History:
After a test drive on the LA freeways, I purchased this refurbished Southern California 1955 Buick Special Riviera 4 door hardtop 264 cubic inch V8 nailhead engine in 1994 and shipped to PA where I moved that year. It was garage kept for the next 19 years.
Features: It has the sporty look of the hardtop Riviera that eliminated that clunky center post between the side glass which non-Riviera models that year retained. First model year among all makes for the hardtop introduced by Buick with this classic Riviera with collector significance.
Mechanics sound: Engine runs well. Needs new gas tank, radiator and tires. With the fuel line disconnected and a squirt of gas into the 2 barrel carb the engine starts right up and sounds very good.
Chrome: RECHROMED 1993 then garaged stored 20 years. Ninety-five percent good with light rust in lower front recesses and one small spot in recess on back bumper near driver side.
Body: All solid sheet metal with historically no rust through anywhere, no wreck damage, no body work. Even the wheel wells are solid. As you can see from these current photos the driver quality paint is 95 percent good but not professionally painted. Four or five spots bubbled or peeled 1/2 dollar or bigger sizes; About 2 doz pencil eraser sized chips or smaller.
It shows slight rust around windshield and on trim and the vent between glass and hood. Some rust damage to bottom of passenger front fender under paint all of which developed in storage.
Next to the fenders, short cracks on each side of hood on the foldover sheet metal which shows on top edge on hood on each side across from hood ornament. The word "Special" on the passenger side is two pieces and paint scrape with surface rust there.
Interior: Interior solid black fabric well stitched with repainted dash and posts. Headliner may be original shows wear and a 6 in. tear. The driver's vent window is cracked in two directions. Radio does not work. The trunk is spotless in a brown material that looks like the factory style fabric in my 1992. Floors with gray carpet and seats in black look almost new since I have not driven beyond my 1994 test drive it since it was reupholstered.
Extras: A separate four barrel carb, header and four brake pads included with a couple of small odds and ends replacement parts.
Available for pick up in Pittsburgh off I 70 as you are traveling to and from the Hershey Pa Antique Automobile Club of America event in early October. Seller assumes no transport charges on pickup from backyard.

GM is quietly slashing prices on base models
Fri, Jan 30 2015While General Motors' fourth quarter financial figures haven't yet been released, the automaker seems to be weathering a potentially rocky time well, even beating third-quarter projections last year. To keep the climb going, the company is launching new base trims for several popular models that make them cheaper than ever but with tight dealer margins. The new entry-level trims are the Chevrolet Cruze L, Equinox L, GMC Terrain SL and Buick LaCrosse 1SV. Buyers lose some content by picking them, but the prices are slashed. According to Cars Direct, the biggest savings are on the LaCrosse, where customers pay $31,065, plus $925 destination, $2,570 less than the previous base 1SB trim but must accept things like 17-inch wheels and no cargo net in the back. If you're wondering how Buick can remove only a little equipment but cut the price so much, it's because the company also slashed dealer margins. According to Cars Direct, the difference between the invoice and MSRP for the LaCrosse 1SV is only around $150, compared to around $1,350 before. The disparity is even greater for the Cruze with an $81 difference in the prices, compared to about $600 for the LS version. Showrooms are expected to keep very low stocks of these trims, though. "Dealers use such vehicles to get people in the door, but they do not generally want to do high volumes of these strippers. The margins are next to nothing; they don't make much money off these cars," said Ed Kim, Vice President of Industry Analysis for AutoPacific to Autoblog. Dealers are also expected to advertise that these new base trims undercut major competitors. For example, the Cruze L rings up for about $2,320 less than a Honda Civic LX, according to Cars Direct. One potential drawback for buyers is that these models might not be eligible for incentives. While the attractive prices might get customers into dealers, folks may not actually end up driving home with these entry-level models. Kim indicated base trims also make up a small portion of the sales mix. "Consumers aren't asking for stripped out vehicles, even at the low end of the marketplace," he said. Mysterious white powder discovered at GM Orion Assembly
Fri, Sep 2 2016Workers at General Motors Orion Assembly Plant in Orion Township, MI uncovered a mysterious white powder in two different parts of the factory earlier this week, raising concerns about worker safety. "We can confirm that an unknown substance (white powder) was found on the floor outside of Gate 6 at Orion Assembly on Monday, August 29. On Tuesday, August 30, we had a second report of a bottle containing a similar substance found inside the plant," GM spokesperson Dayna Hart told The Oakland Press via email. GM stressed that incident didn't disrupt operations at the plant, and that the company was taking steps to ensure the safety of the sprawling factory's workers. That did include, an anonymous worker told The Oakland Press, closing off parts of the factory for two full days, as drug-sniffing dogs and crews in haz-mat suits descended on the area. "A sample of the substance has been sent to a laboratory for identification and results are expected later this week," Hart said. "All findings and actions have been shared with our employees." Orion Assembly currently builds the Chevrolet Sonic and Buick Verano, and will eventually be responsible for production of the new, all-electric Chevy Bolt early next year. Related Video:
Jay Leno finds no detail neglected on Icon's Derelict 1948 Buick Super
Wed, Apr 1 2015Jonathan Ward seems to have one of the greatest jobs in the world. As the CEO at Icon, he's in charge of not only the company's fantastic trucks but its Derelict series of semi-restored classics, as well. Ward's vehicles are no strangers to Jay Leno's Garage, but the latest guest on the show might be one of Icon's coolest yet. What looks like a 1948 Buick Super Convertible on the outside hides the supercharged heart of a Corvette ZR1 underneath. Like the rest of the Derelict series, this old Buick's toasted paint and pitted chrome are all part of the charm of the car, and it's really a case of beauty being more than skin deep. The Super rides on a custom chassis and suspension to make the convertible a far better driver than even a pristine original example. Plus, Ward hides all sorts of modern upgrades inside that are practically invisible until he points them out. Leno absolutely falls in love with driving the Derelict Buick. If his enthusiasm grabs you, the video below from Ward goes much deeper into the build process of this awesome project.
