YOU WILL GET THUMBS UP WHEREVER YOU GO. DRIVING THIS CAR IS TOTAL STRESS RELIEF.  BACKGROUND AND HISTORY

If you own or have owned one of these fine Buick automobiles you know what an exciting, luxurious car they are. The Convertible was based on a new Body Style for Riviera, introduced in 1979. Changed little over the next seven years, this Body Style has gone down as the best selling Riviera of all time. By 1982 GM Brass was feeling pretty good about this car and decided to introduce a Convertible version in the spring of 1982. This being the first for Buick since 1975 and the first Convertible of any kind to come out of GM since the “The Last Of A Breed” 1976 Cadillac Eldorado was axed. See;www.bicentennialeldorado.com  This was a big step, it was 1982 and times were tough for the American auto industry.

On February 25, 1982, a press release was sent out to all dealers. The all new, limited production, Buick Riviera Convertible is to debut in the spring, mid April 1982. Available in two colors only; White or Red Firemist with a Maple / Claret Leather Interior with a White Vinyl Top. Most never made it to dealer’s lot before mid to late July of that year and all featured the new updated 1983 Riviera Grill. This was a very well appointed automobile by 1982 standards and the price reflected it.

Consider this, a brand new 1982 Buick Riviera hardtop, a best seller for Buick, cost $14,898.45 base price with freight. Not a cheap car by any standard. The 1982 Buick Riviera Convertible, a new untested car for Buick, cost $24,494.25 base price with freight. Add some options and this car could top out at over $27,500.00. This was the highest priced automobile GM sold, and that counted the entire brand, including Cadillac.

In 1982 only 1248 were produced. Not a bad number for a newly introduced, limited production, high end automobile.

While all of the cars began life as a hardtop at the Linden, New Jersey assembly plant, they were soon on their way to American Sun Roof (ASC) in Lansing, Michigan. Here they would have the top removed, the structure strengthened and the final assembly of the convertible top mechanism, rear seat and interior appointments. It should be noted that the rear seat assembly is unique to the convertible alone and will not interchange with the hardtop. After completion here at ASC it was off to the Dealer or Buick Zone Warehouse and Distribution Center in Flint, Michigan.

A lot of these cars were actually driven by GM Executives, Zone Managers and other Officials within all ranks of GM. It was not uncommon to have ‘Higher Ups’ from Cadillac tooling around in a Buick Convertible as their division had been neutered of Convertibles a few years back. Cadillac liked this car so much that they actually got their own version in the form of the 1984 and 1985 Cadillac Eldorado.

If 1982 was good, 1983 had to be better and was, sort of. As Buick and ASC ramped up production, they ended up producing 1750 for the 1983 model year. Prices jumped to $25,702.00 base price with freight up from 1982 by a bit over $1200.00. As it ended up 1983 was not as kind to the Riviera Convertible as the last year had been. While more had been built, most languished, unsold on Dealer lots. Seems the new idea was a short lived one in the minds of the purchasing public. It was a lot of money to spend on a car.

Styling was mostly unchanged from 1982. Options remained about the same, the 4.1 V6 was still the standard engine with the 5.0 V8 being the most chosen as an option. Like in 1982, you still could not get the Turbo V6 or 5.7 V8 Diesel engine options. This was the last year for the 8-track tape player, but the CB Radio option would live on for 2 more years. Locking Wire Wheel Covers was standard equipment again this year with the Chrome Plated Road Wheels as an option, coming with a $40 credit if ordered. 4 wheel disc brakes were still standard on the 1983’s, just as they had been on the 1982's but became optional on the 1984 and 1985 model year Convertibles.

If 1982 and 1983 were banner years with high production numbers, 1984 and 1985, being the last two years, were the other end of the stick. Only 500 Convertibles were built in 1984, but you did not have a problem finding a 1983, as Dealers still had a record number of them for sale. Prices jumped yet again, now bringing the base with freight to $26,332.00 a $630 increase.

New for 1984 was the grill, tail lights and interior. The car now got a headliner covering all the convertible top mechanisms. This made the car look more complete and helped to quiet down the interior as well as keep it warmer in the winter. Gone was the 8-track tape, new to debut was the Bose Music System, but, it was not available on the Convertible, so you still had to talk to your good buddy on the CB. The big news was the engine options. For the first time you could order the much ballyhooed 3.8 Liter Sequential-port Fuel Injected Turbocharged V-6. This was a much needed option for this luxury sport coupe convertible. But as with the Diesel engines of the day it sold poorly, only 47 Riviera Convertibles received this engine. Price was another problem since it was a $900.00 option.

