The Caddy tags paid until September 2014....  if you "get-it" In January 2012 Two and a half years ago. I bought the car to experiment with giving a car a natural patina look and using my art skills I accomplished a bad-ass look on the hood, top, and trunk lid, the remainder of the car I was more subtle and had to be because the front left and right fenders are abs plastic and I painted them to look rusted, but on Saturday June 8, 2013, I painted the sides matte blue (see photos). I bought this car from the owner who was a Union 76 service station owner in town. The title is clear and in my name, this is NOT a flip or story about the car is a friend's and I'm selling it for them... This is my car! With that out of the way, at 142,000 miles the car was given a new set of Michelin Harmony 95T tires all the way around. P205/70R15, a full lube job, windshield wipers. At the same time, the serpentine belt was replaced, the cooling system was serviced, and the car was made road ready. It's fun to drive and you definitely get the looks, more on that in a minute. Yes, the wheels are orange, they are NOT painted, they were professionally powder-coated by Armando at PERMACOLOR in Carp. Center caps were purchased new on ebay and installed. On June 20, 2014 a new First Interstate battery was installed. The car was professionally lowered by the award-winning team at Scott's Hot-rods N Customs in Oxnard, Ca.  The factory radio does not work, but the clock in it lights up, so it may be a fuse on the back of the radio, but I'm too old to crawl under the dash and look. There is a crusty bubble at the side rear of the drivers side, just up and left of the gas filler door. and the trunk will close, but it's a little tricky and does take some finesse. Dependable, YES... I had the car gone through so that it is always road-ready and when you put your foot down, the car knows what you want to do., Headlamps, turn signals, brake lights, dome light, door lights, back up lights, license plate lights all work, gauges work fine and the mileage is true. Brakes are fine and the tranny and engine perform as they should. Lots of room in this car. The interior is white with the exception of the center armrest which is tan and I recently replaced and in great condition, although the seats could use a good scrubbing, personally, I would have them dyed white, it's faster and they would look new if you did. The carpet and dash are blue. I added a Stroh's Beer Tap to the selector, it's old, since it has Detroit 26, Michigan rather than a zip code on it. (see photo) I yellowed the front turn signals and blacked out the grille center see photo and compare to the original shot of the car. The oil is Castrol Syntec, and of course, the filter was changed, fittings lubricated and all the usual belts, brakes, lights, tire pressure, etc. were checked and are fine. When the car was lowered it was pointed out to me that the left inner tie rod end should be replaced and it was on January 21, 2013, On that same day the transmission cooler hoses and clamps were repaired and a new transmission filter kit and fluid were installed. The valve cover gaskets were changed on Friday June 7, 2013, a small crack in the windshield repaired by Safe-lite, and a front-end alignment done. I had the engine and under-chassis professionally degreased.. In California, this is something that you have to go to a pro; You can't just do it in your driveway... big fine if you get caught.. and it was only a hundred bucks.  NOW, about the pictures: The hood, top, and trunk were originally painted to look rusty... but I wanted a great patina, so I ground, used a little magic liquid, and then clear coated to bring out that brown patina we all love. The front fenders I've described. I painted the sides with advertising from  a place that use to exist in Detroit (which is where I use to live, but moved to Ca. in 1978). That's why the rear license plate, which is abs plastic is painted to look rusty and says Detroit, there's a tiger in the back window (as in Detroit Tiger), there's a Stroh's beer tap on the selector... and, by the way, that's a 1955 Chevrolet hood ornament I used to replace the standard Cadillac emblem on the hood.  I've popped off the side plastic... ugly... the trim over the rear wheels and the mirror casings are plastic but painted to look rusty (see photos), and the rear tail light surrounds and between the trunk lid and bumper are a kind of rubber/plastic, but painted to look like they are rusting.... This was something I wanted to try on a car to get the effect... I painted the sides of the car on Saturday, June 8, 2013 a matte blue (SEE PHOTOS). If you're not building and customizing your car, you're probably wasting time in front of the TV. Of course, this vehicle is sold as-is, where-is and it is the buyers responsibility to arrange transportation or pick-up of the car. I DRIVE THE CAR REGULARLY, 'CAUSE IT'S COOL! so, that being said, the mileage when you get the car will be somewhere between 145,000 and 146,000 miles. As of this writing the mileage is 145,351 and this vehicle has been listed locally, so auction may end at any time.

