1976 Cadillac Coupe de Ville in Triple Phoenician Ivory. This incredible
car has less than 32,000 original miles on the odometer and was optioned
out from new with a host of rare extras and accessories: Factory Bendix
Fuel Injection, Tilt & Telescopic Steering, Dual Power 40/60 6-way seating,
Cruise Control, Delay Wipers, Guidematic (automatic headlight dimming),
Twilight Sentinel (automatic headlight on/off), AM/FM Stereo 8-Track, Power

Hood Ornament, Econometer, Low Fuel Warning Light, Door Edge Guards and

As best as I can tell, this car was sold new
somewhere out west before going into the collection of a Michigan Cadillac
dealer. I do not know the timeline and there is no documentation to back
this up, merely some hints along the way. A few years and a few thousand
miles ago, the car was sold to a local member of our region of the Cadillac
& LaSalle Club here in Richmond. Despite being in the car biz, I have
a soft spot for these Cadillacs, which helps to explain why I am a life
member in the CLC and a founding member of our local region. I agreed to
take the car off his hands and deal with some issues it had prior to putting
it up for sale.
The car is incredibly straight and solid throughout,
it was undercoated and rust-proofed when new and at some point in its life
the recipient of a very high quality respray in its original code 52 Phoenician
Ivory. I expect the Cadillac dealer owned it by this point as whoever did
the work seemed to know their way around the car. All the trim came off
and went back on correctly and without damage to the best of my ability
to tell.
The bumper fillers were all replaced at the
time of the respray; the outer fillers around the 'fins' and the license
plate filler would seem to be firmer (i.e. ABS plastic) than the taillamp
filler panels which would seem to be the original style urethane. The original
edge trim around the filler panels was salvaged and reattached though they
would seem to have lost the little stainless steel connecting pieces which
I had on my shelf and fitted to this car. The sticklers will notice that
the stainless surrounds around the taillamps did not make it back onto the
taillamp fillers - if these fillers are urethane, there's a good reason,
as the fillers tended to crack around these surrounds.
The car was also pinstriped following the repaint
and very nicely too.
I removed the trunk lock cover and repainted
the crest, which you can see here. I also did the wheel cover emblems.
All four wheels wear these correct vintage Cadillac
locking wheel covers. The tires are as-new Firestone FR721s with the correct
width whitewall, they are not flat-spotted or damaged in any way. Back to
the caps - I removed all four crests and repainted them. These caps were
an astounding $251 extra on a new 1976 Cadillac. However, I suspect these
are not original to the car as we also have...
... a beautiful set of original 1976 wheel covers
with repainted crests, I did these only this morning. These go with the
car as well.
The right hand side of the car is no different
than the left, straight, solid and a nice even finish.
The vinyl top is in good condition as well and
I believe it to be original as it's just too good to be even a GM replacement.
You'll notice that both opera lamps also work
as they should with the lights on.
There's a little garage door rash on the front
bumper rub strip here. There is no damage to the underlying bumper and I
expect it's been this way for a long time.
Let's take a look inside the car. All four door
and rear quarter panels are like new; the vacuum-formed upper panels which
are so often cracked are perfect as are the lowers - no cracks or splits.
All the weatherstripping is likewise excellent throughout the car just like
on this door.
A quick aside, the original driver door mirror
thermometer - and it works, yes, it was 70 here this afternoon!
The original interior is phenomenal - no cracks
in the leather seats or dash, good original carpeting throughout, nothing
is overly faded or worn.
All this car's power options work as they should
- the Guidematic and Twilight Sentinel options, Climate Control (the A/C
blows cold as well!), Cruise Control - on and on. The original steering
wheel is nearly perfect, the woodgrain is intact and there are three very
small hairline cracks in the casting of the wheel itself.
Here's another image of the wheel. The camera
really picks up on these tiny cracks, I just would prefer they look worse
than better so that you're pleasantly surprised when you get the car. Just
so there is no confusion...
Both front seats (40/60 split driver/passenger)
have 6-way power adjustment, these both work without issue.

right to put a few more test miles on the car prior to sale!

while the dash has not been modified, there's indeed a funny looking radio
in there...
The most recent owner of the car must not have
had enough music on 8-track, as he bought this RetroSound AM/FM Stereo with
dual AUX inputs and a Pioneer 6-CD changer (mounted under the passenger's
seat and remote controlled). It is a very clean and good working installation,
it even makes the antenna go up and down properly. He also changed all four
speakers with Infinity Reference Series 3.5" and 6x9" drivers
front and rear.
This installation is completely reversible -
the original radio is in great condition as are the original 10 ohm speakers.
In this photo you will also see the original stand-up hood ornament and
the hubcap key tool. I also put the owners manuals for the modern stereo

