Sometimes a car is really a time capsule. Like this rare 1972 Buick Skylark Custom Four-Door Hardtop. It’s not just that it’s been ages since you’ve seen one, it’s that you probably haven’t seen one as amazing as this since 1972.

A gentleman named Myron Klickmer of Mifflinburg, PA ordered this Skylark from his local dealer, Watson Motors, in the Spring of 1972. The car was completed at Framingham, MA early in March and delivered to him in April of 1972.

In addition to all of the upgrades standard with a Skylark Custom, here’s how he ordered it:

A01 Tinted Glass

B84 Body Side Molding

B93 Door Edge Guards

C60 Air Conditioning

D33 Remote Mirror

F40 Rally Ride and Handling Option

J50 Power Front Disc Brakes

L30 350 2-BBL V8

M38 3 Speed Automatic Transmission

N40 Power Steering

P01 Deluxe Wheel Covers

U15 Speed Alert

U63 AM Radio

VE5 Bumper Rub Strips

WC4 Molding Group

Y53 Front and Rear Bumper Guards

Y54 Carpet Savers F and R

14L- Silver Mist Lower

14U- Silver Mist Upper

140- Green Custom Cloth Trim

He had the car ten years (winter stored, thank goodness) until trading it back in at the same dealer in May of 1983 for another new Buick. It had 59,000 miles and change on the odometer. A young employee on the wash rack named Jace Watson spotted the Buick and brought it home. Although rarely driven, and still on an ancient set of bias-ply tires, he kept the car in garaged and in excellent original condition until finally parting with it in the spring of 2012.

We’ve always had an eye for Buicks and acquired it at that time with 59,565 miles showing. We decided to keep it completely original cosmetically but service it for dependable touring, including:

All fluids flushed

Completely new brakes including master cylinder, pads, rear shoes, hoses, lines, wheel cylinders, and even springs and lines as needed.

Brand new radiator, hoses, thermostat and coolant, fan clutch, heater hoses and water pump

Completely new dual exhaust system

Five brand new radial whitewall tires

Totally overhauled air conditioning with new compressor, receiver/dryer, condenser, expansion valve and POA bypass. The system is charged with R134A.

Complete tune up including all ignition parts and coil.

New fuel pump and new fuel lines.

What’s it like today? It's a sweetheart of a Skylark.

100% rust free, an unmolested straight and honest example

Lustrous Magic Mirror Silver Mist paint with no signs of any paint repair ever- believed to be 100% original

Glowing chrome and brightwork with no rust, pitting, or dullness

Supple, soft rubber trim

Four original T-3 headlamps with the correct markings, and no, we didn’t replace any.

Immaculate original interior as nice as any I have ever seen. The radio and instruments reflect in the glowing chrome bezels. Even the original floor mats are intact and untorn and no, I didn’t slick them up with goo for the photos. I just washed it and backed it out of the garage, and the car you see is the car you get.

It’s as honest and intact of a ‘72 Skylark as you are going to see. It starts instantly and drives like a new car. The transmission shifts beautifully, the F40 ride and handling is a pleasure and the car is FAST. It must think that it’s a Gran Sport with back doors. The air is cold and the car feels tight and new.

Of course, no 40-plus year old original is going to be perfect and there are some areas of minor patina. There are a few scratches and some minor dings here and there, a couple scrapes on the front bumper rub strip and there’s a couple dings on the passenger side- look in the photo album (with over 160 pictures) where I have pointed out everything I saw. All pretty minor and nothing that detracts from the beauty and charm of the car overall.

We paid a very fair price when we bought the Skylark and have invested generously in it. Of course, an old car is not a piggy bank but we have placed a very reasonable reserve on the little Skylark that represents an excellent value and would like to find it a good home. The car may be inspected in Palm Springs, CA by appointment. I live here full time and am generally available with a day's notice. It has a clean and clear CA title and current CA plates renewed through May of 2015.  Port delivery for a European Buyer will run approximately $300. Please feel free to ask any questions prior to bidding. My name is Jeff and I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Remember that your bid is a commitment to purchase.

Thanks for looking and happy bidding!