Gimp Pimp and Aqua Volvo at 24 Hours of LeMons | Car Club USA

Tue, Mar 22 2016

Car Club USA heads to Sonoma, CA where the Gimp Pimp Cadillac and Aqua Volvo will take on all the crazy, sub-$500 competition at the 24 Hours of LeMons endurance race. "Over the last 30 years, car racing has gotten extremely serious and extremely expensive and it just seemed like there was a real need to make it accessible again," said LeMons founder Jay Lamm. The result is a series of endurance races across the US and Australia where all you need to join the fun is a junky car and some basic safety equipment. "It's just fun, compared to pro racing," said Wendy Epstein, driver of a 1979 Volvo 242 in bright "Aqua Volvo" livery. "24 Hours of LeMons is a form of racing that is designed to be cheap and easy, and anybody can do it," said Bill Manfroy, driver of the Gimp Pimp, a 1996 Cadillac SLS with some important modifications. "Part of what makes the Gimp Pimp Cadillac so special is that it does have hand controls, so it gives access to people like me that ordinarily get to race." "Which makes it perfect for LeMons." Each Car Club USA episode features a different car club or event from across the US, where passionate owner communities gather to share automotive experiences and embark on incredible adventures. From Main Street cruises to off-road trails, catch all the latest car club activity on Autoblog. GM recalling another 2.7 million vehicles in five separate campaigns

Thu, 15 May 2014

The recalls keep rolling in from General Motors, evidently keen to avoid repeating the mistakes of the ignition-switch debacle and clean house. This time they're all coming at once, with five separate recalls announced together covering approximately 2.7 million vehicles.
The largest of the five actions involves over 2.4 million units of the previous-generation Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura in order to fix brake light wiring harness, which have been found to be susceptible to corrosion. The recall is separate from the 56k Aura sedans which GM recently recalled over faulty shift cables, not to mention the previous massive recall of 1.3 million vehicles - some of them the same models - but appears to have resulted from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation that started with the G6 almost a year ago.
The second-largest campaign involves the 2014 Chevy Malibu, specifically those fitted with GM's 2.5-liter engine and stop/start system, approximately 140,000 examples of which has been found to have problematic brakes. The issue does not appear to be connected to the recall of 8k Malibu and Buick LaCrosse sedans (also involving brake woes) which we reported upon last week. Four crashes have been reported in such models, but GM admits it's not yet clear if the problem was a contributing factor in the accidents.

Best and Worst GM Cars

Thu, Apr 7 2022

Oh yes, because we just love receiving angry letters from devoted Pontiac Grand Am enthusiasts, we have decided to go there. Based on a heated group Slack conversation, the topic came up about the best and worst GM cars. First of all time, and then those currently on sale, and then just mostly a rambling discussion of Oldsmobiles our parents and grandparents owned (or engineered). Eventually, three of us made the video above. Like it? Maybe we can make more. Many awesome GM cars are definitely going unmentioned here, so please let us know your bests and worsts in the comments below. Mostly, it's important to note that this post largely exists as a vehicle for delivering the above video that dives far deeper into GM's greatest hits and biggest flops, specifically those from the 1980s and 1990s. What you'll find below is a collection of our editors identifying a best current and best-of-all-time choice, plus a worst current and worst-of-all-time choice. Comprehensive it is not, but again, comments. -Senior Editor James Riswick Best Current GM Vehicle Chevrolet Corvette We were flying by the seats of our pants a bit in this first outing and my notes were similarly extemporaneous. When it came time to tie it all together on camera, I failed spectacularly. Thank the maker for text, because this gives me the opportunity to perhaps slightly better explain my convoluted reasoning. I chose the C8 Corvette because it's simply overwhelmingly good, and it's merely the baseline from which this generation of Corvette will be expanded.  While the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing (more on that in a minute) is an amazing snapshot of GM's current performance standing and its little sibling so enraptured me that I went out and bought one, their existence is fleeting. Corvette will live on; forced-induction Cadillac sport sedans, not so much. So while all three are amazing machines when viewed in a vacuum, the Corvette stands above them as both a reflection of GM's current performance credentials and a signpost of what is to come. So, given the choice between the C8 and the 5V-Blackwing right now, I'd choose the C8. In 10 years, when the Blackwing is no longer in production and Corvette is in its 9th generation? Well, that might be a different story. Now, just pretend I said something even remotely that coherent when we get to the part of the video where I try to make an argument for the 5-V Blackwing as best GM car I've ever driven. Or just laugh at me while I ramble incoherently.
