2015 Cadillac Escalade blings its way into LA

The new Cadillac Escalade sauntered out onto the Los Angeles Auto Show stage, showing off its new familial face and redesigned interior. That exterior, with its slim, wrap-over headlights and tall, vertical taillights (both made up of LEDs) is a subtle but significant departure from the past styling of General Motors' flagship SUV.
And while there's no shortage of stuff to discuss about the Caddy's exterior, its cabin is where the big changes happen. Aside from the column-mounted shifter, the cabin receives a heavy going-over, receiving Cadillac's new CUE infotainment system and a significant upgrade to the materials. Comparing it to furniture, Eric Clough, Cadillac's director of design for interiors, said, "An exceptional level of craftsmanship has gone into the redesign of the 2015 Cadillac Escalade, and it all centers on the premium materials and extensive use of cut-and-sew live stitching."
Under hood sits a 420-horsepower, 460-pound-foot, 6.2-liter V8. Fitted with direct injection and active fuel management, fuel economy for the big Escalade should get a much-needed boost beyond the current model's 14-city and 18-highway miles per gallon, although official numbers haven't been published quite yet. A six-speed automatic is the sole gearbox choice. Cadillac has also fitted the new Escalade with GM's magnetic ride control system, which should deliver a more refined ride than its predecessor.

GM wants to have 10 plug-in models in China in five years

Last we checked, General Motors was selling all of three plug-in vehicle models in its home country of the US, and is prepared to make the Chevrolet Bolt EV available on these shores later this year. So it's notable that the automaker is hatching plans to have at least 10 plug-in variants for sale in China within the next five years, according to Hybrid Cars. Which plug-ins are coming remains a mystery. GM started selling a hybrid version of the Buick LaCrosse in China this month. The strategy makes sense, as China is now the world's largest car market, and accounts for about a third of GM's annual revenue. The automaker, which operates in China under the SAIC-GM and SAIC-GM-Wuling joint ventures, sells cars there under the Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and Boujun badges, and has been doing so for the better part of two decades. Most recently, GM started selling a hybrid version of the Buick LaCrosse in China this month. What we do know is that GM is building its Cadillac CT6 Plug-in Hybrid in China, with distribution to be split between China and the US. That model, which is scheduled to start sales by the end of the year, is being built overseas because of a combination of Chinese government support for new-energy vehicle technology through incentives and the fact that battery-pack maker LG Chem makes most of its cells in nearby South Korea. The plug-ins are part of a broader plan by General Motors to either introduce or substantially tweak about 60 models by the end of the decade. With such new models, GM looks to boost unit sales by as much as five percent a year for the next few years. As for the other nine plug-in models slated for China by 2021, the company is mum. GM spokesman Dan Flores declined to comment to AutoblogGreen. Cadillac ATS coupe and sedan get Midnight Editions

Horror stories and fairy tales make a mint by having the scariest things happen at midnight, but automakers make a mint by marketing midnight. Chevrolet busted out a Silverado Midnight Edition early this year, followed shortly thereafter by an Impala Midnight Edition. In between those two we got the Cadillac CTS Midnight Edition, and now comes an ATS following in the zero-dark-thirty tradition, according to GM Inside News. The ATS Midnight Edition will add $1,695 to the sedan price and $600 to the coupe. For that cash outlay you get black chrome on the grille, around the windows, and on the rear fascia, 18-inch "After Midnight" wheels, "sueded microfiber" trim on the steering wheel and shifter, plus the Cold Weather Package with a heated steering wheel and heated front seats. Just those few exterior changes make a big difference up front, increasing the appeal and aggression of the sports sedan without being ostentatious. You can't go dark with just any old ATS, though. The package is limited to rear- and all-wheel-drive versions of the Performance trim. And the color palette is reduced to four hues: Crystal White Tricoat, Red Obsession Tintcoat, Phantom Gray Metallic, and Black Raven. The three possible interior combos are Light Platinum with Jet Black accents, Morello Red with Jet Black accents, and Jet Black with Jet Black accents.
