWIDE or INTERNATIONALLY if you can arrange your own transport within the United States to your shipping port. Please contact me first if you plan on purchasing this car. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time as the car is being made available for sale elsewhere. Car runs great and will drive up on any trailer or hauler. If you're not too far away the car would make the trip running although with the quick & high gears and the smaller 14" wheels and tires in the back 55-60 mph is about your max. Thanks much for looking! |

Question of the Day: What's the most irritating car name?
Wed, Mar 9 2016You hear a lot about how the Chevrolet Nova was a sales flop in Mexico because "No va" means "it doesn't go" in Spanish; in fact, the Nova sold pretty well south of the border, and in any case most Spanish-speakers know that "Nova" means "new" in Latin and Portuguese. However, General Motors doesn't deserve to be let off the hook for bad car names, because the Oldsmobile Achieva— no doubt inspired by the excruciating "coffee achievers" ads of the 1980s— scrapes the biggest fingernails down the screechiest chalkboard in the US-market car-name world. That is, unless you think Daihatsu's incomprehensible choice of Charade was worse. Meanwhile, Japanese car buyers could get machines with cool names like Mazda Bongo Friendee or Honda Life Dunk. It's just not fair! So, what car name drives you the craziest? Related Video: Auto News Design/Style Chevrolet Honda Mazda Daihatsu Automotive History questions car names
Weekly Recap: Geneva's splendor reflects growing demand for ultra-luxury cars
Sat, Mar 7 2015Geneva is one of the most glittering auto shows in the world, but the list of high-powered and bespoke luxury cars was decadent this year even by the rich standards of the Swiss exhibition. It's great for enthusiasts to revel in the flame-throwing Aston Martin Vulcan, the racing-inspired elegance of the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 concept and the insane performance of the Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce, but there's a reason for all of this opulence: the luxury market is big business. And it's growing. IHS Automotive forecasts that so-called ultra-premium sales will nearly triple this decade from 123,000 to 353,000 units around the world. The estimate includes brands like Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari and Rolls-Royce, but doesn't count BMW, Mercedes and Audi, which offer less expensive models in addition to their high-end flagships. Though IHS includes Porsche and its relatively large volume in the study, the ultra-premium segment is still set grow at about the same rate, even without the German automaker's figures. So what is propelling all of this growth in the most expensive segment of the auto industry? Put simply, there's more rich people. IHS Automotive principal analyst Tim Urquhart pointed to economic expansion in China, market recovery in the United States and a surge in the lucrative technology sector as contributing factors. This dovetails with a research report by UK-based Oxfam, an international relief organization, which found the world's richest one-percent owned 48 percent of global wealth in 2014, and it's expected to increase to more than 50 percent by 2016. View 17 Photos Carmakers are moving quickly to capitalize with new products, expanding their portfolios with low-volume speedsters like the 800-hp V12 Vulcan at Geneva, and plans to enter new segments, like Rolls-Royce's strategy to make an SUV. "Ultra-premium carmakers are looking to explore ways of growing their product offerings, and thus their bottom lines, in this most potentially profitable of segments," Urquhart wrote in a report on the Geneva show. In a nutshell, there are more choices for people with more money. It's a good time to have expensive taste. Other News & Notes 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata production launches It won't be long now. Race Recap: 2013 Twelve Hours of Sebring, cakewalk up front, grindfest out back [w/spoilers]
Tue, 19 Mar 2013This year's 12 Hours of Sebring wasn't exactly a foregone conclusion because we're still talking about racing, and anything can happen when the speeds are as high as the adrenaline and the desire. But we're still talking about Audi bringing it's two top-spec racers - and its huge budget and its nearly neurotic attention to detail - to a race that it uses as a test bed for The 24 Hours of Le Mans and as a way to open the endurance racing season with a victory.
Besides, 12 hours is a long time, especially at Sebring, and things didn't go all Audi's way. On top of that, although it was a pretty quiet race, behind the Audis things got even grimier, with plenty of battles, plenty of mechanical issues, and the new BMW Z4 GTE and Viper GTS-R being race tested. Oh, and that brand new chromed-out DeltaWing...
