1995 Chevrolet Astro Van Converted Campervan More Photos: http://imgur.com/a/wsYh8#0 This great van has been lovingly converted into a live-in camper van, great for weekending or even long-term camping. We have been living in it for 5 months and loving it, traveling the country. We are heading back to Australia and looking for someone else who wants a great experience in our little camper. I bought the van on eBay last year and converted it to a campervan myself. It has been a great little machine and has given us very few problems. The car itself has 222,500 miles on it and it has been very well maintained. All of the front suspension has just been replaced at a cost of about $900. As well, the radiator, Air Conditioning lines, brake drums, rotors and bearings have also just been replaced at a cost of about $700. The car is in great shape and has always been cared for. There are some cosmetic paint chips off the front of the car as well as a few small spots on the side of the car but NO RUST! The tires are only 6 months old and have about 18,000 miles on them. There was also a fuel system cleaning and coolant flush & hose replacement done 6 months ago. The ignition battery was also replaced and is only 4 months old. It has a nice comfortable full bed in the back and we are happy to include bedding with that. The bed is built up on a wooden platform so you have a lot of storage underneath the bed. Storage is accessible from the door side and the back. It also includes long storage bins that slide under the bed which are great for long term clothing or pantry storage. There are also two smaller storage bins for dishes and pots/pans as well as food. It comes with all the pots & pans you'll need for camping (maybe even more than you need!) as well as a two-burner propane stove and a 20lb propane tank. Fire extinguisher included as well, though we haven't used it - thankfully! - it's always good to have. Stove originally $110, Propane tank $35 and it has about 2 gallons in it. Fire extinguisher $35. Here are all the pots, pans, dishes and silverware included: 1 large pan with lid, 1 medium pot with strainer lid, 4 plates, 2 small bowls, 1 medium bowl, 4 large square tupperware, 3 small round tupperware, 1 plastic strainer, 1 cutting board, 1 turner/spatula, 1 cooking spoon, 1 chef's knife, 1 bread knife, 4 steak knives, 2 butter knives, 4 forks, 3 large spoons, 2 small spoons, 1 soup ladle, 1 cheese grater, 1 pasta spoon, 1 peeler, & 1 can opener. There is additional storage above the driving seats - two small cubbies good for books or other things accessible from the bed, as well as a larger storage area in the center which we have been using for clothing. The van also includes a black-out curtain which runs across between the bed section and the driving seats. Each window in the rear has custom-cut 1/2" insulation panels which can be easily put in place. The whole effect is good for privacy and keeping the temperature in the van comfortable. There is also a 250Ah 12V secondary battery system that charges from the 80A alternator and then is isolated away from the ignition system so that your ignition battery is always protected from being discharged by the secondary battery system. There are two 12V outlets in the rear of the van that can support up to 15A DC appliances. (Battery originally $450, Outlets $6) As well, the 2A LED lighting runs from the secondary battery and is dimmable using its small switch. (Originally $19) A 33 quart fridge is also included (20" x 14" x 16") which runs directly off the secondary battery using a dedicated 12V outlet in the front of the car. The fridge can also be switched to keep food hot if needed. (Originally $180) As well, there is a 350W 120V DC/AC Inverter connected directly to the secondary battery that can be used to charge laptops/phones/cameras, other small AC appliances (under 350W peak). (Originally $35) There is also a 12V adapter that can be used with the inverter to connect to the ignition battery when driving if the secondary battery is discharged. There are 3 appliances that can be connected to the 12V outlets in the rear: a 48W heated blanket for the cold nights, a 10W fan for the hot nights, and a 100W electric kettle for heating water for cooking, tea or coffee. (Heated Blanket originally $35) (Electric Kettle originally $28) It also includes a 40-cup BritaMAX household water filter with a brand new filter. (Originally $35) There is also a Propane and Carbon Monoxide detector wired directly to the battery, so you are safe from accidental leaks or carbon monoxide issues. (Originally $65) Also includes a first aid kit and a large USA/Canada/Mexico road atlas. All the items included with the van were bought new 5 months ago so they have only minimal wear on them. I'm sure there will be more things I can throw in that I've forgotten to put in the listing. Shipping costs will vary depending on where you are located. I am located in Sarasota, FL. Please use the shipping estimator through ebay to determine shipping or contact me to make plans to pick up the van. Shipping is flexible so please contact me with any questions. Race Recap: 2013 Twelve Hours of Sebring, cakewalk up front, grindfest out back [w/spoilers]
Tue, 19 Mar 2013This year's 12 Hours of Sebring wasn't exactly a foregone conclusion because we're still talking about racing, and anything can happen when the speeds are as high as the adrenaline and the desire. But we're still talking about Audi bringing it's two top-spec racers - and its huge budget and its nearly neurotic attention to detail - to a race that it uses as a test bed for The 24 Hours of Le Mans and as a way to open the endurance racing season with a victory.