Mixed sales results, but automaker stocks rise on need for cars in Houston

Fri, Sep 1 2017

DETROIT — The Big Three Detroit automakers on Friday reported better-than-expected August sales and issued optimistic outlooks for demand as residents of the Houston area replace flood-damaged cars and trucks after Hurricane Harvey, sending their stocks higher. General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler posted mixed August U.S. sales, with GM up 7.5 percent and Ford and Fiat Chrysler down. Japanese automaker Toyota improved sales by nearly 7 percent, while Honda fell 2.4 percent. Still, analysts focused on the potential for Detroit automakers to cut inventories and stabilize used vehicle prices as residents of Houston, the fourth largest city in the United States, are forced to replace tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of vehicles after the devastation from Hurricane Harvey. Mark LaNeve, Ford's U.S. sales chief, told analysts on Friday that following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 "we saw a very dramatic snapback" in demand. That said, Ford sales fell 2.1 percent in August. It sold 209,897 vehicles in the United States, compared with 214,482 a year earlier. Sales were down 1.9 percent in the Ford division and off 5.8 percent at Lincoln. Demand was down for cars, crossovers and SUVs. It was not clear how many vehicles in the Houston area will be scrapped, LaNeve said, saying he had seen estimates ranging from 200,000 to 400,000 to 1 million. Ford's Houston dealers may have lost fewer than 5,000 vehicles in inventory, he said. Ford is the No. 1 automaker in the Houston market, with 18 percent share, according to IHS Markit. The company plans to ship used vehicles to Houston dealers and has "every indication we would have to add some production" of new vehicles to meet demand, LaNeve said. Investor concerns about inventories of unsold vehicles and falling used car prices have weighed on Detroit automakers' shares most of this year. Now, automakers can anticipate a jolt of demand from a big market that is a stronghold for Detroit brand trucks and SUVs. "It's got to be a positive for the industry," LaNeve said. Investors appeared to agree. GM shares rose as much as 3.3 percent to their highest since early March. Ford increased 2.8 percent at $11.34, and Fiat Chrysler's U.S.-traded shares were up 5.2 percent $15.91, hitting their highest in more than five years. GM reported a 7.5 percent increase in U.S. auto sales in August, helped by robust sales of crossovers across its four brands.

2018 Buick Enclave launches luxury Avenir trim

Wed, Apr 12 2017

Remember the shapely Buick Avenir Concept from the 2015 Detroit Auto Show? Well, this isn't that, even if they both share the same name. Meet the Buick Enclave Avenir, a new trim built atop Buick's redesigned 2018 Enclave seven-passenger crossover. Think of it as Buick's version of GMC's Denali trim and you'll be on the right track. As the brand's new top trim level, everything that's normally optional in the Enclave comes standard in the Avenir, along with a bunch of exclusive content. And this is just the first application of the Avenir package for Buick – expect the rest of the TriShield brand's products to get a similar makeover in due time. All Avenir models from Buick will get what the brand is calling a three-dimensional mesh grille with a new set of chrome wings. From there, the Enclave edition bundles unique pearl nickel 20-inch wheels, a Rear Camera Mirror like the one seen from Cadillac, and a new kind of LED headlamps that use something called Evonik Acrylite lighting technology. An in-car air ionizer promises to keep the cabin smelling fresh. The rest of the Enclave package sounds pretty good, too. It's got a standard 3.6-liter V6 engine with 302 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional. A tow rating of 5,000 pounds is standard fare for this class, as are seven seats inside. A frameless eight-inch LCD screen and integrated 4G wireless connectivity are other family-friendly highlights. We expect more Avenir-branded models to make their appearance in the Buick showroom soon. In the meantime, check out the Enclave Avenir in the image gallery above, and stay tuned for more from New York. Related Video:

Why Buick's future lies in China

Mon, Apr 10 2017

Back in the last half of 2008 and into 2009, when General Motors was looking at too much capacity for too few customers, when it was running out of money and needing to go to the governments of the US and Canada and to the UAW for financial support, its management team was pretty much instructed by the feds to focus resources on what would create the best likelihood for a return on the investments and guarantees that it was getting. Things needed to be cut, and not just the corporate air fleet. This led to the elimination of Saturn, Hummer and Pontiac and the sale of Saab to Spyker. What remained of GM's North American brand portfolio was Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and GMC. (Oldsmobile had been shuttered in 2004.) There were a variety of opinions regarding which brands GM should keep/lose during the midst of the Great Recession. Some thought GMC should be axed, but then it was pointed out that GMC essentially produced high-content Chevys, which resulted in fantastic transaction costs. Lots of money in the back of those pickups. Others thought Buick should be eliminated. The rationale was: Chevy was the mass-market brand, Cadillac was the luxury brand, and GMC helped leverage the company's investment in trucks. (Yes, even back then the F-Series was winning the pickup sales race, so it was always a matter of adding Silverado and Sierra sales to show that GM was solidly in the game.) So what was Buick? Better than Chevy but not as good as a Cadillac? Somehow that doesn't seem to be a particularly aspirational position to hold. But Buick's identity didn't need to be worked out in 2008-09 because there was a single compelling reason to keep it: China. According to official GM history, Pu Yi, the last emperor of China, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the first provisional president of China, and Zhou Enlai, a Chinese premier, "Either owned, drove or were driven in Buick automobiles." What's more: "According to statistics from the Shanghai government, in 1930 one out of every six cars on the city's roads was a Buick." Which is to say that Buick got to China early and has a major presence in that market. When the Regal Sportback and Regal TourX were being unveiled at the GM Design Dome the first week of April, Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick, gave a briefing of Buick's place on the automotive landscape.