Buick Cascada convertible likely dead after 2019

Tue, Oct 9 2018

Opel announced it was discontinuing a few cars today, but the one that got our attention was the Cascada. The plan is to let the Opel Cascada live out its life until the end of 2019, with no replacement in the works. This brings into question the future of the Buick Cascada sold in the United States, since it's basically the same car and produced by Opel in the same factory in Poland. The Cascada has been on sale in other markets since 2012 badged as either an Opel or Vauxhall, but the Buick-badged car was only introduced in North America for the 2016 model year. Of course, Buick could decide to build the model beyond 2019, but it would need to find a new manufacturing location, convertibles aren't exactly popular, and the car would be egregiously old at that point. In other words, it looks like the Cascada is dead after 2019. We asked Buick what the game plan might be, and were told that there is nothing official to say at the moment. That's par for the course for something a manufacturer doesn't want to talk about yet, but it's also possible the announcement came as a surprise. Opel is no longer owned by GM, so the announcement actually came from the brand's new PSA ownership (the same French company that owns Peugeot and Citroen). As for the rationale behind the decision, that was a head scratcher, too. Opel/PSA said it was discontinuing the Cascada, as well as the subcompact Adam and Karl, in order to meet increasingly stringent emissions requirements and produce crossovers instead. This seems contradictory. Replacing a low-selling convertible and a pair of low-profit subcompacts with high-selling, high-profit crossovers sure seems like a solid business decision more than an emissions requirement one. Indeed, the Buick Cascada has never been a raging success in the United States either, with only 5,595 leaving the lots in 2017. It helped bring in some different kinds of customers to the Buick brand, but the impact is minute compared to a vehicle like the hot-selling Buick Encore. eBay Find Of The Day: 1946 Tucker Torpedo Prototype II hides a secret Riviera

Thu, 10 Jul 2014

The Tucker Torpedo is one of the great what-if stories of automotive history. Preston Tucker hoped to revolutionize the industry with a car unlike any other on the road at the time. However, due to a variety of problems, he only managed build 51 vehicles before closing shop. Over time, they have become highly sought-after; In 2012, one sold for $2.65 million at auction.
That brings us to this Tucker "replica" that you see above because it might be one of the ugliest monstrosities ever put together. However, we might extend some leniency to the creator, as the vehicle isn't actually trying to replicate the classic look of the 1948 Tucker Torpedo. Instead, it is attempting to reproduce an earlier prototype from 1946 that actually features that weird, trident nose. According to the seller, his uncle built the car as a labor of love and supposedly used actual plans from Tucker as inspiration.
Underneath all of the crazy changes is a 1971 Buick Riviera powered by a 455-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) Buick V8. Some of the replica's odder modifications include the front fenders that turn with the wheels and the fin running down the back. All three headlights work, but the one in the middle is only for the high beams. Oddly, the small hinged sections on the roof are meant to open to avoid hitting your head when getting in or out. Maybe the seller's uncle was a very tall guy?

Buick rolls out more potent Encore Sport Touring

Mon, Jul 20 2015

Buick has announced a new Sport Touring version of the Encore. And more than a trim level or special edition, we're glad to report that the new model packs a more potent engine. Instead of the 1.4-liter turbo four that produces 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque in the standard Encore, the new Sport Touring model features a newer, more powerful engine that GM says shares little with the existing unit aside from its displacement. The new 1.4-liter turbocharged, direct-injection engine produces a more commanding 153 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, which is up a good 11 percent and 20 percent, respectively, over the existing engine. It's still mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, and features a stop/start system to optimize fuel efficiency. Buick wasn't willing to estimate where the mile-per-gallon numbers might land, though that information will be available closer to sale. Along with the upgraded engine, Buick is also throwing in 18-inch wheels, a rear spoiler, and the features from the Convenience package as well. The new Encore model follows just a couple of months after we first caught wind of a trademark filed for the Sport Touring name. At the time, it looked like it was set to be applied to the Regal and LaCrosse sedan, which could still follow as well. Related Video: Buick Introduces 2016 Encore Sport Touring New 1.4L turbo engine adds performance, exclusive exterior cues add distinction 2015-07-20 DETROIT – Buick today introduced the 2016 Encore Sport Touring – a more spirited take on the brand's popular crossover. It is distinguished by unique exterior cues and driven by an exclusive, all-new 1.4L turbocharged engine featuring direct injection and stop/start technology. The exterior features include a winged rear spoiler, 18-inch aluminum premium-finish wheels and body-color door handles, while the technologically advanced 1.4L turbo is part of a new, global family of small, power-dense engines developed to balance performance and efficiency with exceptional refinement. Direct injection helps it generate an estimated 153 hp (112 kW) and 177 lb-ft of torque (240 Nm), for about 11 percent more horsepower and nearly 20 percent more torque than the Encore's standard engine – and a greater feeling of power on demand, particularly at low- and mid-range engine speeds. It's matched with a six-speed automatic transmission. Stop/start technology contributes to reduced fuel consumption in stop-and-go driving.
