1978 Seville with an upgraded 350 Olds Diesel engine. The engine is a Goodwrench DX block, a factory recall replacement for the problematic original D blocks. It now has ARP head studs and Victor-Reinz head gaskets on the original pencil injector heads. It also has a newly rebuilt TH350 Transmission, which is an upgrade from the the original TH200s that were stock on this generation.

Other mechanical work and upgrades include:
An all aluminum radiator, with new hoses.
External additional transmission cooler
New Gates water pump.
Rebuilt master cylinder.
Rebuilt Hydroboost unit.
New starter.
New Duralast Gold Batteries.
New belts
New Kumho tires
New brake calipers on all four wheels.
Fuel lines have been inspected and replaced as necessary. Fuel tank has been dropped, flushed and reinstalled.
Water separator fuel filter replacing the factory filter
New wiper motor, washer motor, and wiper blades.

Other notes:
A/C unit has been removed (see pics) and I'm running a simple heating system. I have the entire A/C unit still, though the plastic housing is most likely not useable.
Oil cooler has been bypassed, as the new radiator did not have one. I am running a simple loop in the system, with Rotella synthetic oil.

The negatives:
The exhaust is leaky. The stock headers are fine, but the replacement pipe I have put in hasn't ever sealed right. I never attended to it too much because I had dreams of installing a dually system. Still do as a matter of fact.
There is a short in the dome light circuit that I have not yet found, which requires me keeping that circuit un-powered lest I drain the batteries overnight. This means that the dome light inside doesn't work.
The interior is very decent but not mint. The driver's side seat and door are the worst.
The sunroof does not open.
Cruise control does not work
The hood hinges are broken and need repair or replacement
Trip meter does not work but Odometer does
Original paint is peeling. I have sanded and clear-coated these spots to further stop deterioration.

This car has been a several year project for me, and my starting bid is a lot less than what I have into it. I have all my receipts. It sat for 25 years before I found it, in 2010 and thus has seen very little salt. I bought it from CT as a non-runner, with the odometer reading 14K (is now at 26K). The known history of the car supports this being the accurate mileage, as I was able to trace back from the seller to the original owner the few owners in between, none of whom had it running. During my efforts to get the car registered I learned from the CT DMV that it had been last registered in 1985, to the original owner.  During my work on the car I also found a stash of business cards from the original owner under the back seat. He was a home heating oil salesman for Whirlpool, and the car even had heating oil in the tank still when I received it back in 2010.

This is a great car, and I use it as a daily driver, as well as take it on long trips. Selling because times are tough, etc., and also because the right buyer might just be out there. If it doesn't sell I will continue to use it. I may be interested in partial trades for a smaller diesel car, truck, or gas compact pickup.

The car is currently registered and inspected in my name in MA.

If you are interested in knowing more details, please contact me, as I'm sure I've left something out.

Cadillac to bolster CT sedans with XT crossovers

Wed, 01 Oct 2014

Cadillac is moving swiftly to change up its naming scheme. Barely over a week ago we received our first indication that it was considering a different name its the upcoming flagship sedan previously known as LTS. Then Cadillac not only revealed the model would be called CT6, but announced that it would set the stage with a massive overhaul of its model nomenclature. And now we have another piece of the puzzle.
According to Forbes, Cadillac will not only rename its sedans with the letters CT, but will realign its utility vehicles under the banner of XT - both to be followed by a number indicating its place in the lineup. The one exception will be the Escalade, whose nameplate has such a strong following that it would be foolish for Cadillac to cast it aside. That leaves only the SRX (pictured above), but makes room for a new crop of crossovers said to be in the works.
It's a similar approach which Cadillac's new boss Johan de Nysschen took in revising the naming scheme at Infiniti. While it's bound to ruffle some feathers and scratch some heads in the beginning - especially since the company's current flagship sedan is called XTS - it's equally sure to make sense of it all in the long run. All we need to know now is what Nysschen and his marketing chief Uwe Ellinghaus plan to call the coupes.