Besides, 12 hours is a long time, especially at Sebring, and things didn't go all Audi's way. On top of that, although it was a pretty quiet race, behind the Audis things got even grimier, with plenty of battles, plenty of mechanical issues, and the new BMW Z4 GTE and Viper GTS-R being race tested. Oh, and that brand new chromed-out DeltaWing...
The USPS needs 180,000 new delivery vehicles, automakers gearing up to bid
Wed, Feb 18 2015Winning the New York City Taxi of Tomorrow tender was a huge prize for Nissan, even though the company is still working through the process of claiming its prize. The United States Postal Service has begun the process to take bids for a new delivery vehicle to replace the all-too-familiar Grumman Long Life Vehicle, and that will be a much larger plum for the automaker who wins it, perhaps worth more than six billion dollars. The Grumman LLV is an aluminum body covering a Chevrolet S-10 pickup chassis and General Motors' Iron Duke four-cylinder engine. The USPS bought them from 1987 to 1994, and the 163,000 of them still in service are a monumental drain on postal resources: they get roughly ten miles to the gallon instead of the quoted 16 mpg, drink up more than $530 million in fuel each year, and their constant repair needs like the balky sliding door and leaky windshields have led the service to increase the annual maintenance budget from $100 million to $500 million. A seat belt is about as modern as it gets for safety technology, and the USPS says that assuming things stay the same, it can't afford to run them beyond 2017. Last year it put out two triage requests for proposals seeking 10,000 new chassis and drivetrains for the Grumman and 10,000 new vehicles. The LLV is also too small for the modern mail system in which package delivery is growing and letter delivery is declining. The service says it doesn't have a fixed idea of the ideal "next-generation delivery vehicles," but it listed a number of requirements in its initial request and is open to any proposal. Carriers have some suggestions, though, saying they want better cupholders, sun visors that they can stuff letters behind, a driver's compartment free of slits that can swallow mail, and a backup camera. The request for information sent to automakers pegs the tender at 180,000 vehicles that would cost between $25,000 and $35,000 apiece, and it will hold a conference on February 18 to answer questions about the contract. GM is the only domestic maker to avow an interest, while Ford and Fiat-Chrysler have remained cagey. Yet with a possible $6.3 billion up for grabs and some new vans for sale that would be advertised on every block in the country, we have a feeling everyone will be listening closely come February 18. We also have a feeling the LeMons series is going to be flooded with Grummans come 2017. News Source: Wall Street Journal, Automotive News - sub.
GM announces 3 new recalls affecting 1.7M vehicles in North America [w/video]
Mon, Mar 17 2014Still embroiled in the ongoing ignition switch recall, General Motors announced today three more discrete recalls, affecting a grand total of 1,546,900 vehicles in the US. The Detroit News reports that some 1.7 million vehicles are affected overall in North America. The first and largest of the trio of new recalls concerns some 1.18-million Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia crossovers from the 2008-2013 model years, Chevrolet Traverse from 2009-2013 (pictured above) and Saturn Outlook vehicles from 2008-2010. All of the crossover utilities may have an issue with the wiring harness for their seat-mounted side airbags. Apparently, the vehicles are equipped with a Service Air Bag warning light that, if ignored, "will eventually result in the non-deployment of the side impact restraints." Those restraints include the side airbags, a front-center airbag if the vehicle is so equipped and seatbelt pretensioners. Dealers of affected vehicles will be instructed to remove driver and passenger side airbag wiring harness connectors, and then "splice and solder the wires together." The second recall affects 303,000 Chevrolet Express (pictured right) and GMC Savana vans from model years 2009-2014, and with gross vehicle weights under 10,000 pounds. Said vehicles do not comply with a head impact requirement for unrestrained occupants, and will need a reworking of the instrument panel material to be sent back on the road. It doesn't sound as though there's a quick fix for this one, as the GM press release states: "Unsold vehicles have been placed on a stop delivery until development of the solution has been completed and parts are available." Finally, the third recall affects 63,900 Cadillac XTS luxury sedans from model years 2013 and 2014. A brake booster pump may be susceptible to corrosion by way of the relay, potentially causing and electrical short, overheating, melting of plastic components and even engine fires. GM says it is aware of two engine fires in unsold XTS models and two cases of melted parts. Repairs for the issues affecting the XTS have not not mentioned by GM in the release. The Detroit News is also reporting that along with news of the triple-recall, GM is taking a $300-million credit to help pay for the repair costs, and to deal with the ongoing costs associated with the ignition switch recall. In an attempt to explain just what GM has been doing in the face of these very serious issues, newly minted CEO Mary Barra has addressed the issues in a new video.
