1959 Buick LeSabre

61,100 original miles

Excellent body

No Reserve Auction

Up for bids is this 1959 LeSabre in well preserved condition.  This car was bought new at Fulton-Lahtinen Buick in Pasco Washington and stayed local to that area for the next 54 years.  That part of Washington is known as high-desert country and this Buick is about as dry and rust-free as you'll find, just a terrific survivor car.  The car has just over 61K original miles and runs and drives like a peach.  The proverbial 'honest car' is getting harder and harder to find with each passing year - this is one of them.

Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available to view at the bottom of the page.

Repainted in its original color of Wedgewood Blue, the car has a lot of eye appeal.  The paint quality is just fair, it looks pretty good from 20 feet but is far from show quality.  There are some minor areas of paint flaking around the trim, as well as some areas on the roof and trunk lid where the paint is thin.  It doesn't seem to keep people from ooh-ing and ah-ing over the car though, when I was taking the pictures at least 10 different folks stopped along the way to take a closer look, no joke.  GM products from this year have a certain cachet and this car is no exception.

The body on this LeSabre is very straight, panel alignment is good, you can tell it's never been hit or bumped.  All doors close with a perfect click.  The car's strongest point is the fidelity of its sheet metal.  You'll find no rust issues - no bubbling, no blistering, no problems.  I've included some photos of the undercarriage further down the page, it's equally impressive.

Tires are Remington bias-plys, they're old but still have good tread.  All 4 hubcaps are original and in great shape.

The complex front grill is in excellent condition.  The front bumper is very straight and the original chrome still looks pretty nice after 55 years.

The back bumper has a small dent and quite a bit of hazing.  All lights and lenses on the car are in nice condition.

All of the LOF E-Z-Eye glass is original, including the windshield.  It has one small chip on the passenger side, visible in the 2nd photo below.  There is none of the hard-water spotting that you sometimes see on cars of this age, you can tell that this car has always been garaged.

59's had a lot of trim, most of it here is still in good shape, a few areas show some scuffs and scrapes.

The trunk lining and cardboard panels are original and hanging in there after 5 decades.  The underside of the trunk lid (and door jambs) have original paint, they're an exact match to the repainted color.

The car has a huge assortment of registration slips starting from 1959.  Also included is the original owner's manual, warranty booklet, dealer paperwork, assorted service receipts and some interesting ephemera from when the car was new.

The interior is pretty much a time warp back to 1959.

The unique ribbon speedometer on the 59's were prone to failure, this one works perfectly.

All of the gauges work correctly, the ventilation sliders move freely, even the original radio works.  Not really any glitches to track down; the lights, signals, fan, wipers and horn all work correctly.

Good original door panels and hardware.  Windows all wind smoothly, all locks work.

Clean backseat, parcel shelf, and headliner.

The 364 Nailhead runs great with no smoke, it provides a good amount of power and has a nice balanced idle.  The Dynaflow transmission has recently been serviced and operates with the smoothness that it's known for.

The motor stamp at the front of the block matches the VIN in the door jamb.

Very solid undercarriage, still showing traces of the factory red oxide primer.  No signs of accident history or previous repair.  The steel used in the perimeter frame alone could create a Hyundai or two.

Cars from the Pacific Northwest have a reputation for being long-lasting.  Here in Portland it's not unusual to see elderly folks still driving the cars that they bought new during the Eisenhower administration.  This old Buick is one of those cars; still on the road and going great in 2014.

Opel to electrify all model lines by 2024, speeding PSA transition

Thu, Nov 9 2017

What do you see in the Opel logo? That's right, a lightning bolt. As the German automaker dramatically restructures its future plans, electric cars are in the core of Opel's survival. With attempts to stop leaking money, Opel is speeding up its secession from GM technology, launching nine new models by 2020 with the aim to complete transition to PSA hardware by 2024, leaving only two Opel platforms. This is all part of Opel's freshly announced PACE turnaround plan, which is crucial for the company's survival, according to CEO Michael Lohscheller. "PACE will unleash our full potential. This plan is paramount for the company, to protect our employees against headwinds and turn Opel/Vauxhall into a sustainable, profitable, electrified, and global company," says Lohscheller. Competitiveness will be improved by reducing per-car costs by 700 euros, and by cutting marketing costs by 10 percent. Regarding Vauxhall's future, the statement still includes the British brand. When the Opel sale agreement was reached between PSA and GM in March, the plan was to start implementing PSA technology in 2019, completing the transition in eight years, as Automotive News says. The new business plan is noticeably faster. By 2020, with full access to PSA's electric tech, Opel would have a fully electric next-generation Corsa hatchback and a PHEV version of the Grandland X SUV, which is already based on Peugeot's 3008 model. Currently, there are nine Opel platforms and 10 engine families. By 2024 there should be two platforms and four powertrains; the number of diesel engines in use remains to be seen, and all product lines would include an electrified model. There would be an SUV and a midsize vehicle based on PSA's EMP2 architecture, with the former built in Eisenach — formerly known as the town that built East German Wartburg cars before its Opel era — and the latter built in Russelsheim, where Opel HQ is located. The Russelsheim hub will become PSA's global "competence center," where all Opel/Vauxhall vehicles would be engineered — not Paris. Plans include avoiding any factory closures or personnel layoffs. The PACE statement also mentions Opel's entrance to all of 20 new export markets, with a specific mention of China and Brazil, countries which have traditionally seen Opels sold as Chevrolets. Will the United States be included in that export plan?