Cadillac ATS and CTS get blacked-out treatments

Tue, Mar 15 2016

Some still think of gallons of chrome when Cadillac comes to mind, and some of the automaker's models still take the blinged-out approach (we're looking at you, Escalade). But for those whose impression of the America luxury marque's is about more than brightwork, Caddy has announced a new Black Chrome package. Available for the ATS coupe, ATS sedan, and CTS sedan, the optional package, as you might have guessed, applies dark chrome to the outside of the vehicle. On the ATS, that includes the front grilles (upper and lower) and rear trim, as well as body-colored door handles, gloss black window moldings, and dark-finish 18-inch alloys. Buyers can choose to apply the package to the Luxury or Premium trim, with the 2.0-liter turbo or 3.6-liter V6, in rear- or all-wheel drive, with four exterior paint choices, any interior available, and in two- or four-door bodystyles. The package goes for $795 on the sedan and $595 for the coupe. The package costs a little more for the CTS but includes a bit less trim, limited to the grille and those same 18-inch alloys. It can still be paired to the 2.0 turbo or 3.6-liter V6 in rear- or all-wheel drive, with three exterior tints and a limited selection of interior treatments. Pricing here starts at $1,295 with the Luxury trim, or $1,095 in either Performance or Premium spec. Those looking for a shinier treatment, however, need not apply. The package further enhances the engaging performance and the striking design of the ATS, a Consumer Guide Best Buy for three years in a row, and the CTS, named one of Car and Driver's 10Best for three years in a row. The Black Chrome Package is available now to order at local Cadillac dealerships or through the Build Your Own tool on the Cadillac.com website. Comparing Cadillac's crazy classy coupes

Wed, May 6 2015

I just returned from the press launch of Cadillac's new ATS-V, a high-performance version of the US luxury marque's entry-level compact car. While ordinary ATVs offer a choice of a 202-horspower, 4-cylinder, a 272-hp turbocharged four or a 321-hp V-6, this one packs a twin-turbo V-6 that pumps out 464 thoroughbred horses and 445 pound-feet of hard-charging torque. Starting at $62,000 for the sedan and $64,000 for the sexy coupe, ATS-Vs are available with a 6-speed manual (with Active Rev Matching and no-lift shift capability) or an 8-speed automatic with steering-wheel shift paddles. They comes with GM's latest 4-mode Magnetic Ride Control, 5-mode Performance Traction Management (with launch control), competition-spec traction and stability controls, an electronic limited-slip differential, specially-tuned electric power steering, huge Brembo brakes, and added air cooling for their engine, transmission, and rear axle lubricants. They roll on 18-inch Michelin Pilot Super Sport tri-compound summer tires on 9-inch-wide front alloy wheels and 9.5-inch-wide rears. And they will rocket from rest to 60 miles per hour in less than four seconds while delivering 16 city EPA miles per gallon and 24 highway with the automatic and 17/23 with the manual transmission. The obvious purpose of all this technology is to effectively endow Cadillac's latest V-Series models with a rarely achieved true dual personality: go, stop, and corner like race cars on a track, then sooth, coddle, and entertain like luxury cars on the way to and from the track, or work. We had ample opportunity to verify both personalities with multiple hot laps of the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) Grand Prix course, followed by a more leisurely drive on public roads near Austin, TX. Even lacking wheel-to-wheel comparisons, we believe these hot new ATS-Vs are fully competitive with their pricier German competitors, and probably superior in some ways. So now, Cadillac will offer not one but two very sharp-looking, upscale, small-volume, 2016 compact coupes, almost the same size and at similar prices, but with totally different missions: this new high-performance ATS-V and the soon-to-be-upgraded ELR extended-range EV. The key question: why? Aside from its cramped back seat and ridiculous $76,000 starting price, I loved the ELR when it was introduced for 2014.