work perfectly! Nice thing about 1976, this all worked key on or off!
The original spare tire has never been on the
ground. You'll also note the last six digits of the chassis number marked
on the tire from new. This is incredible.
Under the hood, the fuel injected 500 CID Cadillac
V8 engine purrs cold or hot. It goes through the cold start cycle just as
it should and is very responsive off the line - just as it should be. I
had a fuel injected 1976 Fleetwood Talisman for many years that ran no less
well than this car did. When this car arrived here it had a slight miss
- turned out to be just a few dirty connectors under the air cleaner. If
only that slight green drip underneath had been so simple to fix...
The Cadillac dealer fitted a lot of correct
AC Delco replacement parts to this car, including the radiator, alternator,
A/C compressor and water pump not long ago. Unfortunately, the water pump
did not last very long as when the car arrived here it was dripping steadily.
I removed it and procured another new one...
The restorer's itch got to me, so the pump got
painted the correct Cadillac Blue as did the crankshaft pulley. I cleaned
the flex fan and water pump pulley and left them alone as they were in amazing
original condition with no damage. I also changed the lower radiator hose
as it was a bit on the rough side. Belts are newer Gates Green Stripe belts
and they did not require replacement. Naturally, I changed the antifreeze,
then warmed it up and dumped the oil, which I then changed along with a
new AC Delco PF24 filter and a quart of BG Shear Guard on top of the API-SJ
oil with lots of good ZDDP and molybdenum disulfate I keep on hand for old
cars. Finally, I addressed a low charge in the A/C, which once again blows
cold; it had been converted to R134a, I have an R12 substitute I like much
more.
All other fluids were checked and topped off
as needed. I was impressed with how much work had been done to this car
prior to it arriving here; apart from those items mentioned above, the car
has newer spark plugs and wires, AC and Power Steering hoses and some fuel
injection parts as well.
The air conditioning VIR (Valve In Receiver)
is also a newer replacement as is the heater valve and the windshield washer
pump (on the motor).
Underneath the car, all four shocks appear to
have been replaced at one time or another, perhaps also the sway bar end
links and bushings. The steering linkage is original and tight as are the
upper and lower control arm bushings front and rear. A newer center muffler
was fitted at one time but the rest of the pipe appears original, I replaced
a section just after the center muffler that had some small pin holes. I
also had the front end alignment checked and slightly adjusted so that the
car goes down the road very ably indeed.
The body tag details all the options with which
this car was built. I long ago forgot what most of these stand for! Not
every option was detailed here.

Don't call it the third coming of the Chevy Volt. The unsurprising debut of the Cadillac CT6 PHEV in Shanghai today has a powertrain that sounds an awful lot like the one that can be found in the Volt and the Cadillac ELR. The plug-in CT6 – identical to the CT6 that debuted in New York earlier this month – has an 18.4-kWh lithium-ion battery (just like the 2016 Volt) and offers an all-electric range of around 37 miles. It also copies the "Regen on Demand" feature from the new Volt and the battery cells "use the latest generation cell chemistry found in other GM plug-in vehicles." But Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen doesn't see the two powertrains as similar in at least one important way. General Motors calls the Volt and the ELR "extended range electric vehicles" (EREV) but in a statement, de Nysschen says that the plug-in hybrid CT6 is, "an ideal platform for Cadillac to offer its first plug-in hybrid." That GM is using the PHEV terminology rather than EREV is going to be important to some, even if the practical difference is only semantic. And yes, we all understand the irony of de Nysschen – the same guy who has a history of speaking ill of plug-in cars – hyping them now. Back when he worked for Audi, he said the original Volt was too expensive for what it offered and was thus, a car for "idiots." Speaking in Shanghai today, de Nysschen said the new CT6 PHEV was, "an EV without any of the disadvantages or range constraints," according to Automotive News. If the batteries are similar to GM's other EREV/PHEV cars, the CT6 powertrain is at least different. The ELR uses a 1.4-liter engine, while the new Volt has a 1.5-liter four-cylinder mill. The CT6, on the other hand, has a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine with direct injection. There is also an "all-new rear wheel electric variable transmission (EVT) with exclusively designed motors," that will give the CT6 PHEV, "smooth, spirited acceleration." The EVT is a two-motor-unit that uses three planetary gears. Maximum overall system output is 335 horsepower and 432 pound-feet of torque. Perhaps most interesting for American audiences is the fact that GM's press release, available below, makes multiple references to US-market sales of the PHEV. Official details on the EV range and fuel economy will be made available closer to the car's US launch.

Cadillac has officially released pricing for the 2014 XTS Vsport. Buyers can expect to pay $63,020 for the fleet four-door, including destination and handling fees. That kind of coin will snag you a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 good for 410 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. As you likely already know, engineers have done a lot more than simply bolt a pair of turbos onto the company's tried and true naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6. The engine uses an all-new block, strengthened connecting rods and domed aluminum pistons and is fed through a revised direct-injection fuel system. Combined, the tweaks allow the V6 to suck down 12 psi of boost. The price tag puts the 2014 Cadillac XTS Vsport well under potential (if ambitious) competitors like the Audi S6 at $71,900, plus destination fees. A base BMW 550i will set you back $62,700, excluding destination charges, but throwing options at the German sedan will quickly see that number climb higher. With the introduction of the latest Cadillac CTS, we knew it would only be a matter of time before a new CTS-V would come along. Now General Motors has revealed that the next CTS-V will arrive sometime next year, but before it does, the company is sending off the outgoing coupe with a special edition. For 2015, the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe will come in a limited edition of 500 units decked out with a dark grille treatment, satin-finish wheels, red brake calipers and an upgraded cabin. The interior is decked out Recaro seats trimmed in black with red stitching, Midnight Sapele wood trim, metal pedals and a microsuede-trimmed steering wheel and shifter. Buyers will be able to opt for white, gray or optional black exterior paint, an available sunroof and a six-speed transmission in either manual or automatic configuration. Of course, the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 comes standard with 556 horsepower, as does Magnetic Ride Control and brakes by Brembo. Pricing will be announced closer to launch, but in the mean time, you can read all there is to know by checking out the official release below.