GM is quietly slashing prices on base models

Fri, Jan 30 2015

While General Motors' fourth quarter financial figures haven't yet been released, the automaker seems to be weathering a potentially rocky time well, even beating third-quarter projections last year. To keep the climb going, the company is launching new base trims for several popular models that make them cheaper than ever but with tight dealer margins. The new entry-level trims are the Chevrolet Cruze L, Equinox L, GMC Terrain SL and Buick LaCrosse 1SV. Buyers lose some content by picking them, but the prices are slashed. According to Cars Direct, the biggest savings are on the LaCrosse, where customers pay $31,065, plus $925 destination, $2,570 less than the previous base 1SB trim but must accept things like 17-inch wheels and no cargo net in the back. If you're wondering how Buick can remove only a little equipment but cut the price so much, it's because the company also slashed dealer margins. According to Cars Direct, the difference between the invoice and MSRP for the LaCrosse 1SV is only around $150, compared to around $1,350 before. The disparity is even greater for the Cruze with an $81 difference in the prices, compared to about $600 for the LS version. Showrooms are expected to keep very low stocks of these trims, though. "Dealers use such vehicles to get people in the door, but they do not generally want to do high volumes of these strippers. The margins are next to nothing; they don't make much money off these cars," said Ed Kim, Vice President of Industry Analysis for AutoPacific to Autoblog. Dealers are also expected to advertise that these new base trims undercut major competitors. For example, the Cruze L rings up for about $2,320 less than a Honda Civic LX, according to Cars Direct. One potential drawback for buyers is that these models might not be eligible for incentives. While the attractive prices might get customers into dealers, folks may not actually end up driving home with these entry-level models. Kim indicated base trims also make up a small portion of the sales mix. "Consumers aren't asking for stripped out vehicles, even at the low end of the marketplace," he said. Consumer Reports no longer recommends Honda Civic

Mon, Oct 24 2016

Consumer Reports annual Car Reliability Survey is out, and yes, there are some big surprises. First and foremost? The venerable publication no longer recommends the Honda Civic. In fact, aside from the walking-dead CR-Z and limited-release Clarity fuel-cell car, the Civic is the only Honda to miss out on CR's prestigious nod. At the opposite end there's a surprise as well – Toyota and Lexus remain the most reliable brands on the market, but Buick cracked the top three. That's up from seventh last year, and the first time for an American brand to stand on the Consumer Reports podium. Mazda's entire lineup earned Recommended checks as well. Consumer Reports dinged the Civic for its "infuriating" touch-screen radio, lack of driver lumbar adjustability, the limited selection of cars on dealer lots fitted with Honda's popular Sensing system, and the company's decision to offer LaneWatch instead of a full-tilt blind-spot monitoring system. Its score? A lowly 58. The Civic isn't the only surprise drop from CR's Recommended ranks. The Audi A3, Ford F-150, Subaru WRX/STI, and Volkswagen Jetta, GTI, and Passat all lost the Consumer Reports' checkmark. On the flipside, a number of popular vehicles graduated to the Recommended ranks, including the BMW X5, Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette, and Cruze, Hyundai Santa Fe, Porsche Macan, and Tesla Model S. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the hilariously recall-prone Ford Escape getting a Recommended check – considering the popularity of Ford's small crossover, this is likely a coup for the brand, as it puts the Escape on a level playing field with the Recommended Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Nissan Rogue. While Ford is probably happy to see CR promote the Escape, the list wasn't as kind for every brand. For example, of the entire Fiat Chrysler Automobiles catalog, the ancient Chrysler 300 was the only car to score a check – there wasn't a single Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Maserati, or Ram on the list. That hurts. FCA isn't alone at the low end, either. GMC, Jaguar Land Rover, Mini, and Mitsubishi don't have a vehicle on CR's list between them, while brands like Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Nissan, Lincoln, Infiniti, and Cadillac only have a few models each. You can check out Consumer Reports entire reliability roundup, even without a subscription, here.
