The Cadillac XLR was a two-seat luxury roadster offered from 2004-'09 that featured a retractable hardtop roof. (A higher-performance XLR-V model, sold from 2006-'09, is reviewed separately.) The XLR came with just about all of the luxury features you'd expect, including 18-inch alloy wheels with run-flat tires, adaptive xenon HID headlights, adaptive cruise control, heated leather seats with plenty of power adjustments, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless startup, a head-up display, Bluetooth, a navigation system and a Bose audio system with satellite radio and a CD changer. Changes throughout the model's run were minimal, the most notable being an upgrade from a five-speed-automatic transmission to a six-speed for '07, and the offering of color-themed (Passion Red, Platinum) special editions in its latter few years.
A refined yet muscular 4.6-liter V8 powered the XLR. Initially, a five-speed automatic transmission sent the Northstar V8's 320 hp and 310 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. In 2007 a six-speed automatic became standard. Regardless of transmission, the XLR was a spirited enough performer, with 0-60-mph sprints taking less than 6 seconds and high-speed cruising that was effortless and hushed. Full-throttle shifts were very quick, and the sound of the engine at speed was as good as or better than any V8 in its class. Antilock disc brakes, run-flat tires, a tire-pressure monitor, stability control, head/torso side-impact airbags and rear parking sensors were all standard.
Inside, the Cadillac XLR had rich wood trim and aluminum accents in addition to comfortable leather seating. Altogether it was a clean-looking, modern and warm cabin. However, it was cramped even for this class and compared to its European rivals, the XLR didn't come close to matching materials quality and overall design. It did have its fair share of state-of-the-art technologies such as a head-up display (which showed speed, fuel level and audio status on the windshield), adaptive cruise control and a large touchscreen mounted high in the center stack (which kept the dash free of numerous single-use buttons).

Cadillac Elmiraj Concept slinks in Leno's Garage
Wed, 28 Aug 2013Jay Leno's Garage has moved to Pebble Beach for the week. This time around, the affable comedian is taking a look at the Cadillac Elmiraj Concept that debuted during the Monterey car week, and is talking to General Motors vice president of global design, Ed Welburn.
There's plenty of reminiscing about what concept cars were like when these two were kids, before a fairly deep dive into the striking Elmiraj Concept itself. Welburn shares a few anecdotes about the design process behind the two-door concept, including how his designers changed his mind on the grille design.
After bringing up the Cimarron, Leno makes a solid point that the Elmiraj would be a solid production car that could even spawn a four-door variant. We couldn't agree more. Take a look below for the full video from Jay Leno's Garage.
Cadillac to launch Super Cruise semi-autonomous technology in two years [w/video]
Sun, 07 Sep 2014We all know that self-driving cars are coming. It's not so much a question of If so much as When. And when it comes to General Motors products, we now have something of a date to work with, as Cadillac has announced plans to roll out what it is calling Super Cruise technology in an unnamed new model within the next two years. As you would expect, this new tech can speed the car up, slow it down and keep it in its intended lane, but GM isn't expected to release a fully self-driving car, saying that it will still require "an attentive driver."
We're not quite sure what new model Cadillac will use to launch this new technology, but our best guess would be its upcoming LTS sedan. Other possibilities may include a new crossover - we've heard rumors of CUVS coming from Caddy both above and below the current SRX - or entry-level sedan, but those seem less likely than a high-dollar flagship like the LTS.
The next techy bit of kit currently being shown off by Cadillac engineers includes vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, technology which would seemingly allow cars to travel in close proximity to one another, with less danger of collisions. According to our friends at Engadget, GM is working with the University of Michigan to outfit some 120 miles of roads in and around Detroit, MI, with the requisite sensors to make all this technology possible.
Next-gen Cadillac CTS-Vs caught in parking lot
Thu, 10 Jan 2013A pair of camouflaged Cadillac CTS prototypes were spotted, and thankfully photographed, outside a grocery store in Southern California. From the image above - there are plenty more if you click over to TotalCarScore.com - it appears these could be testers for the 2014 CTS-V, but that is just speculation. We've seen the obvious "V" motif in the grille before, and there's what could be another "V" in the design of the side mirrors.
The hood on the car in the background appears to include two bulges, but the single shot that affords a tiny peek under the hood shows reveals only the airbox. Plenty of rumors, and the sight of an engine cover inscribed with the words "Twin Turbo," have caused people to wonder if a twin-turbo V6 will live under the production car's hood instead of the V8 currently there. In back, instead of the round tailpipes found outboard on all the CTS sedans, there's a pair of integrated tips in a parallelogram shape. A new shifter with contrasting stitching was spied in the cabin.
If predictions hold up it will arrive later this year. When it does, expect the body underneath all that camo to be softer on the eye compared to the current car - less science and more art. For now, hit the link to see more spy shots of what's coming.
