Cadillac ATS-V Coupe caught undisguised ahead of LA reveal

Tue, 28 Oct 2014

Vsport versions of the CTS and XTS sedans are all well and good, but what Cadillac enthusiasts have really been looking forward to is the arrival of the next full-on V model. And here we have it.
Spied in the nude during an apparent photo shoot ahead of its anticipated debut at the fast-approaching Los Angeles Auto Show, the upcoming new Cadillac ATS-V Coupe is set to pick up where the old CTS-V left off, only in a more compact form. Unlike previous spy shots of heavily disguised prototypes, this final version is showing a chrome-framed mesh grille, along with a deep lower air dam with what looks to be a carbon-fiber front splitter. That bulging hood with heat extractor vents is tipped to be packing a twin-turbo V6 engine, breathing out of quad exhaust tips.
The aggressive aero kit also encompasses side skirts, a reshaped rear bumper and a lip spoiler on the truck, while the upgraded rolling stock wears serious low-profile rubber and the brakes appear to be carbon-ceramic units. Peer through the window and you can even see the sport bucket seats with slots for racing harnesses. All of which suggests a serious American challenger to the BMW M4 and its ilk, and we're looking forward to seeing the vehicle in the metal in LA next month.

Liberace's gilded Cadillac could be yours

Tue, 27 Aug 2013

With their chrome grilles and oversized wheels, it's hard not to notice a Cadillac these days. But this one is even more blingtastic on account of the 23.75-karat gold-leaf bodywork.
The 1931 Cadillac Golfer's Drop Head Coupé is said to have belonged to the inimitable performer Liberace, who didn't just have it covered in gold - he also had the exterior door handles plated in silver and the inside handles in 24-karat gold as well. It's also got a white leather interior and headlights that - well ahead of their time (if you'll pardon us, Mr. Tucker) - pivot with the steering wheel. All that bling is powered by a 5.7-liter V8 mated to a three-speed automatic transmission that pales in comparison to the seven, eight and even nine-speed gearboxes appearing on luxury sedans today.
The project was undertaken over the course of three years in the 1970s by one Jack Smith from Kansas. Smith (if that was his real name) sold it at auction in 1975, and it was most recently displayed for 12 years at a museum in Germany which claimed it was Liberace's own. The car is now going up for sale by Barons' at the Sandown Park horse racing track in Surrey, England, on September 17, when bidding starts at 85,000 pounds - equivalent to over $130,000 at today's rates.

GM recalling another 2.7 million vehicles in five separate campaigns

Thu, 15 May 2014

The recalls keep rolling in from General Motors, evidently keen to avoid repeating the mistakes of the ignition-switch debacle and clean house. This time they're all coming at once, with five separate recalls announced together covering approximately 2.7 million vehicles.
The largest of the five actions involves over 2.4 million units of the previous-generation Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura in order to fix brake light wiring harness, which have been found to be susceptible to corrosion. The recall is separate from the 56k Aura sedans which GM recently recalled over faulty shift cables, not to mention the previous massive recall of 1.3 million vehicles - some of them the same models - but appears to have resulted from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation that started with the G6 almost a year ago.
The second-largest campaign involves the 2014 Chevy Malibu, specifically those fitted with GM's 2.5-liter engine and stop/start system, approximately 140,000 examples of which has been found to have problematic brakes. The issue does not appear to be connected to the recall of 8k Malibu and Buick LaCrosse sedans (also involving brake woes) which we reported upon last week. Four crashes have been reported in such models, but GM admits it's not yet clear if the problem was a contributing factor in the accidents.

DESCRIPTION
Well known for year-to-year design changes, Cadillac once again outdid themselves for the 1958 model lineup! New this year were the mandated quad headlights, along with a wider “jeweled” grill and larger sweeping rear tail fins! A premium Fleetwood Sixty Special 4-door Sedan was available, although actually a hardtop, came fitted with special features that included massive, ribbed aluminum trim panels covering most of the rear fenders with matching fender skirts. It became the only model to wear its series name proudly on the rear fins, where it would normally only read Cadillac.

We are very pleased to showcase this beautiful 1958 Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty Special 4-door Sedan finished in factory, code correct Tahitian Coral with combination Beige Cloth & Leather interior! Loaded with factory appointed features like air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power seat, updated radio in stock location with power antenna, Autronic Eye auto dimming headlights, E-Z-Eye tinted glass, power window regulators, front license plate frame, driver remote adjustable outside mirror, passenger vanity mirror, exhaust turn-down tips, wide whitewall radial tires measuring 235/75R15, and more! Power comes from the original & very reliable 365ci V8 engine mated to a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission with 3.07 rear axle ratio. This power plant offers 310 horsepower and 405 lb. ft. of torque to the driver.

Our example underwent a very complete frame-on restoration completed approximately 15 years ago, and continues to show in very good to excellent category condition today! It represents one of 12,900 produced in 1958 and likely one of very few that remains so structurally solid overall today, as well as one represented in the rare & desireable Tahitian Coral exterior color! Our odometer reads only 73,186 miles, representative of the car's condition today, but we do not have enough supporting evidence to make an actual mileage claim. The interior was expertly duplicated to original condition from the headliner to the carpet! A beautifully detailed dash and gauges, like-new steering wheel, and shiny new chrome are displayed throughout! The engine bay and trunk areas are equally detailed and show very well indicating only expected signs of mild usage since completion. A correct, new spare tire and changing tools are located in the trunk with proper usage instructions and floor mat. The alignment & fitment of every panel, and impressive, crisp nature of how all doors, hood, & trunk open & close, are all excellent!

It will also come with some spare parts that include the original carburetor as it was replaced for a newer unit with electric choke, and various switches or original hardware replaced during the restoration. The original transmission was completely overhauled in September 2007 with new torque converter, seals, gaskets, bushings, etc by U.S.A. Transmissions. The brakes are new and fitted with a new power booster and master cylinder. A fresh battery was just installed upon the arrival to the Museum this October. It seems to run and drive quite well without any overheating issues, shifts smoothly through the gears, and brakes straight & confident! Please feel welcome to call with additional questions or to schedule an opportunity to see this great Cadillac in person! We look forward to working with you!
