Description:      1963 Buick Riviera Sport Coupe

Billed at its inception as “America’s Bid for a Great New International Classic Car,” this car certainly ranks among the finest surviving examples imaginable. This car is ready to show or go.

When the head of General Motors Styling, William Mitchell, first produced the Buick Riviera in 1963, the rumor was that he’d wanted to create an American Jaguar.

Buick’s 1963 Riviera was General Motor’s impressive response to the popular four-passenger Ford Thunderbird. The Riviera was originally conceived to be a Cadillac personal luxury coupe with a LaSalle nameplate.

Mitchell later said that the car he’d envisioned was inspired by classic Rolls Royce designs, with a healthy dose of Ferrari thrown in.

When GM decided to let Divisions other than Cadillac make a pitch to build Mitchell’s proposed personal coupe, it was Buick that landed the rights to build the new car. Produced as the Buick Riviera, the new car was announced as, “America’s Bid for a Great New International Classic Car.”

The boldly understated Riviera featured a crispy sculpted roofline, low profile, and frameless side glass. At 117 inches, its wheelbase was a full nine inches shorter than that of Buick’s flagship Electra. In addition to using a specially adapted version of the bigger Buick’s “X” frame design, the Riviera was also powered by the same 325 HP, 401 cubic inch nail head V8 found in the larger cars.

While successfully taking on Thunderbird, the Riviera also brightened Buick’s prestige image. Seeking to ensure exclusivity, then Buick general manager Edward D. Rollert limited first year production to exactly 40,000 cars.

The exceptional 1963 Riviera offered here was formerly owned by Mr. Dick Nesbitt who bought the car back in 1973 from the original owner.

Mr. Nesbitt is a senior writer for many classic car magazines; he is also an auto editor of consumer guide magazine. This particular car was shown and reviewed in the book “Great Cars of the Sixties” page 9.

The car was purchased from Mr. Nesbitt back in 2001; the car had only traveled 43,576 miles from new. For the past fourteen years, the car has been professionally maintained as part of a 30 plus car collection and has travelled only 2,500 miles since. Always kept indoors.

This is an awesome unmolested original 46,000 mile car. It is one of the best preserved  untouched  meticulously maintained original and unrestored cars you will ever find. It has a bone dry flawless body. Comes with power brakes. New beautiful original code #A 946 Regal Black paint. Also included in car are the 4 original hub caps. All glass is original in perfect condition, working original Sonomatic AM radio with rear seat speaker, working power antenna, original 1 inch white wall bias ply spare tire, original tire jack, original T3 headlamps, original speed alert warning in perfect working condition, All interior lights and courtesy lights work. The engine bay is professionally detailed; the car still stands tall on its suspension. Body fit is trim and tight.

The first generation Rivera is a Milestone design and is considered very collectable today. GM considered this car a “Styling Landmark” in 1963 and the same holds true today. Certainly ranking among the finest surviving examples imaginable, this spectacular first-year Riviera is ready to show or go. Combining its elegant and attractive color combination with originality that’s unlikely to be surpassed, here is a Riviera that will always stand out.

Buick to use Velite name for its Cascada?

Mon, Dec 1 2014

Ever since Opel brought out the Cascada convertible last year, rumors have been flying that Buick would offer it Stateside – much like it does with the Insignia-based Regal and the Astra-based Verano. And now we might have our best clue yet as to what Buick might call it. According to GM Authority, General Motors has filed to use the name Velite on a new model. The name first appeared on a convertible concept unveiled over a decade ago at the 2004 New York Auto Show (pictured above), but GM reportedly opened an application to trademark the nameplate for production in 2011, seeking extensions on its application every six months since. Of course the fact that it's applied for its fifth extension (of a permissible six) doesn't necessarily mean that GM will ultimately bring the cabriolet to US showrooms, or that it will use the Velite name if it does, but the fact that GM is keeping the name alive could be a good sign. The market for relaxed four-seat convertibles has been shrinking, leaving it up to drop-top muscle cars like the Chevy Camaro and Ford Mustang. But with entries like the Toyota Camry Solara, Volkswagen Eos and Chrysler 200 Convertible having dropped off the market, the Buick Velite (or Cascada, or whatever it's ultimately called) could have the sedate cabriolet segment all to itself – even if (or especially if) Lexus dealers aren't interested in touching it.

General Motors shaking up its marketing... again

Wed, 13 Mar 2013

One of the things that dogs the full comeback of General Motors is the instability of its marketing. That part of the automaker got yet another big shakeup today when GM confirmed what I have been tweeting for a few days - strong rumors that the Chevrolet and Cadillac ad accounts are walking to new ad agencies.
Cadillac, GM's luxury brand, is going into review from Fallon Worldwide, Minneapolis and the indications are that Campbell-Ewald, Chevy's old ad shop, will end up with most or all of it. C-E just announced that it was moving from its long-time home in Warren, MI to a new downtown Detroit office next to Ford Field, just blocks from GM.
The other shoe to drop shortly will be the shift of GM's most important brand, Chevy, from Goodby, Silverstein & Partners of San Francisco to McCann-Erickson of Troy, MI. McCann used to be the agency for Buick and GMC, as well as GM's corporate advertising, and has retained some pieces of business over the last few years. Sources have even told us that it was McCann that did a lot of the creative work on Chevy's new ad platform, Find New Roads. (Not to be confused with a former McCann tagline for Saab, "Find Your Own Road.")

Avista concept shows Buick's performance potential [w/video]

Mon, Jan 11 2016

With names like Wildcat and Riviera in its past, Buick knows how to make a good-looking performance machine. It's just been awhile. But the Avista concept revealed Sunday night ahead of the Detroit Auto Show suggests Buick's sporting heritage might be more than relegated to grainy photos. The Avista is a 2+2 sports coupe running a twin-turbocharged V6 cranking out 400 horsepower through the rear wheels. Look familiar? It should, as it reprises many of the design cues from Buick's last show-stealer, the Avenir, which debuted a year ago in Detroit. "The Avista embodies the dynamic soul of Buick," said Duncan Aldred, vice president of global Buick sales, service, and marketing. "It is a modern expression of the brand's heritage of sophisticated performance, communicated with beautiful elegance." The front end features a prominent grille with Buick's newly colored tr-shield as the centerpiece. It's flanked by wings that stretch out horizontally and edgy headlights that portend the appearance of future Buicks. There's an aggressive fascia, chrome-trimmed vents, and it all rolls on 20-inch wheels. The Avista has a 110.7-inch wheelbase (which is the same as the Chevy Camaro), and the tracks measure 63 inches in front and 62.9 inches in back, which Buick says makes for a sporty stance. The B-pillarless cabin conjures the open layout of great boulevard cruisers of days gone by. It's done up in gray leather punctuated with carbon-fiber and aluminum accents. Yep, Buick does know how to do performance. In case you forgot, the Avista is a strong reminder of the past, and it offers hope for the brand's future. Watch the live unveiling in the video below. Buick Introduces Avista Concept Design elegance, performance heritage conveyed in turbocharged 2+2 coupe DETROIT – Ahead of its public debut at the North American International Auto Show, Buick today revealed the Avista concept – a 2+2 coupe that pushes the brand's contemporary design ethos and rekindles its historic performance roots. A sleek, sweeping proportion is the foundation for this vision of a contemporary grand tourer, with a 400-horsepower twin-turbocharged V-6 driving the rear wheels and a driver-focused cockpit offering a comfortable, connected center of control. "The Avista embodies the dynamic soul of Buick," said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick Sales, Service and Marketing.
