Volvo and GM team with Amazon for in-car deliveries

Volvo and GM are the first automakers to pair their vehicles with a new service from Amazon that lets owners have their packages delivered inside their cars, without them having to be there. The service will initially be rolled out in 37 U.S. cities at no extra charge to Amazon Prime members with a Volvo On Call or OnStar account, and it works with same-day, two-day and standard shipping. It's intended as an alternative for people who don't want to risk having their package stolen from their front porch or receive deliveries at their workplace, and both automakers say it's an example of how they're embracing innovation as a way to make their customers' lives easier. Volvo released a video (above) showing how the service works. Users download the Amazon Key App (or " Ama-zin," as the narrator pronounces it) and link their Amazon Prime account with their Volvo On Call account — or OnStar, in the case of GM-branded vehicles. Once they register their delivery location in a publicly accessible location, users can select the "In-Car" option at checkout. They get a notification when the delivery is en route and once it's completed and the car is relocked. Volvo has been offering in-car delivery in certain European countries since 2015 through its Volvo On Call platform, which enables services like the ability to send calendar-based navigation destinations directly to the vehicle, find nearby gas stations and help locate the vehicle when you forget where you parked it. Volvo says the platform is now available in roughly 50 countries and covers more than 90 percent of its global sales. The service is compatible with 2015 or newer Volvo, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles. Volvo says it's available to the majority of Volvo owners, while GM says more than 7 million vehicle owners can qualify. The service is expected to roll out to more cities later. 2017 Cadillac XT5 shows off its new metal in LA

Cadillac is in the midst of a comprehensive production overhaul, and few of its new arrivals will be as pivotal as the new XT5. Replacing the old SRX, the XT5 was revealed in the metal here on the floor of the 2015 LA Auto Show. Joining the new CT6 under Caddy's new naming scheme, the XT5 represents GM's assault on German competition like the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes GLC, Japanese rivals like the Lexus RX, Infiniti QX50, and Acura RDX, and its own cross-town nemesis, the Lincoln MKX. And to better fend off their advances, the new XT5 promises marked improvements over its predecessor in every way. The model you see here is, to our eyes, handsomer than the model it replaces, adopting the Art & Science brand's latest design cues. It offers a fresh cabin space loaded with the latest equipment. And it weighs a solid 278 pounds less than the outgoing SRX. Power still comes from a 3.6-liter V6, paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel drive. 310 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque keep it going, which ought to help it keep pace with the competition. Expect greater differentiation in GM's next-generation SUVs

General Motors says its next-generation Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade models will offer shoppers improved interior differentiation. Car and Driver recently caught up with Chris Hilts, GM's creative manager of interior design, who said that the cabins will all feature unique instrument panels, consoles, center stacks and switchgear moving forward. Apparently GM is now aware that consumers may be bothered by the fact that today's $85,000 Escalade has effectively the same cabin as a $45,000 Tahoe. Hilts says SUV buyers want more refinement than their pickup purchasing counterparts - and those same buyers also want their SUVs to have more exterior differentiation between the company's Silverado and Sierra pickup lines. Shocking.
That all sounds good to us, but we've heard this song and dance before. GM made big waves about how different the new-for-2013 Silverado and Sierra would look from each other, but judging by what we've seen so far, GM's stylists are painting in shades rather than with the full spectrum.
